I am surprised an incident has not happened before like this at Disneyworld. I have never been there, but assumed these were man made lagoons that had no access go waterways filled with alligators! I am surprised Disneyworld did not have some type of barriers.
What a tragedy for this family. I can’t imagine the horror. I am so glad they were able to find the little boy’s remains.

Barriers won’t work. But lots of signs - cleverly getting attention - should be prominent. Its a variety of dangers but gators and snakes are probably the most frequently nearby.

Maybe a sign with a picture of Tick-Tock Croc on it? Seriously though, to a Midwesterner “no swimming” means “no life guard present”, “rocks and garbage in the water”, “high levels of e coli”, and “we don’t want the liability”, not “you might get eaten”.

Isn’t that a good thing? The bears and mountain lions can kill the deer during the rest of the year, instead of Suzie Soccer Mom’s SUV.
From my perspective it would be better to let people kill more deer and push the bears back into Arkansas and the mountain lions back into Colorado. Actually, though, I don’t think black bears are big deer killers. Mountain lions sure are. But they don’t kill enough of them to keep Suzie safe driving on a country road at night.

The U.S. is a big country, and it has places that are primeval wild. If I had my way, predators that kill humans would be pushed back into those wild places and eradicated from places where people live. Personally, I would strangle the last bear outside a national park if I could, with the entrails of the last alligator outside southern Louisiana swamps sooner than see a single human being killed by either one.

There really should not be any either.

This is sad, I do agree, but this is also FL, I know the family was from the upper midwest, but I assumed knowing about how common alligators were in FL was just common sense, plus, last week, there was a video and news that went global of a giant alligator that roams a FL golf course, no one bothers it and he doesnt bother anyone, he has become sort of a tourist attraction some say.

Its natural for people to want to blame someone when a death happens, especially a child, and Im sure they will sue someone, fight to get warning signs up, even though its FL. We cannot ‘safety proof’ everything in this world though, people are still going to meet their demise with wild animal attacks, they are just doing what God created them to do, hunt and eat.

This isn’t about “safety proofing” everything. It’s about providing common sense warnings so people can proceed with them in mind. Strong undertow signs serve a purpose, as well, for instance and it isn’t to bubble wrap the world. DW presents itself as a child-friendly safe haven. I’m familiar with the prevalence of FL alligators and I still wouldn’t anticipate that DW hadn’t taken steps to actually close the lagoons to them. It’s actually somewhat stunning that it didn’t.

I disagree. After seeing the photos of the place where this happened, there is no doubt in my mind that it was designed to look like a beach. Apparently it is common for families to play and wade at the edge of the water. “No Swimming” means do not submerge yourself in the water. It does not clarify that its dangerous to stand ankle deep in the water or even to have your kids stand too close to the water because they could be hauled off by an alligator!

I agree. Plus, it is Disneyworld. One of the happiest places on earth for families and children!

There was an article yesterday, that the incidence of injuries and deaths from both sharks and alligators are in the increase.

People just are too comfortable being close to these apex predators.

Too much television.

And the crocs and gators and sharks have lost their fear of humans.

Unfortunately, humans are not actually at the top of the food chain.
What you say is very true!

Why I remember working on a construction site in a swamp that was home to a gator that was some 5 feet long. All those workers thought of it as a pet and started feeding all kinds of leftovers and fixings. I tell you what that gator got way too comfortable with the humans and it got a bit dangerous. Many a work told me of their run in with the gator. Boy did it make me cautious especially when I was assigned to the night crew. I was always affraid of being ambushed by the thing. I was reassigned to a different work site later that summer so I can’t say how or if the situation was resolved.

Too many people think alligators are “like” television.

[Not.]

I was watching a television program where they showed how easy it was to “defeat” an alligator by running and making sharp turns.

Well, …

[Spent too much time with crocs, giant constricting snakes, spitting cobras, etc. And mosquitos that slurp chemicals that are supposed to kill them.]

[Watch a hippo chase a dog some time.]

I remember I went to Florida in 2004. This was after the hurricanes that they had. The family whom we stayed with had to leave their house for about a month due to the hurricanes.

They said, that the family who they stayed with, lived so close to the water, alligators could be seen walking down the road.

I remember our reaction was, “Did you guys call anybody”, they responded, “No, their seen as dogs”.

If you want to attract an alligator or croc, just shuffle your feet through shallow water. They think it is their regular prey. Sounds just like it.
