And given that most Jews are pretty much white, I fail to see why a “European”-looking Jesus would even be an issue. He could have looked a lot like Adam Sandler or Benjamin Netanyahu, who are, well, white. Jews are Semites, who come in all sorts of shades, just like Arabs. There are white Arabs and there are dark Arabs. There are white Jews, and there are dark Jews.
You are forgetting one factor in your thinking - the Diaspora. Before it happened, Jews were from that region almost exclusively. No intermarrying and certainly not with Europeans. So think of Yasser Arafat rather than Bebe Netanyahu, or Anwar Sadat rather than Adam Sandler.

I’m somewhat partial to this particular image of Jesus.–Not European by a long shot.

Ummm. The image is quite European. Compare to Colin Farrell.

Ok, I give up. I can’t get the image to post. Go to Wiki and look at his pic there. The two could be brothers.

The shroud has long hair, but their version has short hair.

I think it’s more because the image comes from the Uncanny Valley and has an off-putting look. If Christ looked like a human version of this without the dead eyes, like a dolls eyes, it’d be fine.

Cleary they don’t consider the shroud to be their only source.
No, and why would they?
I didn’t say they should. I just answered his post.

What is concealed by the gray blocking in the upper left side, next to the cross?

Nothing. There are a bunch of different photos of this art work online and as some of them clearly show, there is a hole in the plaque where the blocking is. Looks like a piece chipped off. This image was probably put through a filter that made the hole a gray blocking.

At your particular judgement, are you going to call Jesus hideous if this is what He actually looks like?
Oh for Pete’s sake, it’s nothing more than a computer generated image, which I happen to think is ugly. I am entitled to my own opinion here…right? I stand by my original post.

I always thought that image was inaccurate because it assumed every jew from that time had the same face.

I have no idea why we continuously bicker over that BBC Jesus picture. There are dozens of “European Jesus” pictures I don’t like because I just think they look silly, insipid, or not like my own mental concept of Jesus. Likewise, I don’t have to accept a scientist or media outlet’s conception of Jesus either.

When and if we see Jesus, he will be so transfigured with heavenly glory that he will be beautiful regardless of his features. I also strongly suspect that he will appear to each of us in a way that is beautiful and appealing to us, probably he will look like our own brother of our own race. God is not limited to one particular set of features.

Many women who saw visions of Jesus have spoken of him in very romantic and loving terms and said he was very handsome. He apparently inspires such feelings when he shows up. I don’t think it’s sexual.
