Hi all,

What’s the complete list of countries that approve either “Divine Office” or “Daily Prayer from the Divine Office”? I know there’s England and Wales, Australia, New Zealand, but what are the others? In particular, is it approved for the Philippines?

Its the universal prayer of the world, its valid everywhere, though small things would vary from country to country, Mabuhay! 👍

Thanks! However by “Divine Office” I mean the one published by Collins, which is not approved for liturgical use in the US. We in the Philippines use the US translation, but I would like to know if the Collins edition lists the Philippines as one of those permitted to use it also for liturgical use.

I’m in Australia and I use that version. It doesn’t however list the Philipines.

Hi Twiz,

Thanks. That’s all I need. Gotta stick with the US edition then.
in private prayer for lay persons, we are free to use any edition, which is a huge temptation since the psalms are translated so much better in the UK edition. For public recitation, and for use of those bound to pray the LOTH daily (clergy, consecrated religious) in the US and other countries where the US translation is used, that is the only option.

Are they? [post=1146886]This poster[/post] says the UK edition uses the The Grail (1963) psalms, which is the same as acknowledged on the copyright page of my CBP ICEL Christian Prayer?

I believe I have read that the Latin *Liturgia Horarum *is always and everywhere acceptable too.

I have the current 4 volume US set, and a UK set in 3 vols, Collins, 1974 the divine Office, no psalms source listed on copyright page, but acknowledgements in the back list all the sources for scripture. ICEL versions of canticles are also in the back of the book. the Grail psalter is cited, with explanatory notes about alterations to the texts. Scripture cites are Jerusalem bible 1966, RSV and TEV (with more explanatory notes on sources).

my one-vol Christian Prayer has psalms identical to the US 4 vol, Catholic Book Pub 1975. It cites most scripture from NAB, says it uses Grail psalter, but the differences between by UK and US edition are substantial, and noticable since I go back and forth quite a bit.

I have a 1-vol UK Daily Prayer, 1974, with the same acknowledgements page as the 3-vol set. citing Grail psalter, 1963, with appendix for ICEL canticles & ps 95.

Hi puzzleannie,

I think the US and UK editions use the same Grail translation for the psalms, but the Scripture readings are from the RSV.

Where can you get the UK edition of a Christian Prayer, 1 volume edition.

My understanding is this edition of the Divine Office is approved for use in Australia, England, Gambia, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Malaysia, Scotland, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Tanzania, Uganda, Wales, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

This is from page iv of The Divine Office, Volume 1, published 1974, by Collins (London, ISBN 005995019), E.J. Dwyer (Sydney ISBN 085574233x), and Talbot (Dublin ISBN 0854521135).

It has two lists of approval: “Approved by the Episcopal Conferences of Australia, England and Wales, Ireland, Scotland for use in the dioceses of these countries. Also approved for use in Gambia, …”.

Of course there may have been changes since 1974 which I am not aware of.

I wonder why the US doesn’t use the same Divine Office as England and Ireland. Seems bizzare to me!.

Is anyone interested in putting the Uk Divine Office online with me, I think it would be a good idea to get more people to pray it. Contact me for information
