Salve omnes!

I was wondering, with everything that is going on in the world, does anyone here feel somewhat discriminated against?
I’m not trying to stir up anything (we’re all friends here) but, with all of the American Atheist signs going up, the President’s healthcare reform, and it also seems like if you say something derogatory about any race or religion besides Catholicism, you are called on it immediately. Don’t get me wrong here, racism is a terrible thing, but it seems like when people mention the Church, the sex scandal always comes up and people are constantly saying bad things about the priests and other humans who decide to live a religious life. Does anyone else notice this? Or am I just being paranoid?🤷 It worries me that this country that we live in (I know there are many of us who are not American, but I don’t know what it’s like in other countries) is going from Freedom of Religion to Freedom From Religion. Please tell me if anyone else feels the same way or if I’m just paranoid…

I feel like although I am in the majority (Christian), it is not acceptable for me to make public statements about my faith because I may offend someone.

This is evidenced by how many ‘friends’ jump at me on Facebook every time I make a religious remark. Yet many of my ‘friends’ will regularly post about homosexual “marriage” or abortion and receive nothing but praise for their comments.

Yes.

So much so that it’s a big contributing factor to my decision to make tomorrow my last day at the particular college I’m currently enrolled in.

Just one tiny example, all freshmen were required to read “The History of Sexuality” by Foucault. In this book, he both defends pedophilia/rape (in addition to other sexual things I had expected him to defend) and says that the entire world is repressed as a legacy of confession and the Roman Catholic Church… he also suggested that AIDS is a social construct that Catholics propagated.

I though my professors and classmates would find this ridiculous. He defends rape! He says pedophilia is totally fine and that child molesters should not be punished or even given therapy! But then… every other person in the room was waxing poetic about how “visionary” and “tolerant” this guy was, how we were all so repressed.

I asked by whom, just to clarify. My professor read the passages about Catholics. People brought up the crusades. People brought up the Holocaust (why??? No clue, but both were compared to opposing gay marriage and abortion), people brought up the sex-abuse scandal (which I tried to point out is silly in the context of a book condoning pedophilia, but to no avail). I quietly reminded them I was Catholic. My professor said, “oh we don’t mean you, we mean the hierarchy and those who are heterosexist and misogynistic and prude. It’s about the power relations, you see? And, with regards to sexual matter, the Roman Catholic Church exploits freedom in favor of absolutist morality (chuckle) to maintain power and get money to escape purgatory.”

Yeah, that was NOT a good class.

I also went to “The Bible isn’t sexist, don’t hate us” talk by one of the very very rare Christian professors. It all went well until he ended with “Except Catholics. Women should be priests and banning people from being responsible about sex (meaning contraceptives) is silly.”

And that’s just the beginning/ :doh2:

It has been getting worse over time, I think the agenda is starting to kick in for a lot of my classmates :hypno:

Yes, you are not paranoid! Happens more and more often, not only here. Bible warns us about this so we should not be surprised. We can not roll over and play dead, we have to speak out for the Truth, sin is sin! People should put their big boy pants on and stop whining when we don’t agree with them. oops, or big girl pants!

The Catholic Church is attacked most often because it is the true church. ❤️:yup::yup:

You’re right. If it’s Christian it’s automatically bad, if it’s about something else, it’s automatically good. But don’t worry, we Christians will be fine.

Freedom from Religion? Not going to happen, at least not beyond the extent it currently exists.

Peace,
Ed

PROUD to be Catholic with a big target on me! Bring it on! I consider it an open door to evangelize! I just smile and ask a few questions…

Did you know the Church invented the scientific method?

Did you know the church created schools, and colleges to educate people, so they could support their families, and learn to read the bible?

Did you know the Church built hospitals, and funded cures for illnesses.

Did you know that teachers are 4 times more likely engage sex crimes than a priest? Have you ever been warned of that on the news? Why do you think that is?

Did you know that most of the accusations against priests for pedophilia were actually gay men, and boys? Why do you think the media NEVER reported it was a homosexuality problem?

Did you know the Church through the “Pope John Paul II Institute” developed a none drug, healthy, all natural way to avoid pregnancy?

Did you know the Catholic Church lived, taught, and wrote the new testament Bible. She protected it, compliled it, published it, and gave it to the world!

That is disgusting… they’re brainwashing children. (yes, college students are still children, mentally. Many of them are just as open to baseless theories and notions as a three year old. No offense intended)

I really do fear for our society, but I think I’m going to get a (rather sinful) bit of happiness out of it when everything collapses in around them.

I agree 100% and I’m not offended at all. That’s one reason that I’ve made the decision to leave. The brain is still developing until at least age 22. When they’re about to slaughter a cow, they feed it higher quality food for a while, to improve the meat. It’s called “finishing”. I’m not going to stay and have myself “finished” off with slop!

🙂 Thankfully, there are lots of good schools that Catholic parents can send their children to without worry. Anyways, my point in sharing was that the sort of college I attend is really common, and it’s where a lot of the people that will be running the country in ten years are shaping their ideas— which does not bode well.

Im 16 and i agree too… We are being attacked.
John 16:33 DRA
“These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress: but have confidence, I have overcome the world.”

On the other side, though, I’ve noticed that a lot of the people who’ve stayed true to the faith through discrimination (which starts as early as middle school where I live, don’t know about you) have become stronger for it. Tempered by fire and whatnot.

So there’s hope! People like you 👍 and hopefully me, and a lot of people I’ve seen. Young people are becoming more hostile to religion, but the ones that aren’t are becoming stronger (don’t know if that makes sense)

I normally don’t but I understand where you are coming from. I went to a Family Christian Bookstore earlier this month to see if I could find a women’s daily Catholic Devotional Bible as Christmas gift for my sister and asked the woman working if they had any, she very curtly said:mad:, “Catholics have their own bookstores; we don’t care any Catholic materials.” Are Catholics not the originals when it comes Christianity? I was kind of shocked at her tone and the fact that she seemed to be shocked I would be in a Christian bookstore looking for anything dealing with Catholicism, not like I was looking for a Rosary. I kind of live out in the country and though we have a Catholic Church in town there is no Catholic Bookstore close by. I ended up finding what I was looking for at a local bookstore without being looked at odd.

Mostly the every day secular world makes me feel like my wife and I are the only Catholics (or perhaps the only Christians) left in the world, and the only time I’m reminded that there are others like me is when I go to Mass or when I come to a website like this one. Whenever people around me start to bash Catholicism and say a lot of things about it that I know aren’t true if I try to speak up in her defense 99.99% of the time I’m the only one defending the Church. And often among Catholics I feel like my wife and I are a minority within a minority since we actually believe we should listen to and try to live according to all of what is taught by the Magisterium of Holy Mother Church while polls have shown that the majority of Catholics don’t believe this.

Atheists say the same thing, though. Lots of people who lose their faith aren’t accepted by their families, and often feel like outcasts. They can also be subjected to views that atheists ‘choose’ to be unconvinced of the existence of God based on the fact that they want to do whatever they want, or because they’re rebellious. So I guess it goes both ways.

Having said that, you might be onto something. I don’t believe everything you mentioned is an example of discrimination, as some of them were examples of others expressing their own views or just examples of legislation that you disagree with, but it’s true that there is a bit of a growing bad attitude towards religious folk. I recall on the news recently (in the UK) there was talk of people being asked to remove examples of crosses and such from their clothing as people were getting offended.

Of course, you do tend to come on quite strong when it comes to your religious views.
