ok guys…i am conflicted, and hope not to be burnt on the stake.
So Christ is the perfection of the commandments, so there is no way he could dishonor his parents.
My feeling (which is not to be used as a measuring stick) is that he was using mild sarcasm bent towards testing.

This is a gospel scene I think about a lot, and I am always quite puzzled that it’s one of the Joyful Mysteries ( though I know the joyful message is “if you seek Jesus, you will find Him”). Why Jesus would stray, why Mary wouldn’t have trusted more, why Jesus would seem to correct his parents… lots of questions.

I’m not sure we can get a clear picture of what is going on between Jesus and His parents, or the nuances of the culture/ times. He was 12 and would’ve pretty much been considered an adult though, I think? So perhaps there was not much reason for their anxiety? Still it seems odd Mary would’ve had anxiety, and Jesus wouldn’t have let them know he was staying, but like I say, these are nuanced matters you can’t tease out of the text

What I’m thinking is that he would not have been credible at 12, even though His wisdom was advanced. He was teaching the teachers, allowing them to ponder what He said about the Messiah.

Point I ponder: It is entirely possible that Gamaliel, Joseph of Aramathea and
Nicodemus were present, but not named. All lent their support, directly or indirectly when the tide had turned and His betrayal was drawing near. In the cases of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, both, being faithful Jews, fasted and gave alms. Their respect and corporal work of mercy in preparing Jesus’ Body and burying it after the crucifixion could very well have been their justification. Compare this act to the words of the Archangel Raphael to the Elder Tobit (Tobit 12).

Not everything. He knew what was necessary for Him to accomplish His mission. Omniscience isn’t possible for the human brain during earthly life. That is a power He emptied Himself of to become like us.

Hmm. That’s an interesting thing to ponder. I think I will join you. For Gamaliel Saul’s campaign against Christians must have been disappointing. His advise included the possibility that the new movement was from God. Perhaps he did hear Jesus teach as a 12 year old like you’re thinking.

hmm very interesting take. I recently thought of him and in relation to the tradition in iconography ( a child with a man’s face) that he knew everything. That this sweet cute boy actually created the world and knew me right now and knew about iphones and covid 19 pandemic because he was God.

Yeah, I like to imagine Him as a child looking me in the eye. Then imagine those eyes looking at me belong to God. Gets me every time. Thank you.
