Bishop Carlson celebrated Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Saginaw, MI today to commerate the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Saginaw.

During his (very good) homily, he said he was a walking history exhibit-he used Bishop Murphy’s Shephard’s Crook, Bishop Woznicki’s chalice, Bishop Reh’s Episcopal ring, and Bishop Ken’s cross.

The Diocese of Saginaw was created out of the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Diocese of Grand Rapids in 1938 (and later shrunk when the Diocese of Gaylord was formed in 1971). Read the whole story here: saginaw.org/blog/post/68

The pictures are from the Anniversary Mass. The one picture is the Bishop during Mass with Deacon Roger. The other picture with Deacon Roger (holding the book) and Cathedral Rector, Fr. Bessert, blessing the new Cathedral offices and community center.

Was the left photo shot in the cathedral? I couldn’t help but notice members of the laity either sitting or standing instead of kneeling at the elevation. I thought kneeling was now compulsory at this point of the Mass.

(A) - That’s the choir

(B) - In places with no kneelers, kneeling is not compulsory til 2009.

The man in purple standing in the lower left part of the picture is the deacon for a nearby parish (the second permanent deacon ordained by Bishop Carlson, who was chosen to be the deacon for the Mass). The people you can (barely) see in the background is the choir. Some people *did *kneel, despite the lack of kneelers, like the RSM Sisters here. The people standing in front of them are priests from around the diocese.

My family and I attended the anniversary celebration of the Diocese of Saginaw. Some people were kneeling, (my family), and some weren’t.
I pray that one day we all kneel in unison. That day is coming.
WHAT was really important, is that the good people of the Diocese came out to show their support to the community outreach as well as acknowledge the 70 year celebration. Bishop Carlson gave a beautiful Homily-the lasting impression with me was when he conveyed that it is important to put aside our lists- our main focus should always be that, “Jesus is Lord”, after all it is our Faith.
Our condolences to Bishop Carlson and his family in honor of his father’s passing.
Paz, lis

we went to that Mass, I’d say that the music with an organ is good and the Bishop’s Homily, I love hearing the Bishop’s Homily.🙂
