Another thing also, the real test for the true Church is not by means of “persecuting.”

I didn’t say that it was the only test. But can you believe that a church is loving if it persecutes, imprisons, tortures, and kills those who do not accept its teachings?
40.png
hlgomez:
The real test is LOVE. DO you have LOVE in your church? If you have, then why do you hate everybody else outside your “church?” That’s the test.
Yes, love is ultimately important. I have love in my church. I do not hate all those outside my church. If I did, I would either not communicate with them in any way or I would laugh at them and withhold the truth from them. But I am doing neither. Rather, I am sharing what I believe is the truth so that all can hear it and have the agency to accept it. Many people believe that if you are not kind, you are not being loving. But if you have a young child running toward a highway, and you catch the child and swat that child on the butt, are you doing so because you do not love that child? Obviously not. Love can come in many forms. One type of love is called “tough love”. I am presenting what I believe to be true out of love.

If you downplay the facts about the Inquisition, you are just covering up the great iniquities that the Catholic church has committed in the past
I say again, PRODUCE THE DOCUMENT AND POST IT HERE.

Where is the document that says this??? Can you rpoduce one? You’re purely speculating.

Pio
What document(s) do you want? I doubt that you would accept any that were not from the Catholic church.

hlgomez:
I mean a genuine document, not based on hearsay.

Pio
What do you mean by a genuine document? What is this document supposed to state? What proof are you asking for?

I’m simply asking a geniune document. Any proof that you can produce. It doesn’t matter where it come from as long as it is not based on hearsay.

Pio

I’m asking proof about your attacks against the Catholic Church with regards to the Inquisition.

rod of iron:
Yes, you are correct. My church is not only 2000 years old. My church was established before the formation of the world. I belong to the Church of the Firstborn. This Church of the Firstborn is the church that Jesus established in the beginning. That church is spiritual first. It continues spiritually whether or not it is physically upon the Earth. It appear that the Catholic church is just physical. This is what makes the Catholic church a man-made church.
I see you are appealing to the eternal claim. Ireneaus too spoke of the Catholic Church as being eternal. As you claim your Church is eternal, that would mean eternal truths reside in it. The question is, does you church change doctrines? If so they are no eternal. For the Faith, which are embodied in the doctrines, are to be eternal yet if you change doctrines then it is not eternal. The Catholic Church does not change doctrines. Furthermore, you say since the Catholic Church is physical it is not the true church, how gnostic. Is physical some how bad? Are we not physical as well as spiritual? Was not Christ a body? And is the Church not the Body of Christ himself? As a body, we are physical and spiritual. Our essence never changes, for it is eternal.
rod of iron:
The Catholic church as it exists is the successor of the Roman Empire. The Catholic church adopted the hierarchical structure of the Roman Empire and used its power to persecute all that opposed the Catholic church for many, many centuries. The church of Jesus Christ does not persecute. That is one way you can tell a fraud. If a church persecutes others who do not believe like them, the church is not Christ’s church. The Catholic church has such a track record of persecution. This record can be seen in the Inquisition and the Crusades. The Catholic church spent centuries trying to force non-Catholics into believing what the Catholic church taught. Christ’s church does not force people to believe. Forcing others to bellieve like you and taking away their agency are ploys of the devil. Since the Catholic church has this track record of forcing people to believe its doctrines and comply to them, it cannot be the church that Jesus established on the Earth.
You seem to be confusing infallibility and impeccability. When Catholics claim the Church is infallible, that means she can define doctrines that are free in error, this does not mean she is perfect. Christ said his followers would be a mixture of good and bad. In revelations it talks about how Christ sacrificed the Church to wash her clean, why would she need to be washed clean if she was already clean, i.e. without sin? I also imagine you would be hard pressed to find a group that is innocent of anything. The fact of the matter remains, the Church is composed of sinners and saints. As unfortunate as it may be that sinners get into the hands of power, it is a fact of life, one that Jesus himself predicted.
Futhermore, when you assume the “Great Apostasy” theory, it is making Jesus look like a fool. For he had for a thousand and some odd years confused because he was a horrible teacher. A good teacher has his students understand him. However, opponents who spout this theory have us to believe Jesus was horrible teacher because people were misled by him until centuires later someone finds the gnosis, or hidden truth. How arrogant it is too assume everyone who came before you was too stupid to figure out what Jesus meant until a couple centuries ago.
Yet Jesus was a good teacher, because his followers knew what he meant and continued it on til the present day in the Catholic Church, which may have made mistakes in the past but Christ did not claim his followers would be perfect here on earth.

