An article in the Boston Globe yesterday reports on the removal of a part-time priest from the parish of St. Albert’s in Weymouth. No explanation is given as to why he was moved but the priest, the Rev. Robert Bowers, was a known progressive and dissenter on a number of hot-button issues. The parishoners at St. Albert’s are furious at ArchBishop Sean O’Malley for the priest’s removal. This is very similar to the removal of another priest from St. Albert’s (Rev. Ron Coyne) about a year and a half ago. Coyne was also known as a liberal, dissenting priest (ex., he preached that hell doesn’t exist, welcoming to gays, etc.) and the parish overwhelmingly supported him as well. St. Albert’s was originally slated to close and most of the parishoners defiantly had a year long occupation of the church that was ultimately successful. I think that these priests are scandalizing the faithful, causing disunity and leading them away from the truth and I’d be willing to bet that The Boston Globe won’t let this die any time soon - I predict there will be a series of reports and articles about this issue in the near future. They’ll do anything to discredit the church.
