I think many of us have been guilty of uncharitable behavior. I apologize for mine and will try to do better.

Actually when I was describing atheists I was describing more than one atheist I know personally. I don’t know you personally, it was not directed at you personally, and any objective reading of my post would confirm that. If you took the description to apply to you, if you took it as some sort of personal attack, then you own that, it belongs to you, it has nothing to do with me. Does the shoe fit? If so, that’s your problem.

Be speaking of “charity” ~

“All Catholics can do is vilify and spew filth toward anyone who doesn’t believe as they do” is extremely offensive.

Personal attacks are offensive as well as being against forum rules. They are also proof that there is no substance to the perpetrator’s argument, which is why someone resorts to personal attacks in the first place.

Forum members ~ sometimes the “ignore” feature can be your best friend. 🙂

Uh huh…that’s why “LaMar” was in the first paragraph. You know someone personally? LOLOLOL! It’s like your fellow Catholics who spew looney antisemitism, but claim that they have “a Jewish best friend” in the next paragraph.

If I wanted to ignore you, I would do so. You’re simply cheap entertainment at this point and I don’t take anything you say too seriously, so feel free to squeal and squawk for the next 6 weeks, and I’ll continue chuckling.

The “ignore feature” recommendation wasn’t for you. 🙂

As for the rest of your attack, the evidence is plain and speaks for itself.

LaMar, I just want to give you a heads up to be careful. Referring to Catholicism as “a cult” borders on the type of disrespectful dialogue that you agreed not to engage in when you signed up.

“7. Non-Catholics are welcome to participate but must be respectful of the faith of the Catholics participating on the board.”

There are plenty of other online forums where you can vent your frustrations against individual Catholics by attacking their faith as “a cult”, but this isn’t one of them.

Really? So it’s O.K. for Catholics to post anti-semitic screeds here, bash other religions, and insult people, but you’ll start boo-hooing when you get a little bit back.

That’s the very definition of a cult. If the shoe fits, as somebody said…

I was trying to be helpful. But apparently you are not interested in decent conversation, just childish “gotcha back” games. If you feel that someone’s post is offensive or over the line against another group, you are free to click the report button on that post. If you don’t want to follow the rules, well, you’re on your own. Good luck. 🤷

To activate the “ignore” feature for a particular poster, follow these steps:
  1. Copy the name of the poster ~ either on paper or using the copy feature on your computer keyboard
  2. Click on “profile” on the top navigation bar
  3. On the profile page, scroll down to “miscellaneous” on the left navigation bar and click on “buddy/ignore” lists
  4. Paste or type the name of the poster who you want to ignore (i.e., their posts will not be displayed for you) in the ignore list box. This is the box closer to the bottom of the screen.
  5. Click “save list”

Melanie Anne has written a great tutorial about putting me on ignore. Feel free to follow her sage advice with my best wishes. 👍

Eden, you’re completely correct of course. While it’s true that the internet is full of blogs that allow all manner of intemperate postings, this doesn’t happen to be one of them. The “gotcha” games are childish, just as you say, and often display a certain deficit more than anything else.

This is why I recommend the use of the ignore feature. If enough people use it, the problem often will resolve itself in due course. 🙂

Hello LaMar, in regards to bashing the very foundation of some religions is a ‘bash’. No disrerspect intended but your first post on this thread was a bash and offered nothing to the topic. It was plain to me you had your own topic to promote. I could spell it out but I’m really interested in how folks faithfull to a system of beliefs respond evidence with a high degree of certainty that directly contradicts the reality that system constructs. Please know that you otherwise seem to be a decent and personable person.

Eden, you’re completely correct of course.
So far, here are the “decent” conversations that Catholics have started on this forum:

“The Dalai Lama is the most evil man in the world”
“Mormonism is a cult”
“Jews kidnap and murder Catholic babies to use their blood for passover”
“Muhammad was inspired by Satan or other demon”
“The Episcopal Church was started by Satan to spread homosexuality”

Of course you’re both correct, I’m not interested in any of these “decent” (LOL!) conversations, except to scoff at them. No sane or sensible person is. The people who post here have some of the craziest ideas that I have ever come across, and I grew up a Mormon. What does that tell you?

Go ahead and put me on ignore. What are you waiting for? I care not.

I wish I could provide some insights into why Mormons believe some of the silly things they hold on to. No offense to my fellow Mormons out there who do believe these things. Like you, I’m interested in the underlying motivations, and after 20 years of pondering the reasons they hold on to these stories as literal, historical events, I’m no closer to understanding the phenomenon.

Best,

LaMar

If you are upset about some of the topics being discussed in the Non-Catholic Religions forum, there are plenty of other forum categories available for you to discuss that you probably won’t find as upsetting.

Well, Mormon’s have a fairly intense persecution experience that bonds them and whether justified or not a religious community aspiring to the early church could easily define that experience as one with the original community. They could even experience deep insights that they could never have known otherwise.

Would you think this DNA evidence should have a profound effect on Mormon’s?

Hey Eden,

I’m not upset at all. I find it simultaneously entertaining and disheartening.

I speak up against bigotry wherever I find it. I originally came here when my fellow Mormons were bending over backwards trying to justify their anti-Catholic hate crime in the rural southwest. I didn’t cut them any slack either.

Thanks for the links, by the way. You’re right that most of the other forums here have a much deeper (or at least different) value compared to this one.

Mormons who actually are practicing members of the LDS church that post to this thread have indicated that the DNA evidence being discussed here has no effect on their faith.

At least one poster stated that God had changed the DNA of the people discussed in the Book of Mormon, which explains why there is no DNA evidence remaining of their existence. But this claim was not referenced back to any authoritative doctrine.

That’s a good point. I think a lot of the bizarre behavior you find in Utah is due to that huddle mentality.

Belief in the Book of Mormon doesn’t really fit that profile though. A lot of people believe in things (religious and not) that don’t have any basis in science or history and most of the devotees of similar ideas haven’t been through the westward migration.

Gawd knows I can’t explain it.

I think that’s a good indicator of those who worship in ‘Spirit and Truth’ and who don’t. It seems to me that any intellectually honest person would have to admit that the evidence requires them to ponder and the church it’self to some kind of reconciliation of the evidence and their faith. I would require my Church to search sincerely for depth not yet plumbed concerning the faith and a sincere effort at understanding the science involved.

Standing up against bigotry does not mean becoming belligerent and offensive yourself. If that is your witness to the superiority of the LDS (secular) life, then you have failed to convince me that your way is correct.
