“You are not being clear as to what your intentions are.”

My intention (from the very beginning) was to comment on ‘nothing’. However, the topic is to discuss the difference between ‘nothing’ and a ‘vacuum’. I think I am not in the same “ballpark”.

Sincerely,
JV

The comment, at the very beginning, was:

Someone had said “according to my reasoning God came from nothing (too)”

I jumped in with the statement, Right! but by His infinite power (power from within Himself), He is able to bring Himself into existence! Whereas ALL other existences require power to exist from outside of themselves!

Hopefully, I am “riddle” free. lol!

Sincerely,
JV

Concerning the “someone” mentioned in my immediate former reply:

I don’t think I even read his/her reasoning…I just seen his last statement (God came from nothing) and assumed he was honest with himself…and the Topic had “nothing” in the title…AND I was convinced of “uncaused cause”…so I said what I said!

Sincerely,
JV

Nothing is not an ontological reality. Its merely a word that we use to describe the ontological difference between to comparative situations. For example, there is no bike in this room in comparison to a room that has i bike in it. There is nothing in this room in comparison to other rooms which have things in them. To say there is nothing in a room is not to say that nothing is metaphysically present in this room. It is merely to say that according to my expectations of seeing a bike in that room, i have instead found an empty room; which is only empty in reference to what i subjectively expected to be in that room. In reality, the room is just a room; there is neither nothing or emptiness in it. It is a limited space, and by that fact there is no necessary reason why there should be a bike in that space. Thus when we speak of nothing we are not saying that nothing is real, but rather we are saying merely that this room is different to my expectations. Or is different according to other rooms which do have bikes in them. Thus we are never talking about the absence of a necessary reality, but rather we are speaking about the absence of some possible reality which does not have to exist.

An entity only has meaning in relationship to another entity. For example, Evil only has meaning in relationship to Good. Evil is the deprivation of Good. By itself, Evil has no meaning. It is void of meaning. It only has meaning in relationship to the existence and reality of Absolute Good (God). Therefore, absolute nothingness has no meaning other than in relationship to Absolute Being (Actus Purus). When St. John tells us God is Love, in itself it has no meaning as a singularity - it only has meaning in regard to relationships of Persons in the Trinity. Once I heard the following saying at Catholic University talk - “a Person is a Person only in relationship to another Person.”

Absolute nothingness means nothing in itself other than from the understanding of Absolute Perfection of Being. One is the complete presence of reality and the other of its complete absense. Absolute nothingness in my mind does not exist, but only in relationship to the reality to which it points to ----> “I AM WHO AM”. The word “I” represents singularity. The word “WHO” seems to me to represent relationship. Relationship is that which exists between 2 or more realities. If God were a singularity, He would have said “Let ME make man in MY image.” Rather scripture tells us God said “Let US make man in OUR image.” Sorry if I am rambling …

Please read the following very carefully (all the way throughh) before jumping to conclusions. The following, right appear to be erroneous, but only if you don’t read it carefully.🙂

I am not sure whether you are disagreeing with what I said or just adding to what I said. I think that I disagree with you in the way that you attribute the word love to God. You are (perhaps unintentionally), treating it as something that is potentially true of God, as if God could have chosen otherwise. It is certainly Gods “act”. But it is a principle act of Gods nature to love. Its a mistake to think of Gods freedom in the same sense of human freewill, although it is perhaps, allegorically speaking, a close approximation to Gods freedom. Human freewill is not a perfection by itself, but rather it is good only in relation to its end which is the goodness of God.

We do not have true freedom in the same sense of God, but rather, by having human freewill, we have the means by which we can choose Freedom as opposed to the slavery of sin. Sin by definition is at war with the perfection of being. Freedom from sin is the perfection of Gods being, freedom is the being of God. Once we go to heaven it will be impossible to sin just as it is impossible for God to sin; because the possibility of sin by definition lies in opposition to Gods nature; it is at war with the act of perfectly being, which God is. Gods freedom is expressed by necessary the fact of Gods attributes. To experience God as God truly is in heaven, is to be in perfect conformity with the unified act of Esse. This is what it means for ones existence to be absolutely fulfilled. Gods being is perfect reality absolutely unified and simple. The freedom of God is the fulfilment of being, and to fulfil being is to love perfectly without the possibility of failing to love. God is absolute freedom from the possibility of sin; and while this may appear to be determinism (restricting Gods freedom to choose between good and evil), you will find, with careful thinking, that it is not once we understand what the word freedom truly means in respect of sin and salvation in relation to Gods attributes. My understanding of Gods nature is that God is identical with love. Its not simply something that God does; it is also what God fundamentally is. The act of Gods reality is Love. Love is identical with the necessary act of subsistent being (God).

