(Newser) – Discovery Channel will deepen its involvement with the supernatural in a new series called the Exorcist Files—with the unusual twist that the Vatican is helping out, Entertainment Weekly reports. The network will recreate investigations of demonic possessions and hauntings conducted by the Catholic Church, which is opening its files and allowing its exorcists to be interviewed.
“We explained we’re not going to try to tell people what to think,” says Discovery’s president. “The work these folks do, and their conviction in their beliefs, make for fascinating stories.” If all goes well, the network would eventually tag along with Vatican investigators on live cases. The series is expected to debut in the spring.

Interesting for sure.

Well… I am not sure what to think. I suppose this is part of an outreach on the part of the Church to establish better relations with the media and it’s culture-shaping power. But I really do not like the idea of making exorcisms into entertainment. If the producers are professional and respectful, and have good taste, I can see this being a good thing. However, if it’s cheap in anyway, I am really against the idea.

I think it could be good. Discovery used to produce a progam called ‘A Haunting’ similar to what has been described above. It was always respectful and I don’t think it was used for entertainment (e.g., Ghost Hunters on the Travel Channel, etc). If the Vatican series is along the same lines as A Haunting, it could really be a fantastic show.

That was one of the scariest shows i’ve ever seen:p

I seriously doubt the church would co-operate with a show denigrating the rite of exorcism into cheap entertainment. It seems clear to me that this is more a documentary style show about exorcism.

In other words no repeat of the whole “exorcist” debacle is likely.

I’m not sure - if this is for real - that this is the best idea. Although demonic possession is quite real, and the rite of exorcism is a great help to those that need it, I’m not sure parading this rite for the sake of curiosity is helpful.

Thought I’d post this nonetheless for awareness, opinions, and to see if anybody else can vouch for the reality of this ‘upcoming’ show or not.

Peace in Christ,

I’m very mixed in my opinion on this, too.

Having had some exposure to this kind of thing over the years, the last thing we need is a media-inspired frenzy of sensationalism. The reality is troubling enough, without having to deal with rampant misconceptions created by entertainers.

Of course, there’s also the pressing reality that demonic activity seems to be rising, particularly in the west were occultism and paganism is finding fresh widespread practice (as numerous exorcists of solid reputation have bemoaned.) Perhaps it is necessary for the Church’s perspective to get out into broader circulation, so that folks know there is real hope in Christ, rather than chasing pagan witchcraft and “cleansing rituals.”

To my understanding, the series is going to be regulated by catholic authorities in the field, so there’s hope. I’ll be checking this series out when it debuts. Lord, have mercy.

Father-Jonathan Morris (FOX News Contributor) (fatherjonathan.com/), on his Facebook page, posted the following:

“On the Drudge Report right now there is a link to an article that says Discovery Channel and the Vatican are teaming up to do a series on exorcisms. I can confirm that this will not happen. The “Vatican” is not involved. Bad reporting. Inappropriate PR stunt by Discovery.”

Oops, I didn’t see this

Well since its the usual sensationalism, we’ll just have to wait and see as to the respectfulness and veracity of this series by discovery channel.

Any colaboration by “The Vatican” will result in another self inflicted shot to the foot.

I just flat-out don’t believe “The Vatican” is out to sensationalize excorcisms TDC style.
You don’t have to get so angry about it. I just posted the article. I just hope the Vatican does what is in the best interest of the faithful.

God bless.

I think it would be good to normalise exorcisms, that they become like Confession. It would be a simple way to scare hardened souls, straight.

If people take on board the idea that there are devils, then they take on board the idea of Hell.
If they take on board the idea of Hell, then the possibility of their damnation arises.

“Jimmy Greavely went for an exorcism last Tuesday”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah. Had a problem with a few minor demons”.
“How’d it go?”
“Great. He’s feeling a lot better”.
“Yeah, Father Donovan’s a good man. That reminds me, I oughta go to Confession this Saturday, Easter’s comin’ up fast…”

Sorry, it wasn’t meant to be a personal attack on you. :o

I personally would have no Problem with Watching the Show.

I have a Feeling it will be Respectful and Non-Exploitive. 👍

Discovery Channel did not team up with Vatican for exorcism series

apparently, this is a PR stunt by the Discovery Channel to increase attention to their new series. I’ve seen no official confirmation or proof that they are actually in a “partnership” with the Vatican. What did I write about ratings-hungry producers?
