“i’m ready to call it quits and go home with my son. my husband’s attitude hasn’t changed - just a reaction to my hysterical begging and pleading for him to work. i’m going out of my mind - literally. is it a sin to leave a marriage to save myself and my son from a husband who really doesn’t care about us - to give him a safe, healthy environment and home life?”

Take your son and go back to the US and get a legal separation. Get a real job in the US and take care of your child. If your husband wants to fix your relationship, it’s up to him at this point. It’s up to him to stop drinking, work, and earn money to come to the US. You’ve done everything you can. It’s his turn now.

Agreed. God placed that child in your care, he is your first responsibility. Your husband is an adult, he needs to be responsible for himself, so that he may perhaps learn to be responsible for his family.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. I would really appreciate some prayers for this situation to turn around. I’m so sad that this is working out this way. I can’t imagine why God is not stepping in, in a major way to save this marriage. I’ve always imagined having a healthy, loving marriage but this has been a total nightmare from the very begining. [sigh]. Please pray for this family. I really need this to turn around. I just don’t want to ruin my son’s life with his father not being around. Please pray…

I’m just wondering why God would send a little job for my husband (through my prayers) rather than one that would ease the financial burden a bit and temporarily give me relief that would let me see the trees from the forest? I’m so confused.

I have followed your sad story from the beginning, and I agree that the only thing left for you to do is return to the United States where you can get a job and properly care for your children. However, you must be very careful when you do this. I do not know all of the details of your situation so I would suggest that you seek the advice of an attorney before you leave. I have heard of women in similar situations to you who have been charged with child abduction under The Hague Convention rules. Please be careful.

Marysann’s advice is good. Get legal advice, then take steps to return, and get in a position to care for your son.
It can be done. With some assistance, I was able to get training for a job that allows me to support my 2 children and disabled husband. You will probably qualify for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, which has as a goal helping people find employment. It’s much easier to manage in the US than in other countries, I imagine.
Your husband will find his own way. God does not always answer our prayers as we hope, or as soon as we wish. But we know he is looking out for us.
God bless.
