I have read that animals can not sin, and I agree, but I’m just wondering what is the explanation for this?

thank you 🙂

My dog ate my rosary once. I fell asleep praying it, and when I woke up it was all over the place. Animals don’t sin, but my dog will have to spend some time in purgatory for this one.

Like 1ke already said, animals do not have souls so they can not sin as humans can.
Everything living has a soul, that is a source of life, but except for humans, those souls are gone when life is ended.

Greetings Waiting,

This is not what the Church teaches. Is what you have proposed your personal belief? IF it is not, where are you getting this belief?

God Bless.

Animals have material souls and not immortal souls. When animals die, they cease to exist.

I’m pretty sure the previous poster is right. All living beings have souls it’s just that only human beings have immortal souls. The souls of animals and plants die when their physical being dies

Greetings Kmuestwin,

I must be really tired. I was not thinking when I responded to Waiting’s post. Perhaps I should just have given Waiting the benefit of the doubt before responding as I did.

Greetings Waiting,

My sincerest apologies.

God Bless.

No.

For example mortal sin is committed when 3 conditions are met:

Sin is a sin of grave matter
It is committed with full knowledge of the sinner
Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner

Animals have a soul, however they are not aware of these 3 conditions. Animals act on instinct.
Only human souls go to heaven or hell because we have knowledge of our creator (God) and have the capacity to love Him. Animals just don’t even know what being alive is, they don’t even know that they will die.

We are the ones made in God’s image and likeness (intellect, free will). Animals are cool creatures but only earthly beings where we are both earthly (physical) and spiritual.

Please read more carefully. I said animals do not have spiritual souls.

They have material souls.

Locomotive souls in the Aristotelian-Aquinas sense 😛

Can animals sin? Well… what is sin? An offense to God. What do animals do? What’s innate to their nature created by God. Ergo, they cannot sin for they only act on what they’re naturally inclined to do, and yes that doe also mean killing humans for those rare cases. Do they go to heaven because they have no sin? No, they stop existing as a soul after bodily death. They were created for us on earth, not heaven.

Animals cannot sin because they have no free will.

St Thomas Aquinas said that animals do not have immortal souls.Others have posted that when animals die, that is it. I will leave it to God to decide about what happens to the animals he created and loves too.

The Church teaching is that only humans have immortal souls. By definition that means no other creatures have immortal souls, i.e. when an animal dies their souls cease to exist.