Rod of Iron,

You have to post the following (or answer the following):
  1. The Pope/s who ordered the persecution.
  2. The document/s of what exactly the Pope/s said.
  3. The date of that document/s.
Again, don’t just copy-paste hearsays and claim it as a valid document/evidence.
You have to support your allegations with tangible, real, genuine evidence.
If you can’t answer these questions, then I must conclude that your allegations are based on HEARSAY.

Rod of Iron hath said:

“Yet, no mention of the Catholic church being the church spoken of in those 2 verses. I can make the same claim about my church.”

The Catholic church was the only church in existence at the time those verses were written. Therefore there was no need to refer to the CC explicitly.

Unfortunately for you the RCOJCOLDS (Community of Christ) did not even exist prior to the 1830s:rolleyes: , so these verses could not possibly be reffering to it.

Very well said. :clapping:

Just as a side note, I am posting this thread as a common “complaint” I hear from Protestants. I am Catholic, but wanted some outside viewpoints.

rodofiron:

Your tenacity is something to be admired. Your stubborness is a rare thing these days. However, historical documents from the first century A.D. to the 10th century A.D. (when the Oriental Orthodox church schismed) show only One Church existed, the Catholic Church as she is known today. You can deny it ad nauseum, but no valid document will ever disprove this. Also, no document will ever prove that your church was around before Joe Smith.

rodofiron:

You say that the church to which you belong has never “bashed” other faiths.

“I was answered that I must join none of them (Christian churches), for they were all wrong…their creeds were an abomination in [God’s] sight; that those professors were all corrupt” (Joseph Smith—History 1:19).

“Orthodox Christian views of God are pagan rather than Christian” (Mormon Doctrine of Deity, B. H. Roberts [General Authority], 116).

“The Roman Catholic, Greek, and Protestant church, is the great corrupt, ecclesiastical power, represented by great Babylon” (Orson Pratt, Writings of an Apostle, Orson Pratt, n. 6, 84).

“All the priests who adhere to the sectarian [Christian] religions of the day with all their followers, without one exception, receive their portion with the devil and his angels” (The Elders Journal, Joseph Smith, ed. Vol. 1, n. 4, 60).

Just purchase any European history book. The pages are filled with bloody accounts of the Inquisition. Don’t tell me you think that the history books are fabricated!!!

%between%

Some suggest that the Catholic Church has distorted the bible…and continues to make claims that are false.

Find a video put out by the BBC (not exactly known for being pro-Catholic) called the Myth of the Spanish Inquisition. It actually debunks all the so-called bloody accounts as being German Protestant propaganda helped spread by the creation of the printing press. More horrible stories had to be created for the anti-Catholic/anti-Spanish shock value.

Remember, this is the National Review, a paper not exactly known for pro-Catholic bias.

Justin

Justin, thanks for this excellent link. As a middle school history teacher, I am always interested in more accurate understandings of historical events.

"In 1998 the Vatican opened the archives of the Holy Office (the modern successor to the Inquisition) to a team of 30 scholars from around the world. Now at last the scholars have made their report, an 800-page tome that was unveiled at a press conference in Rome on Tuesday. Its most startling conclusion is that the Inquisition was not so bad after all. Torture was rare and only about 1 percent of those brought before the Spanish Inquisition were actually executed. "

Rodofiron, I find it odd how you keep mentioning the Spanish Inquisition, but you fail to bring up unsavoury parts of mormon history.

You know like:

Blood Atonement, the Dannites, and last but not least

THE MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE:nope: :crying: :tsktsk:

Why would I speak of those when speaking about the Catholic church and its history? Also, those three things you mentioned were part of Brigham Young’s group. They had the Dannites, they believed in Blood Atonement, and they are responsible for the Mountain Meadows Massacre. But this all took place after Joseph Smith was dead and Brigham had led his group to Utah. I don’t belong to that church. I never have. So, your mention of these things are irrelevant.