But I most certainly agree with you insofar as you say that Gods Love as a nature is necessarily a communion of persons; which proves my point since to be God is to be a communion of persons and thus God is necessarily love by nature of being. Gods will to love is not a choice from some kind of neutral stand point in eternity. To imply that God has human freewill would be to attribute to God a human imperfection.

Therefore love is Esse/Subsistent being. Thus love is therefore ontologically real. But the word “nothing”, merely designates the absence of a contingent reality, and is therefore not ontologically real.

Love has to be a real objective nature which binds and unifies. Otherwise love is just a subjective notion which has no real objective application to God.

Adding clarification to the meaning of absolute nothingness.
With regards to love, I was also trying to say that God is not a singularity, but a plurality of Persons in relationship to one another. God the Father has no meaning or definition except that He Begets a Son. God the Son has no meaning or definition except that He is Begotten by the Father. The Holy Spirit has no meaning except that He Proceeds from that relationship between the Father and Son. Love has no meaning except in a relationship of Persons. God is Love has no meaning other than in God there is and are relationships. In God, there is no potentiality of Love. God is Love, has always been and will always be. Creation, Redemption, Santification flow from this reality - the reality of God’s inner life of relationship and love - something that exists even if creation never happened. Love is NOT a principle - but an ACTUAL reality in God’s inner life between the Divine Persons. Love has no meaning other than in relationship.

And getting back to the central point I was trying to make - Absolute nothingness has no meaning or defiinition other than in relationship to Absolute Perfection of Being. The reality of Absolute Perfection of Being exists as an Actuality and therefore we have a reference point to speak of Absolute Nothingness.

Love is NOT a principle - but an ACTUAL reality in God’s inner life between the Divine Persons. Love has no meaning other than in relationship.
Thus love is a principle of Gods actual reality

Thus love is a principle of Gods actual reality
Whether love is a principle or not is insignificant to me. The very meaning of love points to relationship(s) in the inner life of God. God and Love is not a singularity. The very meaning of love also requires relationship and reference of one entity to another - the Father to the Son and the Son to the Father. Absolute nothingness has no meaning but in reference to what it points to. Whether love is a principle is irrelevant to the point I was trying to make.

I agree. The fact that God is a communion of persons, follows necessarily from fact that God is love.
God and Love is not a singularity. The very meaning of love also requires relationship and reference of one entity to another - the Father to the Son and the Son to the Father.
I agree. Love can only exist as a communion. This is why human beings feel more fulfilled in friendships and relationships; because subsistent existence itself is a relationship. This is one of the main reasons why mass is so important and central to a truly Christian faith.
Absolute nothingness has no meaning but in reference to what it points to. Whether love is a principle is irrelevant to the point I was trying to make.
I agree. But unlike the nature of love (I think this is important to add), nothingness has no “ontology”. Absolute Nothingness is not a possibility in so far as it is not a reality or a nature; and this is really the most important thing to recognise. Possibility can only be an expression of being.

a few definitions:

Intellect = to know.

will = to decide.

Human soul = powers of intellect and will. (emphasis on two not one.)

Charity = supernatural love.

Love = deep appreciation. (act of will but must be somehow affected by intellect)

However since all of above seems to be OFF TOPIC! (but, nevertheless, I am very grateful for the insight I’ve received,

re: “nothing” without existence of material being is meaningless (with material being, concept of “nothing” is possible and meaningful!

On the onthological order (immaterial being) the subject has gotten “side tracked” by other issues (such as above)…Thus I said I’m in the wrong ball park (lol!).

Good day to all! (bye, bye)

Sincerely,
JV

oops!..clarification of above (tnks to St. T.A.):

Charity = supernatural love (God’s friendship).

again…good day to all (I’m history!)

