Summer, if you believe this is their reality, then you need to have a sit down with your folks and ask them why their behavior is making you and your family miserable to the point that you guys are desperate to be out of there. Site specific instances/examples, and try to remain as emotionally neutral as you can.

Sometimes people really are that clueless. It might be the wake up call they need.

Ah, that dreaded conversation… honestly, I think that’s one conversation that’s probably best saved for after we’re moved out. Every time we’ve tried to have this conversation before, it always morphs into how DH and I don’t value family enough; how kids should be seeing the grandparents daily, how it’s so unnatural that our society sees married kids as separate family units from the grandparents, etc. We’re just falling subject to society’s shortfalls and won’t listen to reason; and they have a right to defend themselves against it. It’s a huge guilt trip. And then they pile on all the rest of the places where we might fall short: the dishes aren’t done “on time,” the family room is a mess of toys, we forgot to put the settings on the washing machine back to the ones my mom likes so when she ran the last load it still had an extra rinse on, etc. I really don’t want to deal with it and not have somewhere of our own to go to while my parents pout.

I know that they love us and that they just want to be included in our lives. But they honestly don’t see anything wrong with what they’re doing, and they feel that their way is the one right way. They honestly can’t fathom why anyone else would *want *to do things differently, because their way worked so well. And if their way worked so well for them, it must be the best way for every other family to be. If only they could make the rest of the world realize it!
