This ran as the headline to the Apr. 2 2009 headline for the Wichita Eagle:

“Participate in Palm Sunday, Holy Week services: let the Eucharist have its full effect, changing us into Jesus, filling us with the Spirit of Christ”

The sub-headline was taken from the text of Bishop Jackel’s article about Holy Week, and I’m afraid I don’t understand his phrase “changing us into Jesus”—what on earth does this mean? Is he suggesting that Holy Communion transforms those who receive it into an image of Christ? Or is he suggesting that we mortals can attain immortality through Holy Communion? Or what? Surely he doesn’t intend heresy, right in the headline of his own newspaper. Does anyone else have another view? Please, read the article and let me know what you think.**

No, I think the headline means that frequent reception of the eucharist turns us toward Jesus and gives us the grace and desire to follow and imitate him.

I think he means that we are the body of Christ, and the eucharist helps us to become more and more united with Christ.

It’s unusual to say we “become Jesus” but if we’re the body of Christ, then as a group we are supposed to be Jesus here on earth.

This is religious metaphor. It’s very ancient in Church language. You find it in the writings of the mystics such as Paul, Kempis, Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila and Vincent de Paul.

Fraternally,

JR 🙂