You guys have made a number of excellent points about what is nothingness. Let’s see. From a human standpoint, nothingness is a place where there exists a complete absence of being. But, what is a place? Place, defined by Aristotle, and clarified by Aquinas, is defined as an innermost immobile surface of a surrounding body. Thus, an absence-of-being would be surrounded by some sort of (contiguous) being. And, perhaps this is the only way limited beings can render it in our intellects. But, true nothingness does not exist. Not even in a surrounding body.

We humans have always had a predilection for relating nothingness with a vacuum. But, as you guys have amply pointed out, the two are not ontologically related at all. Their only relation is as a comparison, as metaphors. Very good.

God bless,
jd

Greylorn, do you think you can improve a CIRCLE? Or do you think there is a better definition of a circle just around the corner? Sometimes a DOCTRINE cannot be improved either - because it too expresses THAT WHICH IS and CAN NEVER CHANGE. Don’t be afraid of DOCTRINE Greylorn as if you are assassinating your own mind. But rather … EMBRACE … lol
Neither I, nor God, can redefine the concept of “circle,” much less improve upon it.

But there is a difference between geometrical/mathematical concepts and doctrines which transcends anything you seem to understand. I’d like to explain it, but am powerless in the face of such bizarre ignorance as manifested by your comparison.

Doctrines always change. I’ve studied the history of the Catholic Church, and of Buddhism, etc. You would improve the quality of your own mind by doing the same.

Doctrines, after all, are simply ideas which men invented, then attributed the invention to some higher power. You’ll glean as much insight into the nature and purpose of creation by reading the channeled teachings of “Kryon,” or from Joseph Smith’s translations of the golden tablets of Moron, or from Muhammed’s channeled poetry, as from any other religion.

Unlike the circle, which not even God can invent or de-invent, all doctrines are invented by humans. The successful doctrines are those which garnered enough acceptance to engage the power of agreement, which is essentially the power of the mob to convince.

I’m not afraid of any doctrine, but am genuinely fearful of the nitwits who would inflict theirs upon me, at pain of death.

I once accepted the doctrines in which you believe. Then I learned, not atheistic philosophy, but university level freshman physics, taught by honest professors who never discussed, or implied interest in, a potential relationship between physics and religion.

Within the same set of concepts that allow your car to run, there is a powerful logical contradiction to the core teaching of all western religious beliefs.

Man did not invent this contradiction. I’ve never seen it expressed in any atheistic arguments. Like the circle, it can be discovered but not created.

Trying to inject simple logic and straight-up reality into a mind like yours is certainly a great waste of time. Why do I even bother? It is because someone else with an open, curious mind might also be reading.

Greylorn:

Once again, I am amazed that you get away with what you away with, in these forums. The tone of your entire communication here is condescending and extremely uncharitable. You really have little to offer to these discussions, except, perhaps, to try hard to make decent folks feel bad. Is there nothing that can be done about people like you?

You have, apparently, gotten away with this stuff for so long that you accept it as sort of an entitlement - we get to have a person of your incredible stature and intellectual acumen with us to instruct us. Big deal!

I, for one, will shut you off. And, if I continue to see that you are allowed to continue with your inflammatory rhetoric, you’ll get me to deal with.

Dear Greylorn,

I apologize if you felt any disrespect in my previous posts directed at you which prompted this kind of reply. There are days when I realize I wake up on the wrong side of the bed and look for someone to take it out on. I have decided for now I have to stop watching the news on TV because of how angry I get about the political process in this country, about the corruption of Capitalism that tilts the table towards the few and about the erosion of real Democracy that allows ever person to have a voice. Right now I am reading a book on FDR right and it is truly amazing how true that saying is – “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” What is going on today in this country and the world at large is the same as what was going on in the time when FDR came into office. Back to the point - I really really REALLY don’t want to be disrespectful to you or anyone and hope that I can avoid that kind of rhetoric in the future. If I ever disrespect you, I would be very appreciative that you call me out on it. And so if I got you on one of those bad days about the circle and doctine, I am truly sorry.

