She says this phone call offering condolences restored her faith, after the death of her son made her say “I don’t believe in God any more. Why should He take my son?” Distraught, sobbing uncontrollably, she had called the Vatican. Saying these things during her call, she left her phone number, never believing anyone would ever call back. The message she just missed was recorded on her phone. She believes the voice she heard in the background was the Pope’s.

This Pope seems to be great by being small; calling many by speaking softly to the few. He reminds me of Mother Teresa. More a Franciscan than a Jesuit.Perhaps both, a great preacher as a Jesuit by loving the poor like a Franciscan. Perhaps, like St. Francis, he will rebuild a church in need. Perhaps like Loyola he will reach across the world. I feel we have been blessed with a man for our times. May he continue to offer his church to the glory of God.
