Good day to all of you!!!

My situation is this: I’m Catholic and I attend the parish closest to me, which has a lot of history and connection for me and my family. However, I’ve been feeling very disconnected lately because my parish is heavily involved in social justice issues and focus more on community instead of having a balance, the priests are from the Scalabrinian order, always talking about immigration and such. I tend to respect Tradition more and I feel as though the ones in charge of things don’t have attention for that. I haven’t been able to make good friends around my age (I’m 20) and my experience in the “youth ministry” has left me feeling very dry and since I am the older one in the bunch, I don’t want to stay there. I want something more solid in my life to nourish my faith, please pray for me. I’m still struggling with lust and resisting thoughts, and these types of things dishearten me and my search for holiness. I really want to switch parishes, but I don’t think I can, because I am an EMHC and I’ll hear people say “I’m giving up on God’s call” because of it. I really admire a Solemn Mass, especially the TLM. I live in New York City by the way. What do you say?

Are they involved in “social justice issues” or is it more like “political activism” because if it’s the latter, more and more I’m seeing the wisdom of Pope Francis saying we don’t need crusaders to promote the Church’s causes.

So yes sure let’s help whomever we can. But if that involves lobbying the government presumably on God’s behalf, to bring about loving concern for social justice through the power of force, it’s not something Jesus would likely have ever told anybody to do, especially in His name IMO.

Praying to the Holy Spirit to give you guidance, direction, strength, fortitude & wisdom in your time of need.

There is nothing wrong with attending another parish to find out if you might it might be a place more conducive for prayerful worship. If you find another parish that uses EMHCs then you can volunteer your serves there. Don’t worry about what other people might say, some one else at your parish will move into that EMHC position to replace you.

So…they’re preaching the Gospel message. What about this disturbs you?

At 20, you should be in a young adult group, not youth ministry.
In our Archdiocese you would not be permitted to be in a group with high school students.
Can you start a young adult group? Maybe that’s where you are needed. 🤷

Um the problem with that is the same line of thinking is used for attending a Protestant place of worship. They teach the Word of God…right? Does it matter?

Yes, it does. I’m not looking for just “fellowship”, I can get that at diocesan events. It doesn’t help going somewhere where there’s almost no one your age, and I do suggest that we do more for those in between young adult and teen years (18-21), I notice there’s a gap because some groups attend pubs and things like that for young adults. I did attend a series of talks in June for young adults (but was open to anyone) and it was really fulfilling being around more like-minded people. However, the problem is that at our parish what we’re fed is small. When I started going out, I started realizing how vast and un-banal the Catholic faith really is, with her history and undermined Traditions and teachings. The Church has always deepened the Word of God, and it doesn’t help when you’re just given the words and everything else is just “optional”, not “pastoral” enough.

What it sounds like is that you are seeking spiritual guidance for a deepening of your faith and what potention vocation you may have. I tried reverting at your age and sorry to say my requests went unanswered. I would like to help you.

Have you spoken with your priest? A deacon? Suggest you try a retreat preferably with a religious house. I was blessed with having scripture and church history study with a monk. Try connecting with an FSSP parish, my closest one is a 4 hr drive.

If you want something a little more substantial than surface devotions, maybe dig in for some solid food, not just spiritual milk, terms Paul used for the Good Stuff.

Here’s a book I’ve skimmed some but I’ve heard wonders. This could show you width and depth beyond what I think a lot of Catholics actually even know about or even think possible.

It’s on Amazon. Kindle for 14 bucks, I just bought it for an Audible credit (or $10), because I’m more likely to complete it listening than reading.

The Fulfillment of All Desire: A Guidebook to God Based on the Wisdom of the Saints

Another guy I recommend is Richard Rohr, although a third of the posters and lurkers would tell you he’s scary and dangerous so if they do, you heard it from me first. The value he has brought to so many people spanning three popes who were all made well aware of him and never did they nor his abbots censure him, but he does say things critical of the Church power structure so that’s big stuff. Avoid him like the plague if you don’t want to know anything that rustles the jimmies of many avid Catholics. I do not believe he is evil or scary, for the record, but frankly they can save their breath because if you want to know details, they are easy to find and I can tell you by PM both sides of the story if you want a brief overview without wading through a bunch of arguments, or having to choose whose side to be on. 👍

This may show part of why so many don’t like what he says. He definitely tweaks the “status quo”. Warning: it’s hard to unsee this 5 minute video, once having seen it. :signofcross: He has the “audacity” to characterize the Eucharist as a “divisive” sacrament, for example. A way to separate the worthy from the unworthy. Subversive but thought provoking.

What Did Jesus Really Teach

Hey all, and happy feast of the Epiphany (Little Christmas)

UPDATE:

I’ve been attending a new parish close by every other week, and they offer a beautiful Sung Novus Ordo Mass ad orientem once a month. I go to Holy Innocents in Manhattan once in a while as well (during the week), and that’s helped me get more focused on the sacred and in truly appreciating the beautiful Tradition we have in our Church.

I finally see that God provides and that He never forgets. I’ve never learned and experienced so much about my faith without truly going out there.

I thank all of you for your (name removed by moderator)ut. You’re all in my prayers!