If you know anything about spiritual experience and awakening, you would realize everything I share with you is not so much from my head as it is my heart. I have had many powerful spiritual experiences of God’s love in my life (called Locutions) and they are slowly transforming my life. I still have a long, long, LONG way to go to allow real LOVE to be at the center of my life – but at the same time I can tell you I have come a long, LONG way from where I used to be. I am not what I should be or want to be - but at the same time I am certainly not what I used to be. I have shared a little bit with you in other threads about this transformation going on inside of me. Forgive me if it sounds like I think I have it all figured out and come across to you as a know it all and not interested in what you share in this Forum. I only know that there was once a time in my life that I used to wish I had never been born and hated myself like you wouldn’t believe, but because of experiences of God’s love my struggle is now a different kind of struggle – a struggle to let God and others love me and to genuinely love myself. You have to realize that I am under no illusion about how I love (or rather don’t love) myself and others. How I treat others is how I love myself. Christ’s command to “love your neighbor as yourself” is no pie in the sky. I am painfully aware of how much I fall short, and you can bet that I am hardest on myself. I am learning to treat myself a little more kindly in the way I know I need to be treating others. (To be continued …) …

I realize you think that doctrine in man made. I really do think highly of the power of reason and logic and you do exhibit a strong intellect. The Catholic Church pays tribute to humankind’s ability through the gift of reason to know with certainty that God does exist and WHAT God is. You are right that history shows how the Catholic Church has not exhibited what it believes and has been hypocritical and contradictory to its own teaching. You are right to be “genuinely fearful of the nitwits who would inflict theirs upon me, at pain of death.” But without asking you to agree, you have to at least understand or acknowledge that what the Catholic Church teaches about itself is that it is RELIGION OF REVELATION. The central doctrine of Christianity is the Holy Trinity and the Church clearly teaches that this is NOT a doctrine that humankind could have reasoned and logically figured out. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is God’s revelation to the human race. It is God reaching out to man. All other religions it teaches is humankinds’ attempt to reach out to God. It is the central MYSTERY in the Christian faith. Mystery does not mean that humankind cannot ever understand anything (agnosticism) – but rather that it is a truth that the mind of mankind will never FULLY grasp or understand, but rather can slowly grow in understanding. It is a MYSTERY that will never be exhausted or completely figured out. Have you ever read the story of St. Augustine at the beach trying to contemplate the Trinity? If not, I would recommend at least to be familiar with it. What is finite can never fully contain the infinite. Christians say that there is a HIERARCHY of truths, some of them more important than others - like concentric circles inside each other … some of them nearer to the center than others. But there is only one circle that is in the middle that SUPERCEDES ALL OTHER TRUTHS. That truth is the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity. I know you think it is a just man made truth. But if you take anything from what I am writing, please understand that Christians believe that this TRUTH contains all other TRUTHS and is God’s Revelation to the Human Race. We believe God doesn’t want us just to understand WHAT He is – but most importantly WHO HE IS. God is not an impersonal force but rather a living Spirit who invites us into a relationship of love that will last for the rest of eternity – and in that relationship of love with God – to be able to be at peace with ourselves and being at peace with ourselves to be enabled to be at peace with our neighbor – to sincerely enter into relationships of love with other people as brothers and sisters – and that no man or woman is above another. Each one of us is a diamond from God. I know that history has not shown this, but please also acknowledge that history also shows the GREAT GOOD the Church has done on behalf of others. Take Mother Teresa for one. Now that is a person I highly respect and treasure. Please forgive me if I have dishonored or disrespected you in any way. It is ok to agree to disagree. It is quite another to belittle each other – something I hope to avoid in the future going forward. I sincerely do thank God for you …

JK,
Thank you for your honorable and Christian come back. I did come down on you with unnecessary attitude in my last post, and I apologize. That last paragraph was tacky. You do not deserve insult from me or anyone for your postings here.

You and I may be of similar temperaments. I know how you feel about the news. The part that I find difficult when watching, for example, Glenn Beck, is my realization that the politicians and their cronies he describes, who are doing their best to destroy the core of this nation, especially targeting belief in God, probably believe that they are doing the right thing.

I get upset because they are winning. I believe that they are winning because the God-concept held by most people (like yourself) makes no logical sense. In a world wherein science has become so powerful, an illogical belief system will not thrive.

So, what I do here is attempt to engage a few thoughtful individuals in the idea that we live in a created universe, but that the ancients who invented our ideas about the nature and purpose of its creator may have gotten a few important things wrong.

