ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland — A Roman Catholic diocese in eastern Canada (search) plans to sell all its churches and missions to raise the money to pay the victims of sexual assault by a priest who was convicted more than a decade ago, a bishop said Monday.

The Catholic Diocese of St. George’s (search) will sell about 150 properties to raise $10.5 million as part of a settlement for the victims of the Rev. Kevin Bennett, who was convicted in 1990 of hundreds of sexual assaults over three decades as a priest in the province of Newfoundland.

Perhaps we can start a movement here from this message board and expand outward from there… to get donations sent in to this diocese to try to buy back their parishes?

Or is that a bad idea? Just brainstorming…

Forgive my very UN Christian thoughts regarding these ridiculous settlements, a substantial amount of which will line the pockets of greedy attorneys who can smell a cash cow far from the barn.

It is so sad that an entire diocese will suffer for the actions of a few predators. Kids will not go to good Catholic schools, there will be no place to worship, priests will not have retirement, all for the hideous evil that infiltrated our Church.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea to raise money although our diocese is also in bankruptcy and we may be looking for help as well

I’m trouble by the thought of who will buy it.
an anti-catholic film star(forget who he is) says he’ll buy the entire church and turn it into a gay bar

So there will be no Catholic Church in that Diocese? How sad! It seems that Satan will have his way there…

…“be not afraid” i once heard a holy man say…

…the gates of hell will not prevail, but no one said that hell wouldn’t try…

Peace:thumbsup:

It doesn’t look like the diocese of St. George’s has a website, but the archdiocese of St. John’s (of which St. George’s is part) does. I emailed them to ask where donations might be sent. I’ll keep everybody updated.

Its really sad that people resort to this…I feel badly for the victims of the abuse but this kind of thing makes me think that some (not all) are just out to tear down the Church…

Remember real reason for all of this: satan

No priests=no Eucharist!

Mmmmm…Good Old Fr. CORAPI I would reconize that quote anywhere.

“I am going to talk to you about the ENDGAME…the devils final assult…”

I’m all for sending the guilty to jail but saying that someone is owed $10.5 million (split 39 ways) boggles me. Let’s pray Rome steps in. But, in the meantime, there must be a place up to donate or help out?

Hey, let’s email Mel Gibson.

Yeah,

Mel could buy all of those Churches and have a ton of money left over. It’s hard to imagine that Canadians hate the Church enough to openly try to destroy it. Moreover, if the pedophile is still alive is he in jail?

In one way I’m glad that all of this has happened. At least the Church seems to be more careful about ordaining the seriously sexuallly disordered.

Zachary et al,

You seem to be opposed to monetary restitution for the sexual abuse committed by the Catholic clergy. Are you opposed to suing a large corporation that ignores sexual harrassment? Are opposed to suing a large corparation that promotes toxic environment? The Catholic Church is just such large corporation!

The Catholic Chuch has a documented history of ignoring pedophilia in own ranks. A Diocese often ignores reports of sexual misconduct committed by its own clergy unitl until the local laity refuse to tolerate it any longer. Then they move Priests from one Parish to the next hoping that their records do not follow them. The entire time the Church denies any accusations and conceals any evidence of wrong doing. This is still going today! It is happening in Diocese right now. But, with the rapid advances in communications that system of deniability is no longer effective. When an organization conspires to hide truth, protect criminals and attack the victims, that organization should be held liable for their actions!

If the Church can not learn from their mistakes and act in a just manner, than maybe it is time that we start closing more Dioceses!

It was NOT a pedophelia problem it was a HOMOSEXUAL problem that started when the Church became lax about ordaining homosexuals. Look at the Jay report. This activity, unlike the molestation of girls, was not static but spiked dramatically in the 60s and 70s.

Please provide some documentation. I agree this WAS a serious problem and incredible lapse in judgment but I think many steps have been taken to prevent this kind of situation. Again, provide some proof besides outrageous accusations.

Which diocese? What proof? Evidence? Do you have anything?

Baloney. Why are the innocent punished for the sins of the few guilty? IOW this is like reparation for slavery just because someone has dark skin. Most people were not involved in slavery, either as slaves or as slave owners. Why should everyone pay for the sins of the past?

Lisa N

Lisa,

It isn’t fair for the innocent but neither is it fair that some bishops covered up the sins of the past. You are correct that virtually all of the problems have nothing to do with pedophilia but with homosexuality. No doubt about it. Yet, there still is sexual abuse. Some penalty must be inacted against wayward priests and bishops. In some cases the rewards are way too large, but if it wakes up the laity to be watchful and prayerful and it forces the bishops to be diligent then so be it. No more homosexualist priests. Period.

Dan L

True.

And sadly, the innocent must suffer right along with the guilty. Those faithful priests who had no knowledge of misconduct, or perhaps some who did and reported such to the bishop, as well as all of the faithful, will now be left out in the cold, all because a handful of priests could not control their inordinate passions and those in authority did nothing about it. :nope: A crying shame…
Thinking of all the sacrificial offerings of previous generations, for the purchase of sacred articles and land for Church buildings, all wasted due to the sinful actions of a few men…These are the social consequences of sin…Let no one say, “my sins don’t hurt anyone else…”

Is it pedofilia or pederasty and the sexual abuse of boys?

I’ve heard some pretty nasty rumors about the forthcoming trials that our brethren in Spokane will have to face, too. This is bad, bad, bad. I hope that Holy Father Benedict will be able to directly intervene in these matters. Perhaps a short-term fix would be to grant priests bi-Ritual faculties and open new parishes under the auspices of the Eastern eparchies. Just a thought.

Do you know for a fact that the Bishops in this case covered up? I know this has happened in some diocese, but why do people paint a broad brush and assume there was a cover-up in every instance? I’m sure there are many of these cases of adults coming forward years later, where the diocese had no clue until the accusations were made.

If there wasn’t a cover-up, should the diocese have to pay such a large settlement? Regardless, we are in agreement that everyone needs to be more diligent, especially in the seminaries!
