What’s an ‘Ancient cultural perspective’ ?
I meant that Genesis and all books of the Old Testament were written for the readers of the time ,
Since that’s false…
it’s no wonder that "ancient cultural perspective’ carries no weight (meaningless) wrt Adam/Eve

What is false? That people wrote down Genesis?

Yes Scripture is inspired btpy God, however, God used people to write down what was important. God relates to people in their time and place in space. If God wants something like Revelation or a Prophet, God explains it. Jesus explained the parables.

The Old Testament is full of motifs and imagery and concepts that the Ancients understood. This sometimes had modern people scratching their heads.

That “Genesis and all books of the Old Testament were written for the readers of the time”
To begin with, quote me in context please.
I meant that Genesis and all books of the Old Testament were written for the readers of the time , so they could understand the text.
The authors were putting what they knew into the Scripture, not what was unknown to them. God in inspiring Sacred Scripture had one intention, to give us what we need for our salvation. At a time of many gods being worshipped by many cultures, including in early Jewish culture, God was also establishing Himself as the one true God. This is reflected throughout the Old Testament and into the New Testament. Those who wrote down Sacred Scripture had a primary audience of current and near future generations. They got their message across with motifs and genre known in their times.

Prophets did the same, as well as some future prophecy. One prophet whose text is good to look at here is Ezekiel, active in the 6th century BC. We wonder at some of the meanings in this Book. The ancients would have been quite familiar with its different layers of meaning. God in ch 12 is telling Ezekiel to warn Israel of impending destruction. Israel says that prophecy is for future times. Read Ch12 27-28

God is the Author… of Sacred / Holy / of God → Scriptures!

Shall I quote word for word from Catholic Magisterium?
Yes sure and include whatever you can dig up about just who wrote Sacred Scripture down, who for example is the author of each of the Gospels or letters of St Paul, Kings , Ruth.

Who authored those books, and letters, who wrote them.
You could also explain divinely inspired and what that means for historically written work.

Who wrote and authored the writing on the wall and the first tablets of Moses.

Certainly with the word used to describe Adam’s exit, it is quite a strong word, ‘thrown out’ ‘evicted’

Adam is placed at first by God, in a garden made by God, then thrown out and placed opposite the garden and in the face of those fearsome Cherubim with their swords. We see this motif again in Revelation, flaming swords .
That’s right! The Fathers had some unique perspectives on those “flaming swords” too. For my money, I think St Ephrem was on to something with the ambition motif. Abigail Adams (president John Adams’ wife) used to regularly caution her husband against “ambition,” seeing it as a vice tied to pride. Our contemporary world has turned that on its head and praises ambition (at least in the corporate world in America). But it was not always so…

The entire Bible is male-oriented according to Ancient (and modern) cultures. Even G-d is the Father, and Jesus His Son. The Church hierarchy is male-oriented. With regard to the Creation, Adam is created first by G-d. Man was and still is considered superior to woman.
This!

Women in the OT are only mentioned when they had a part to play. Once that part was over, the focus is only with the men. Eve would obviously be assumed to follow Adam without needing to mention her. We may not like how male centered Judaism and later Christianity were but we have to understand these passages in their male centered positions.

That’s the unacceptable rad-feminist approach?

Not at all. It’s just how it was back then. Trying to put a feminist spin on it would be a huge error. They didn’t hate women…they just held no importance within the religion, workplace and business. Their only sphere of influence was the home. And don’t knock that, the home has a strong influence on who the adult will be.

Trying to figure out why God didn’t mention Eve after her role in tempting Adam is just a waste of time. She was no longer important to that part of the story.

  1. They were created so as to be companions.
  2. The scriptures were written from a male perspective.
  3. If the sin did not apply to Eve, it also would not have applied to Adam.

A great example of why the authors of the Old Testament Biblical books wrote for the peoples of their times. Thanks for proving my point.
God versus His Faithful Scribes?

vive la difference!

They’re both on the same “page” 🙂

AnyThing Else?
Waiting for your Vatican documents.

Exactly!

Followed by the Gender-Centric Whine… "And they never mentioned the color of Eve’s hair ! "

What bible study did you go to? Honestly, not only is that a ridiculous statement, it’s also one I’ve never heard of before! Do you ridicule everyone that doesn’t believe as you do?

What bible study did you go to?
Rad Feminism is recognized as very wrong - evil - by many Catholics…

They ridicule males - and rank amongst the epitome of Sexism…

Their skin? Appears thin, eh?

I realize this. I’m not realizing what your point is in trying to understand the A and E story/hair color/radical feminism. Which radical feminist group ever demanded that Eves hair color would promote their cause. Or were you just going off on a tangent?

It’s an understandable by those who’ve rubbed shoulders… tongue-in-cheek representation
of how even more ludicrous were/are the genuine demands of the rad-fems…

They railed against the all-male hierarchy on the one hand -
as they blared the Luciferian - "Non Serviam!"
as they demanded to become Pope!

== a pitiful example of any claiming to be Christian doing the Power Tripping Dance
No servant of the servants of God - Just Bossy Bossy … I wanna be a lord…

Again… the Rad-Fem Twist… UnCatholic to the Core…
News Flash, this thread is not about modern issues like feminism, it is about the Old Testament and how Ancient culture norms are evident within its text.
You continue to give us examples of the modern interpretation of these texts with you bias towards rad fem twist etc.

Please stop, this is not about feminism or modern takes.

I wanted to open a discussion thread or two in relation to the Old Testament and how we can read it through the eyes of the ancients. We might even learn /discover/dispel themes and issues and have a good discussion in the process. There is no need for this hostility.

So many people say what does that mean for the Old Testament, lets discuss what that meant.

Patty has brought up a good point, what was important at that point in the story.

You are going way off topic, if you wish to go this route, feel free to start a new thread pertaining to these verses and feminism.

this thread is not about modern issues like feminism
Had shades of rad-feminism never entered into this discussion,
there would not have been a need to straighten that out.

The OP has been answered.

There was no necessary need for any more talk about, e.g., EVE - In Genesis.

It’s in Genesis - which is for people of All Time

Anything Else?

Back to the OP - Scripture and Garden of Eden

To the woman -
"I will increase your labour and your groaning,
and in labour you shall bear children.
You shall be eager for your husband, and he shall be your master."
Forgive me if this is beyond the purview of that which you want to discuss from the OP, but the phrase “you shall be eager for your husband” piques my interest. What does “eager for” mean, specifically; that is, what does this look like in practical terms? What are the implications of this idea for a wife in current times?

To the OP: Thank you for starting this interesting thread. If you are willing, I would love to see these types of discussions regularly. I appreciate you sharing the Hebrew and your insight.

Why so salty? I do not understand the hostility going on here. The OP has done nothing to provoke such harsh responses (and I didn’t even quote the “rad-fem” stuff…). Can we please be civil during this interesting thread?