Obviously, I have adopted a God-concept different from yours. But, I am not your enemy. If I survive long enough, I hope to become atheism’s worst nightmare.

I’m certain that if you wanted to, you could have me banned from this forum. I’ve been close enough already. But before you consider doing that, read all my stuff, and consider the logic of my objections to both formal Christianity and atheism. I’m trying to operate without beliefs, except perhaps trust in the value of logic.

I accept much of what you believe in, such as the idea of a purposeful, created universe. I disagree with the tenets and implications of atheism. I’ve studied science, and find atheism to be unscientific. I think that Darwinism is the dumbest pseudo-scientific explanation ever invented by man, which succeeded only because its competition was six-day creationism. I do not want Christianity to go away. Likewise the other great religions which, at their core, bring out the best in mankind by calling us to a higher place.

I don’t want you to stop being a Catholic. The Church needs guys like you who will stand up and fight. And I don’t mind catching a punch— been there, done that. But also consider the possibility that ideas like mine, ideas developed by people who believe in a Creator but not in the Christian God, are the only bulwarks standing between Christianity and a hellstorm of evil the likes of which this world has so far only tasted.

Much of my reply here is repetitive, but my position, though simple, seems to generate a surprising amount of misunderstanding.

I was once a Catholic, and remained one in the face of outright ridicule from some scientists with whom I worked. Working late one Friday night in a NASA control room, they ordered a pair of sausage pizzas. That was back in '68. I went very hungry. I did not feel like the fool I was until the Pope lifted the ban on Friday meat.

I served mass dutifully for years, arising at 5am and getting myself to church through summer and winter. Even considered being a priest. So I know the power of faith from the inside out. I’d never propose that someone who truly believes in a good religion and is using his belief as a path to self-development ever, ever give up that faith. Not even if they were adopting my ideas instead.

I’m an engineer, too. If it works, Do Not Fix It!

My ideas have only two targets: atheists and agnostics. We could add, perhaps, those believers who are on the verge of becoming atheists.

My core premises are simple, and I believe you realize that they are true.

Yes, Christianity is a Revealed Religion, but not the only one to make this claim. However, these claims rest, in all cases, upon the words of men. Abraham says God spoke to Him. Moses says the same. And Joseph Smith was given golden tablets by an angel of God. These men were able to convince others that their experiences were true. Subsequently, other men accepted the claims of their predecessors as truth.

I’m not claiming that God did not speak directly to Moses. But, even the Bible shows no other witness. I’m claiming that what we actually know is that these revelations came from the mouths and pens of men, and have subsequently been attributed to God. Who did the attribution? More men.

I do not trust men much.

However, my studies of the universe (all coming through the investigations of men) show me that this is necessarily a created universe. The only Bible I trust is the universe itself. Why? It is certain, absolutely certain, to be the direct work of its Creator. As such, I find it a higher authority than any words or beliefs of man.

Admittedly, the universe must be interpreted. Just like the Hebrew and Greek Bibles, when translated into English, Chinese, or whatever. But unlike the languages of man, the universe gets put into one common language, mathematics.

Note that it is the only Bible which, when accepted, is interpreted the same everywhere. Islamic terrorists use the same laws of physics when making bombs that we do. That alone marks physics as a higher level of revelation than any words of man. That is exactly what I would expect of a Bible written with the hand of God— no cross-cultural variation.

IMO the many “revealed” religions are based not upon revelation, but upon agreement. Followers argue so vehemently for their beliefs in order to buttress the only real basis for those beliefs, which is the agreement of other believers. I notice the same characteristic among most atheists posting on CAF— the same tendency to argue vehemently. Few of them actually understand any of the scientific dogma they spout, but are merely speaking from their belief that scientific dogma is somehow better than Christian dogma.

Dogma is dogma. I personally see no need for it.

In my opinion, because religions everywhere have dropped the ball, the physical universe is badly interpreted. Atheistic interpretations do not work well, but thanks to abdications by religions, atheism rules. I’m trying to change that.

And when the idea and arguments I present, using my best knowledge and logic, are beaten down by good Christians on the grounds that they conflict with religious dogmas invented by men, I get frustrated. Of course my ideas conflict with dogma. Dogma is used to bypass logic, whether used by Christians or Darwinists.

