As many of you know, I am not a fan of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass but I do recognize both its validity and necessity.

However, I has a discussion with a Deacon from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee today about how my parish celebrates the Mass (and why I switched to the parish):

  1. *]Both forms (Ordinary and Extra Ordinary is used)
    *]All Masses are Ad Orientum
*]All Masses use the Altar Rail and Communion on the Tongue using intinction.
    *]Chant
*]Extensive use of Latin (in the Ordinary Form it is priest specific on how much is used).
He is still under the impression:

    1. *]Extraordinary Form of the Mass was abrogated (He even seems to be unaware of Summorum Pontificum which I mentioned. :bigyikes: )
      *]Ad Orientum is not allowed.
*]Altar Rail and Communion on the tongue are not allowed.
      *]Latin is not allowed.
Now I know the Archdiocese has had trouble with previous administration(s) in the Archdiocese, but is it so bad there that the ordained ministry is unaware of what Rome has said?

He has said prove my assertions but I am not sure he would accept anything I have to say.

    1. Yes probably so, I think that you will find so in other places around US…
I’ve found many quote the US bishops but don’t often the Vatican

I am also afraid that this sort of thing would be found in Canada also. In my diocese, the liberal priests are abundant!:crying:

  1. Ignorance about #1 might be understandable if he is not one to keep up with current events.

Ignorance about #2-4 are very common. I would say that it is inexcusable but it is probably what he was taught. So, part of the blame probably lies elsewhere.

Still, he has an obligation to look into this. I was always taught that willful ignorance of the Catholic faith was a mortal sin. You’ve already pointed out the errors that he believes. Other than that, the only thing you can do is pray for him.

Well, after work, I decided I needed to go to Mass so I traveled 20 miles to my parish. Guess what… completely in Latin except for the responses after the reading and the response to the Psalm. I definitely need to brush up on my Latin. 😊

You’ll probably pick up the responses fairly quickly. Most people seem to. Now, understanding the Gospel, for instance, is a different matter. But, that is where a Missal comes in handy.

Actually, this was a OF not an EF Mass. I have a “Handbook of Prayers” that has the Latin beside the English for the OF Mass, but I left it in the car. I should of realized that Latin was going to be used when I saw Fr. W coming into the Church. 😊

We did the same thing on Sunday - expecting English at the Noon Mass, only to find Fr. W and Latin as well. 😃 Which was not a bad thing, but I had not grabbed a booklet on the way in. I think the NO in Latin is a thing of beauty at Grotto.

I discovered a very amazing thing! I knew more of the Mass in Latin than I thought I would!! 🙂 That was a very cool feeling!!

But I think I’m going to still make my own little Latin NO insert for my '62 Missal, so that way I’m set no matter which Mass we end up at. 👍

Yep. I realized that. I stand by what I said. I think that you will pick up the responses fairly quickly. It just comes with being exposed to the language.
