Do Catholic priests have the authority to forgive sins on earth?

No bibilical basis? Does the name Jesus ring a bell?
Yes ,understand biblical basis as coming from Jesus per your interpretation ,Just do not see it acted out thereafter in the bible (Acts ,epistles etc),apart form gospel preaching/baptism or personal forgiveness.

Not according to my God.

“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?” Mark 2:7

“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” - Mark 2:10

The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this {man} who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” - Luke 5:21
Oh, the irony of quoting the Pharisees to support your paradigm–They are saying–that Jesus is a blasphemer! As if there was any truth at all to their statement.

You said it not me, I made no claim, but spoke of only one based on posts. I’ll leave that to the Barna Group (under the subtitle "Religious Differences Examined", then review the second paragraph for a summary").

I have not met or interviewed every Catholic or know what their view or knowledge of Scripture is based on what they have said or written; have you?

I am more interested in my personal study and that of my family. I will say if that study is accurate, then a lot of mortal sin is being committed regularly and the priests have a need to see many folks to forgive and absolve a multitude of mortal & other sins; but that is between the laity and the priests and has nothing to do with me. But every Christian denomination has similar issues; it is just a matter of degree. Not surprising given the words of Jesus and the fact that only a few are being saved in comparison to the many who claim Lord Lord. Proves to me the veracity of Scripture and not many fear God.

Excuse me; you are making strong accusations without any valid reason and are flat out wrong and insulting as well. This is a ploy to get me kicked out isn’t it? That is why you came to this thread isn’t it? Tell me the truth. 😦

[bibledrb]Matthew 9:8[/bibledrb]

To MEN, plural—not only Jesus but those who exercise His authority by the Holy Spirit.

[bibledrb]John 20:22-23[/bibledrb]

Like Paul.

[bibledrb]2 Corinthians 2:10[/bibledrb]

And the elders of the Church.

[bibledrb]James 5:14-16[/bibledrb]

So, when are you going to answer my question and tell us how peoples’ sins are forgiven?
I like the commentaries.

I believe this is forgiveness for a personal slight (sin)against Paul and his ministry , not as personal Confessor.Otherwise a great scripture that almost fits your dogma.
Amen; I am thankful to God that you are able to make a distinction between a man forgiving another man for a wrongdoing and God forgiving a man for sin against God. 👍

I don’t see what that survey has to do with the veracity of Scripture. Also, the survey is asking Catholics whether they keep Protestant mainstays like Sunday school and private Bible reading (as opposed to public proclamation of the Bible such as is done daily, not just Sundays, at every Mass).

One is done in one’s own person; the other is done in the person of Christ, who alone can forgive sins. There would have been no need for Paul to make that distinction if he was just accepting an apology.

This is a false dichotomy. If someone commits a serious sin, such as, say, stealing from one’s boss, it is against *both *man and God. One ought to ask forgiveness from both.

Like most Catholic answers, it’s not either/or but both/and.

Absolutely.
But every Christian denomination has similar issues
This is a fair and truthful statement.

Kind of like when I was being convicted by the Holy Spirit, like a sledgehammer , that I was in peril of eternal hellfire and I did not know Jesus , nor could confess Him as my Savior and Lord honestly,
By going to a priest you were doing that very thing. You went to the priest because he is a priest. A priest of who? Jesus Christ.

Are you sure that was the Holy Spirit? How do you know? The discernment of spirits, telling between them, is NOT a universal gift (1 Cor 11).
and my Jesuit priest says, “Oh no! I do not think our loving Father would do that to you (or that you are in that danger ).”
Our Loving Father would not have done that to you. The Father, being perfect Love, does not deal in fear. The enemy does, as do those who deal in false gospels and assurances.
I needed to be born again ,and he was not allowed to say that cause I was already baptized and confirmed . What an assumption ,that every catholic is O.K. cause they did the sacraments.
You really need to read the Bible.

[BIBLEDRB]Acts 2:37-38 [/BIBLEDRB]
[BIBLEDRB]Acts 22:16[/BIBLEDRB]
[BIBLEDRB]1 Cor 6:11[/BIBLEDRB]
[BIBLEDRB]Rom 6:4[/BIBLEDRB]
Does not that apply to any Catholic -Lord Lord let us in -Depart from me I never knew you ?
Your citation shows me that you know nothing about the original context of those words of the Lord. They had nothing to do with having a particular “faith” or a “born again” experience. They had to do with WORKS.

[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 25:41-46[/BIBLEDRB]

Again, you really, really need to read the Bible.

Yeah David - get with the Bible reading…LOL 😉

I am making an observation that his material appears to be lifted from some generic Fundamentalist anti-Catholic tract and not the Bible as the Scripture is discussing the importance of works, not faith. (Not to say that faith is not also important; that is not the point Jesus was making at the time.)

Be happy Jharek,at least she did not blue highlight “blasphemer” in her scripture quote.WE don’t want to be like Canadian law, where just the scriptural reference depicting negative lifestyles is illegal. But indeed ,all things in charity ,even hard truth.

Isn’t a Protestant anti-Catholic by Catholic definition? i understand where David is coming from and David knows Scripture very well and in proper context. I do not know him personally, but I would give my life for him and love him more than most of my family because what binds us together no man can pull apart. :yup:

Not at all.

“However, one cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers … All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church.” CCC 818

Concerning the Salvation of Non-Catholics

orginally published in 1891

This is interesting and speaks of the comparison between the ability of a Catholic priest ot forgive sins and the fact that a Protestant minister cannot, which a true protestant minister, the thought would never enter his mind in the first place.

According to this; David, MD and myself are damned (not saved) because we are here and have seen what all of you have written (exposed to Catholic precepts) and none of us believe that Scripture teaches that the Catholic church is the true church because we are not Catholic. So unless we convert to Catholicism, we are damned. Interesting. We certainly could not be called Christians according to this because by nature a Christian is one who is saved, being saved and will be saved and we are disqualified according to this. Unless the Catholic tradition has changed since 1891.
