Many of you have said interesting things about us being a joining of (mammalian) body, soul with its many faculties, and spirit. Things that join have weak points where they will fall apart if the whole is not in optimum state.
I found the following ideas in a booklet published by the ESBVM, “Mary in the Catholic-Assyrian Dialogue” based on a paper given in 1998 by Mar Bawai Soro. (My summary of the section that refers.)
In the East, Mary’s not having sinned was not a matter of an Immaculate Conception as such. All men have a tendency to sin because of insecurity over their mortality and limitations not because of it being passed down in the genetic code (I think this is a matter of not over-egging the pudding, i.e limitations are passed down and genetic damage has probably gradually increased, but it is the insecurity that is the crucial fact, i.e man was OK with his limitations and his relationship with God at one time). Mary remained sinless throughout her life (including when in the womb, John the Baptist being thought a similar case), by God’s assistance. Hence sin is seated in the will rather than in “nature”.
Another example of psychology being contagious from that day to this.
