I hope you’re right that the Church won’t compromise on the wheat issue. But the reality is that they’ve already “diluted” their position and greatly compromised the “only wheat” mandate in Canon law to allow a fraction of one percent of the wafer to be wheat. .
I thought the low gluten hosts were still made of wheat, but by some process, the gluten content was reduced to .01 percent.
The Church stated in 1995:
**Low-gluten hosts are valid matter, provided that they contain the amount of gluten sufficient to obtain the confection of bread, that there is no addition of foreign materials, and that the procedure for making such hosts is not such as to alter the nature of the substance of the bread. **

It doesn’t say low wheat, but low gluten. I think they must still have to make the breads from wheat and water, but by some process, the gluten is reduced. Am I mistaken?

Dear Loyola,
Thanks for posting that letter. It is very telling. If I were to assist her is editing it, I would first throw out the whole thing, and start over. I wonder who helped her with it? It’s pathetic! Who does she think she is?

Her scolding, whining, and long-winded attempt to strong-arm Cardinal Ratzinger is so absurd I can’t believe it. My guess is that this mother has more stress and issues in her life than just this child’s celiac disease. For instance, where is the father of her four kids? Doesn’t sound like he is in the picture. Maybe he’s an alcoholic, which is why she is so opposed to it.

So, probably Mom is at her breaking point, and is venting her frustrations in life on the big, bad Catholic church. She’s obviously is enjoying the media spotlight and attention. When it all dies down, she’ll probably sink into a deep depression. The family really needs our prayers.

No, you are correct. The hosts are made with two wheat starches that have had most of the gluten removed. If she is still concerned about the very small amount of gluten in the host, the child can receive a very small piece of the low-gluten host or a few drops of the Precious Blood.

After reading the letter, as a Catholic celiac, I am extremely annoyed at the mom. But, I shouldn’t be surprised. Sadly, her attitude is rampant among the folks who post on celiac message boards. They are full of woe and it’s not fair, when in reality, the Church is most accomodating to celiacs. And then, the noncatholics are only to happy to start bashing.

God bless,

Kim, you missed this from her interview with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC:

PELLY-WALDMAN: Well, I believe that this a cannonball, a man made ball. And I do not believe Christ would want my child to obey a canon law that could be potentially harmful to her.

I believe the church can grow and change to meet the needs of the people. And as I’ve increased awareness of our plight, I‘ve really shown the Catholic church is an overwhelming response of support and an outpouring of compassion for Haley and for all Celiacs.

OLBERMANN: Where are we in terms of numbers? In terms of Celiac? It‘s probably something nobody in the audience has ever heard of before, isn‘t it?

PELLY-WALDMAN: Right. But the most recent study out of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Celiac Research is suggesting now that 1 in 133 people actually have Celiac.

OLBERMANN: What sort of percentage of that? Nationwide, is it two or three percent?

PELLY-WALDMAN: Yes, yes.

OK, so somebody explain this to me. If the statistic is that 1:133 people in the world suffer from this disease and there are more than 1 BILLION Catholics in the world, wouldn’t that equate to at least 7,518,797 Catholics who suffer from this disease? It’s amazing that we’re only hearing about this now.
I can’t believe that he, the reporter, asked if 1 in 133 is two or three percent. 1 in 100 is 1% so 1 in 133 is obviuosly less than 1%. In fact it is actually 0.752% or 3/4 of one percent.
Their math is as bogus as this issue.

I never seen so many self-righteous, holier-than-thou hypocrites in one place in my life. You slimeballs are the reason why I stopped coming here in the first place. You’re willing to stomp on any poor soul all because some cardinal or pope gave the go-ahead and do so while patting yourselves on the back for being such a good catholic. In 1963, Pope John XXIII signed papers ordering the threat of excommunication of anyone speaking out against the priest sexual abuse scandals including the victims. Do you honestly think that Jesus meant that when he gave Peter authority to bind and loose what is in heaven and earth? Do you think that a victim warning others of a sexually deviant priest is in a state of mortal sin and in thread of going to Hell? If so, then you’re no better than the self-righteous Pharisees in Jesus’ days; the ones that crucified the very God that they paid lip service to. Of all of the things in life that has tried my faith, going to this den of hypocrites was one of the worst.
