I hope so. Balancing justice for the victims of abuse with the Church’s others missions, which will certainly be hindered by massive lawsuits, is quite a predicament.

According to the Diocese’s website, its total assets (as of the 2004-2005 fiscal year) were just over $38 million. The average sexual abuse lawsuit settlement in California these days is around $1.5 million. There are pending lawsuits filed by 143 plaintiffs. The math simply doesn’t work.

If litigation follows the Spokane model, expect plaintiffs to be awarded somewhere around $265 thousand ($38 million split 143 ways) each, plus whatever amount Diocesan properties and parish assets will net after liquidation. Of course Bishop Brom and his attornies will draw out legal proceedings as long as possible, driving up legal expenses to who knows where.
Its just a bad deal for all involved, except for the lawyers, and enemies of the Church.

I read the article and my heart is heavy with sadness, both for the victims and the Diocese of San Diego. The only winners here are the lawyers. They’ll be lining their pockets. Being a victim of abuse myself, the only healing is through reconcilliation.
