Divided loyalties in my family

If your dad knows about it, what does he think about it? Why would he not be able to serve as a “check and balance” if he is OK with it?
And why is your mother not going through her husband on this issue and not her son?

Frankly, though I support his right to legally own a gun, that is not relevant here. If mom isn’t comfortable with it, that is her right. This is more about respecting her wishes in her home. Why could your brother not wait until he moves out to keep his own firearm, out of respect for the woman who raised him, clothed him, fed him, and is supporting him currently? Her request to your brother isn’t unreasonable; her request to you is.

The best bet is for him to as you believe, keep the guns out of her home with a friend until such time as he has his own place.

Right.

Also, there probably need to be two parents who approve/tolerate something before it gets to be in the house.

My husband deeply, deeply dislikes dogs. It wouldn’t be kosher for our kids to believe that if they had my OK on getting a dog, that we could get a dog, even though it made their dad miserable.
