Anyone know where I can find either online or in print an English translation of St. Robert Bellarmine’s Disputationes de Controversiis Christianae Fidei?

Thanks 👍

AFAIK it has never been translated into English.
Right. And that’s a pity, since from my fairly brief examination of the work it seems pretty impressive and thorough. I think it needs to be translated–once I get the two editing/translating projects I’m currently working on off my plate (which will be years, no doubt) I may approach Ignatius and see if there would be interest. Chemnitz’s Examination of the Council of Trent, one of the more thorough works of apologetics on the Protestant side, has been translated–it’s time someone did the same for Bellarmine.

I’m dubious about this. The supposed English translation entry has no info on the translator and the title is still in Latin. Furthermore, note that another copy (also with no direct indication of any language other than Latin) is given as being in Ganda. The chances of this work having been translated into this particular African language are pretty small, though of course it can’t be ruled out (maybe there was some Catholic missionary in Uganda with lots of time on his hands and a desire to refute Protestant competitors). I suspect that this entry is a mistake. The other references you give contain a reference to the Latin work and the phrase “English translation,” but you apparently did not bother to check that they were speaking about English translations of that particular work–none of the entries I looked at were talking about that.

It is of course possible that the WorldCat entry is correct and that someone translated the work into English in the early 17th century. I will look into it, but so far I’m skeptical.

Thanks for checking. That Worldcat looks like a typo, but I’m not 100% sure yet. So far my search for evidence of an English translation has come up empty. It would take me a century to try and read it in Latin 🙂

Contarini, let me know if you ever get around to translating it. I’m surprised that a work of this magnitude (by a doctor of the Church no less) is so difficult to find.

Liberty Fund has published a book that contains translations of part of Bellarmine’s disputations on Papal power and on Laymen. catalog.libertyfund.org/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=1191&vmcchk=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1

Translations of Bellarmine’s disputations on the Word of God can be found at aristotelophile.com/current.htm – scroll down the page a bit.

Don’t know of any other translations so far.

The Disputations are very long: several volumes, and each volume containing several controversies, each itself divided into books and chapters.

Mediatrix Press has provided parts of the work. And I think they desire to complete it based on what I recall… Yes, they are taking donations for it.
