I just got done listening to a sermon on Dismas -
The Priest told the story how Dismas was a robber -
and he had compassion on Mary, Joseph and the Holy baby.
He didn’t rob them - but offered a place to rest.

Many of the paintings of Jesus on the cross -
show the two thieves - as the same age as Jesus -
Never noticed that before -
Dismas should actually be in his mid 50’s, at least.

Just a thought …

The painters may not have known the story of the good thief when they did their work.

I had never heard that story either.
 
All artwork is romanticized, as no one was there. The only image we have that might be accurate is on the shroud. If you listen to physicist Fr. Robert Spitzer, there is amazing evidence for the supernatural origin of the shroud’s image.

A thought: Many of us venerate Christ’s image from the Shroud. Since there is zero credible evidence that it is man-made, and it is impossibly detailed to be accidental, it is therefore reasonable to hold that the Lord created it. Thus, it is worthy of veneration.

IIRC, that story might have come from some early Christian writings, but it was also in the writings of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich and found in the book, “The Life of Jesus Christ and Biblical Revelations”. I highly recommend it for spiritual meditation. It was one of the books that Mel Gibson used in his research for the movie, “The Passion of the Christ”.

Wow. Saint Cathrine Emmerich -
An older guy at church always makes reference to her - wonderful things.
4 volume set - I’m not sure I can donate that much time.
I will do more research on her life - though !
