Last fall (ladies…was it last fall or last summer?), there was a thread that encouraged just this.Maybe Catholic women should pick a day out of the year, and wear a headcovering the whole day, as a show of solidarity with all women, Amish, Muslim, and Catholic.![]()
I wear a mantilla to every Mass and to adoration…I keep it in my purse in case I go during my lunch break at work, or any other time the Lord calls me. In my parish, there aren’t any weird looks anymore, as some women wear them. I just take it off when I leave the sanctuary and put it away.
I once read an article writted by a Muslim woman who discussed the headcovering; she described that it was a choice, a sign of faith, and worn for modesty in submission to God. Her description was beautiful, and as a Christian, I think the one thing we can realize we have in common is that we also wear our veils out of submission to God.
It is modest, it is respectful, and it reminds us to cover our “glory” so that the greater glory of God can take precedence over our own vanity.
One thing I do admire about Muslim women is that they are counter-cultural (in Minnesota, anyway), in that their faith is literally worn on their sleeves…and their heads. They are a living witness, and that’s something we as Catholics fail to do all the time.
The witness to their own faith gives me courage to give visible signs of my own, and that’s something to be applauded.