We can understand the nature and purpose of the Creator simply by using our best minds and cleanest logic, provided we are willing to always question our hypotheses and test our conclusions. Physics, properly interpreted, explains the properties of God quite effectively, and without conflict with logic or good evidence.

Incidentally, in the process of developing my ideas I came up with a rather elegant version of the Creator as a Trinity which is perfectly logical, but only in the context of “Creators.”

I did not feel like the fool I was until the Pope lifted the ban on Friday meat.
Modern day Catholics are much like Old Testament believers in that they follow the letter of the law, but completely miss the “spirit” of the law. The law on not eating meat on Friday can be just one more obligation the Church required of others – or it can be an opportunity for people to enter into the “spirit” of Lent – to learn a little more about the meaning of sacrifice and temptation, to spend more time in prayer realizing our need for God and that “man does not live on bread alone.”
I’m not claiming that God did not speak directly to Moses. But, even the Bible shows no other witness. I’m claiming that what we actually know is that these revelations came from the mouths and pens of men, and have subsequently been attributed to God. Who did the attribution? More men. I do not trust men much.
I am a lot more like you than you realize. I do not trust people either, especially people in authority. (By the way, I call this type of conversation “dialogue” and not debate – something very precious to me). I do trust Holiness in other people and there are holy people in the world. Holiness is the proof of the pudding. In a nutshell – Holiness is genuine Love - a humble spirit who sincerely loves other people out of love for God simply because of knowing God’s love for them. Mother Teresa is someone I really love and HIGHLY respect. Like the moon reflecting the light of the sun, she was a soul that genuinely reflected the light of God’s love. Those are the kind of people I trust. But even more so, there is one human being I trust (or want to trust) – Jesus. I have had a few locutions involving Jesus that I know are real. My spiritual experience(s) are my guideposts that authenticate what I know is true. All the goodness, tenderness, humility, kindness, gentleness I find in other people like Mother Teresa are only signposts that point me in the right direction – towards Jesus. Yes, I have met Jesus. To me He is not just a historical figure who lived thousands of years ago, but is still alive today. He has been very kind and gentle with me. If it was up to me, I would have pulled the plug on myself a long time ago.

I agree with you that the Universe is a “word” of God – spoken by God that reveals something about God to us. You also are a “word” of God as am I. Everything God has created reveals something about the Creator – just as all Art reveals something about the Artist. But there is one WORD that is above all other “words” - Jesus. He is the “WORD OF GOD” in Person. The Artist has entered His painting and become one of us. If you really want to know who God is and get to know what He is like – get to know Jesus as a Person. Mother Teresa (like the moon) is only a reflection of the sun’s rays. But Jesus really is the SON. All beauty and holiness eminates from Him. I want to trust Him.

You do not deserve insult from me or anyone for your postings here.
I do deserve to be insulted. It helps me to realize how I have not treated other people with respect, and for that I am really sorry. Thank you for helping me to realize my behavior and the tone of my words. Please call me out on it if I ever do again.

Dear Greylorn,

I say this with all respect as your brother and I hate to break the news to you but - God cannot be reduced to a science project. God is always free to do as He pleases.

As beautiful and marvelous is creation (and I don’t say that lightly) … the Artist is even more beautiful than His art - although I think you clearly know that art always reveals something about the Artist. The Painting is not the Painter. The Music is not the Musician. What is beautiful is not Beauty itself. What is lovely is not Love itself. You are so right to try to learn about God through His creation. And in all humility, I can with all my heart say that you would do BEST to study a Person and get to know Him. (I am not talking about the Catholic Church). I am talking about a human being who lived thousands of years ago and some say they know He is alive. He is the WORD that contains all other “words”. He is Love and Beauty incarnate. Once you have understood the source of Light, then you will be able to see where all other beauty and holiness come from - just as the moon has no light of its own but only reflects the light of the sun. You would do very well to study the lives of the Saints and not focus on any doctrine. The proof really is in the pudding in the lives of the Saints. The Church is in the condition it is in because it has people like me in it. Someday I hope there will be a sign in every Catholic Church - in BIG LETTERS that say “SINNERS STILL WELCOME”. The Church is full of sinners and some know it more than others. I would also like to see the saying “If you are looking for a Perfect Church - Go Home” !!!
