Eating None, you can easily do both

Sleeping

**Tough. Someone can’t help being sleepy, but if they can’t stay awake, they are a danger.
Maybe a time-lock on the ignition at their expense? **

Texting Same as DUI

Talking on phone None, it might really be necessary

Drinking** Same as now**

Sleep narcotics
Same as DUI

Eating - nothing, although it can give you heartburn and make you gain weight.
Sleeping - its own punishment, usually death, but you can harm others too. 😦
Texting - very dangerous, people should just stop doing it
Talking on phone - Better than texting but still very dangerous
Drinking - Somehow drunks frequently get out alive but kill others. DUI laws already exist.
Drugs/sleep medications/narcotics - Same as drinking - give them a fine/jail time

Sleeping? Is sleep-driving very common?
That’s what I was thinking. I almost thought the OP slipped it in there as a joke… It’s not like you drive across town while sleeping, then crash… 😃

People should pull over to talk on the phone. It wasn’t that many years ago that NO ONE had phones in their cars and we all managed somehow to stay connected and get important things done.

Same for texting but it’s at least twice as dangerous because it requires that you look at a 2-5 inch screen for several seconds.

Sleeping? If someone has repeated incidents of driving while exhausted that cause problems for others then something needs to be done. But really, the sleeping thing was a joke, right?

Statistically speaking, speeding contributes to more traffic deaths than anything. Texting is more dangerous than drink-driving.

Actually, the sleeping is not a joke, sadly:(. It is common among truck drivers, night workers/shift workers, cancer patients, and people on medications like Ambien/Lunesta.

I talk on the cell phone but it’s very rare and my rule is that the call cannot last more than 120 seconds after that I’d have to rap it up, even then my phone calls don’t last more than roughly 45 seconds. The reason?

I might need to notify someone I’m lost and need directions or something. Why do I keep it short, because I’m smart enough to realize my focus drops when on the phone and I don’t like driving with limited focus. I don’t think my precious little airbags are gonna save me if I get in a car wreck.

Being sleepy does cause accidents. I understand that, after you’ve been awake for a certain amount of time, it’s as bad as being drunk. Obviously, though, you can’t punish people for being tired. 🤷

I never thought the sleep thing was a joke.

In HS, I actually knew somebody whose sibling died because they fell asleep while driving on the freeway. Those long empty miles are hypnotic at night, and at 65 mph there are no second chances.

Short of closing the roads at night (not going to happen) you can’t prevent it. Nor can you penalize someone for the human body’s limitations.

It is impossible to sleep and drive at once. I answered text and drive.

Very interesng … As of today, ZERO people consider drinking and driving as the most hazardous choice & this is the one we have a laws for.

That’s probably because it is illegal, while the others are not, and so everybody thinks they are OK (well except sleeping anyways).

Eating Unless it is actually affecting your ability to drive, should be legal. If you get into an accident or almost get into an accident a province offense for driving without due care and attention $225 fine, unless it’s a accident causing death. In such case, a criminal charge of wreckless driving causing death punishable either by summary conviction or by indictment
Sleeping B] Same as DWI

I’m of the firm belief that when it comes to eating and drinking, or texting or talking on your cell phone that unless it’s actually affecting your driving, they should not be illegal. IMHO, the driving without due care and attention charge was sufficient and all this new distracted driving law is nonsense and discriminates against those of us with enough common sense to do all of the aforementioned in a safe manner during very low risk driving situations (ie: read a text while stopped at a red light).
