Did Your Parish Celebrate Respect Life Sunday?

I’m a rosary leader and before the 8:30 mass we dedicated the entire rosary to the end of the scourge of abortion.I then invited all present to the life chain event in Niagara Falls, which my son and I attended.Several motorists cursed at us and gave us the finger-more waved, beeped and smiled but most were sublimely indifferent.🤷

We had a no-nonsense homily from our priest. Not only did he speak out against abortion, but of other moral issues in our country which he correlated as part of the problem with such a lack of respect for life - domestic violence, premarital sex, pornography, homosexual practice and gay unions (not homosexuality itself - he made that clear as there are homosexuals who are not practicing, but are celibate), euthanasia, broken families, etc.

Then he focused on how we as Catholic Christians are too afraid about being politically correct in the real world - that in order to make change in the attitudes of respecting life, we have to be more brave about speaking out against moral evils.

We also had a second collection for respect life.

I voted all of the above:

-Our priest gave a good homily on respect for life from conception to natural death.
-It was mentioned prominently in the bulletin.
-Our prayers of the faithful specifically requested prayers for those at ALL stages of life, and a greater respect for life.
-A group of parishoners met at the church and carpooled out to the local Life Chain, which was mentioned in the post-Communion announcements.

Our parish is also praying five decades of the Rosary before every Mass during October (weekend and weekday) for the protection of life.

I didn’t attend Mass in my own parish. My eldest daughter and I went to Mass at our Archdiocese Cathedral. The Mass was celebrated by Cardinal Rigali (our Archbishop) who is the Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee for Pro-Life Activities, so I guess it goes without saying that Respect Life Sunday was a big deal.
My parish had collections for our Respect Life Club before and after Mass, and the priest at the Mass the rest of my family went to discussed Respect Life Sunday in the homily and in the petitions.

By the way, God Bless Bishop Martino. We Philadelphians will forever claim him as one of our own, and while we would love to have him back, we are just so proud of the work he is doing in Scranton!

I have no idea how global Respect Life Sunday is but there was no mention of it here.

I missed my commitment to join the Life Chain at a neighboring parish because the baby shower our parish was holding after Mass for an unwed teen mom who is due “any day now” ran late. BTW, our parish regularly participates in the prayers in front of the local abortuary and our pastor always prays "for the victims of abortion and for an end to abortion: every Sunday.

Thanks for sharing Bishop Martino with us! He’s had a rough time here (he has had to make some long-overdue difficult decisions regarding school closings and parish consolidations), but I know he is a man of prayer who is doing the best he can. I’m glad to have him as our shepherd.

That is so true. I know the people in the parish that I’ve attended on vacation are really ticked at him as it has broken up their church community and other rural church communities. At the same time, being friends with priests and speaking with them, I also know that many of these things had to be done in order to survive. I’ve heard things on both sides, but I’m basically staying neutral since it’s not my diocese. He used to be at my childhood parish when I was a kid and he seemed nice then.

Our parish priest admonished everyone from the pulpit about voting pro-life and not supporting abortion in any way. Our parish invites all the christian churches in the area to join our life chain. Last year one church brought more people to participate than the number of Catholics who participated. With father shaking his finger from the pulpit:D , more Catholics “got off their duffs” and participated. There was a great turn out by people of all religions and the passersby honked and gave us a:thumbsup: I took my disabled son this year, and he did great.:dancing:

My Parish in San Antonio didn’t mention anything, but my pastor is on vacation and ALL the Deacons were on retreat. The fill-in priest celebrating Mass has only been ordained for 3 months (also his 30th birthday).

However, while travelling west of San Antonio, TX Sunday PM, I saw relatively large groups standing by US Highway 90 holding “Pro Life” signs in both Castroville and Hondo. 🙂

We had a presentation about the Assisted Suicide bill that is up for a vote in the State of Washington in November. It’s a very scary bill, which our neighbors to the south (Oregon) already have on their books. Basically, insurance companies can deny medication and recommend suicide for thier elderly or sick clients. In Holland, where it has been legal for years, many old people are afraid to go to the doctor, for fear they will be talked into suicide. If your state ever tries to pass this kind of bill, stand up and be Catholic!!

We had a great homily. Our priest told us about a man he knew whose young mother was kicked out of her “Catholic” home for refusing to abort him. (Having him would “ruin her life.”) He’s now a CEO of a major local company, and she’s in the state legislature!

This was the Mass for the college students, and he went on to talk about how some girls in college get into the party crowd, and develop impure habits, and how some boys take advantage of those girls. He ended by saying, “If you’re one of those girls, STOP! If you’re one of those boys, DON’T DO IT!” I wish I could reproduce his tone. It both deplored the sin and expressed deep love.

We’re blessed in him!

Pray for vocations, in Scranton and in all the world!

We had a brand new priest who comes from a family of priests & deacons & a bishop. He teaches theology. He told us about himself & his family. He was funny & personal & a nice guy. He talked a little about angel theology and suggested that we go home and name our own personal guardian angel.

😦 He never mentioned Respect Life. Our parish for the past two months has started Sunday Mass with the announcement: ‘Welcome to Saint xxxx, a Pro-Life parish’, but it was noticeably missing at the Mass I attended. There were two good pointed prayer petitions though.
