Disgusted with Local Paper & Papal Visit Coverage

My local paper, The Dayton Daily News, has really disgusted me today. Back in the winter months, they devoted an entire front page to one big photo and a huge headline regarding the outcome of a basketball game (I think it was basketball. I know it was some sport.)

I grabbed the paper that morning and literally thought we had been bombed again or something due to the huge head line that said something like “NOT AGAIN!” or something of that nature. Scared the heck out of me till I saw it was regarding sports! Then I was mad. Didn’t really think it warranted that.

Now the Pope is here and it’s big news. What does it warrant? A small (less than 2" x 2") photo along the side of the newspaper and a story on page 7 while the Virginia Tech shooting anniversary gets most of the page with the focus on should students carry guns?

I don’t mean to downplay Virginia Tech. It was a horrible event and my heart goes out to those people. However, the Papal visit is important news and a CURRENT event!

I am seriously considering cancelling paper and telling them why.

I’m so surprised! For some reason I made the assumption that there was a larger Catholic population in the NE. Was I wrong about that? I really don’t know where I got the idea in the first place. And why fault him for bypassing Boston. Heck I’m pretty disappointed he’s not in my hometown but I really didn’t expect it! lol.

It’s such a shame for any bashing to be going on. To me, even if you’re not Catholic, how can you hate anyone whose primary goals are love and morality and spreading the word of Jesus Christ??? He just seems so sweet and kind! How can you hate that?

With regard to the Hispanic issue, I’m not overly fond of people coming into the country illegally. It’s less than ideal. Although I can see their point because my husband and I have paid tons to have him here from England and still will have to probably pay another $1000 for him to move from permanent resident to citizen, Ridiculous. I can’t judge people who are most likely desperate and trying to make a better life (not to derail the topic here!). I do like the fact that most Mexicans are Catholic and so it only makes our Catholic numbers greater in the US.

The popular talk show host, and he is Catholic, said that because of the sex abuse scandal in the Boston area and the church closings that the Pope should have made the effort to come to Boston to apologize. It is the first visit of a Pope since this scandal came about.

People are angry that Cardinal Law is at the Vatican. Old wounds surfaced, and people can air their anger.

When the scandal broke out, the newspaper carried it on a regular basis for about 1 year.

My feeling is that if the Pope had scheduled to come to Boston, they’d still have found fault.

After watching all of the HF’s visti with the Bishops yesterday I was quite impressed with him, his talk, and his wisdom.

This morning I retrieved the morning paper from the walkway and eagerly opened it to see what the coverage was. After all, yesterdays paper had a large picture of his arrival on the front page.

Today’s “Cincinnati Enguirer” had the following Front page Headlines (From top and largest to bottom)
HIGH COURT OK’s LETHAL INJECTION
VICTIMS LET LOOSE ON “VIRAL INFECTOR”
SOME OF MAUPINS ABDUCTORS IN CUSTODY
POPE: CLERGY SEX SCANDAL BADLY HANDLED

His Holiness’ story was at the bottom right of the front page. It was like he was almost pushed off.
I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything different but after the firm, but hopeful talk about growing secularism and the need for greater effort and unity, I had hoped for a more upbeat headline.

I stopped getting my local paper… it was so depressing and seemed full of stories that were by people who made their story and called the paper and said: " hey print our story" there is an odd slant on the news . i read this forum and more and more get my news and info from online sites. I am not sure where things are heading, but to take Christianity out of the culture seems to be a goal of some.
To promote their agenda…

I like my culture and want to be around people who like it too.
why do i have to constantly be worried about offending someone.

If you don’t currently have access to it…I am going to suggest you calll your local cable company, because frankly, its invaluable and all Catholic homes should have it!

Generally, its the only station I put on anymore! I can’t stand to watch network TV and the trash they promote…and I get better news coverage on the web.

Comment regarding this mornings Mass though…who’s brilliant idea was it to have choirs from ALL OVER the US to sing and all in their own styles? Why couldn’t we for ONCE have traditional hymns?? Sigh…

Amie, all our news in this little burg is AP stuff that they buy. Nothing to cheer the devout soul out here.

I’m resigned to the fact that secular media serves different ends and is driven by different impetuses than those that animate me and those who love the Bride.

And yes, even so, it is so dismal that one wants to give someone a piece of their mind.

I’ve opted to use the computer to selectively cull my “news.” It’s much less in your face. I can click off when I see all the wrong stuff. Much better than TV which I’ve booted out of the house 4 years ago.

Even a bit better than a newspaper too because I can always find something worth knowing, New Advent, Zenit, EWTN, First Things, etc.

Sadly, there is certainly something to bash about there, though it preceded his pontificate. I do wish he would fire Cardinal Law from whatever job he has in Rome and send him back to Boston to face whatever the courts have in store for him.

Otoh, no matter what His Holiness did it would not be enough for many people. I heard interviews with reps from SNAP and Voice of the Faithful calling the Pope “a coward” for not coming to Boston and meeting with them. I’m thinking, what if he went and sat there to be harangued by them, individually or in groups for a whole day, would that provide their “healing”? Somehow I doubt it.

On radio yesterday and today …

They said Catholic schools children should have not been bused from the area to see the Pope because of the cost. Sixty plus churches closed in the area for various reasons.

Also there battle over a donation of land or money by one family as the money was left for a certain purpose and now it is being used used for something else.

Cardinal Law came to Boston in 1984 as Archbishop. The first lawsuit surfaced in 1990 with Porter. Most of the actual abuse took place much earlier but he did fail here. They also bring up Bishop McCormack of New Hampshire who was involved. As a guest on the radio, Phil Lawler, writer, stated that 65% or 75% of the bishops knew this was happening??

My local “fishwrapper” newspaper (dailydemocrat.com/) has had one short article from a national news feed on Wednesday on the second to last page of the main section stating that the Pope was on the way to the US. There was nothing in the Thursday paper. This is a paper that serves a community that is 25% Roman Catholic (3,000 families)!

there’s quite a bit of coverage here in the new york/northern new jersey area, perhaps because we are lucky enough to be on the Holy Father’s itinerary.

for example, this morning on the new york city public radio station i heard two stories on the selling of papal memorablilia and the ethnic german parish Pope Benedict is visiting this afternoon, respectively.

it seems the print media is giving more attention to the pope’s attempts to address the clergy sex abuse scandal, which is always risking to dominate the news coverage, rightly or wrongly.

Hey…its been then some of the coverage…I am so outraged! I have read all sorts of articles from major news outlets where they have completely take his words out of context and turned them into what they want them to be. For instance, an article this morning is entited: Pope makes veiled attack on US over Iraq They took ONE sentence out of his entire address to the UN and came up with that!!! Selective reporting…all to support their agendas! DISGRACEFUL!

He did NO SUCH THING! There is no more reporting of the facts…its all about adding commentary and making “statements” these days…disgraceful!

I would suggest that people so disgruntled turn more to Catholic news sources. There is Catholic online for example on the internet. I subscribe to the excellent weekly "National Catholic Register"and they have had very extensive coverage for weeks beforehand.

My local news mentions the visit, not too much or too little. But then again it’s Florida and while most of us are New Yorkers there are still lots of protestants around!
