1 Timothy 4
1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

do you understand my point now, kind sir

We **understand your point **but you **misunderstood disciplinary practices **of the Catholic Christianity.

So you presume the Catholic Church forbids marry, and abstaining meats?

No. If it was truly forbidden, then there would be no Catholic priests who are married either in the Latin Rite (Roman) and Byzantine Rite. There are also Lutheran and Anglican pastors who converted to Catholicism, and had Papal approval to be ordained as priests. This however, is not about forbidden marriaged.

The Catholic Church also elevate marriage itself as a Sacrament, Holy and she protects the dignity of marriage but not allowing divorce, which the Lord Jesus Christ forbids. I won’t discuss this point further.

The thread is about fasting. The Church that requires fasting is for the spiritual benefit to the Christian faithful.

Had you not taken the time to read our posts, don’t presume you know better than our own Catholic faith, which you apparently do not know.

If indeed fasting was not allowed, then why do we see the Apostles themselves fast? Would** not Paul contradict himself**, for he himself have fasted.

and you kind sir call our faith the **“doctrines of the devil.” **How truly, I am offended.

Fasting on Friday by the way is not a doctrine. It’s a discipline.

Okay, so you’re not saying that that the Catholic practice of not eating meats on Friday and fasting during Lent are signs of “sign of seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.” That’s good. I thought for a minute that you were insulting our faith.

no i never say that it wasn’t a good thing to, only that it shouldn’t be commanded (as a part of salvation)

Never said Fasting wasn’t allowed, I said it wasn’t commanded.

and please Don’t be offended by me, Paul said that. So i’m sure that if all of your priest decided to get married that would not be a problem.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Pace yourself. You just arrived. There is plenty of time to rectify your false understanding of priestly celibacy on another thread. Let’s stick to fasting/abstaining from meat on this one. 🙂

Catholics are asked not to eat meat on Fridays during Lent as a form of penance. Outside of Lent, Catholics are asked to perform some form of penance, but it can be anything. (For example, I gave up tea yesterday.)

where is lent in the bible? Is Lent a matter of salvation, ash wed, mardigras, fat tuesday. Is that doctrine of the new testament church? yea or nay

Maybe you should start a thread on that. It is a bigger question than the question of eating meat on Friday. I sent you a PM regarding how to start a thread. It can be found by clicking on “Messages” in the upper right hand corner under your sign-on name and “last visit:”

where is lent in the bible?
The word lent is not found in the Bible. Lent is the Liturgical reason when the Christian faithful (Catholics) prepare for Easter.

During the Lenten season, Catholics will either fast, abstain from material things, pray the Station of the Cross.

On Easter we comemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lent is disciplinary which strengthen the faith to God. It’s similar Holy days found in Judaism when they prepare for the Passover. Ash Wednesday is a reminder that we are “dust, and from dust we shall return.”

Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras is living out the final festivities. Mardi Gras is practiced in varies parts of the world.

and No it is NOT a doctrine.

Here is a background of Lent.
The forty-day period is symbolic of the 40 days spent by Jesus in the desert. The number forty has many other Biblical significances: the forty days Moses spent on Mount Sinai with God; the forty days and nights Elijah spent walking to Mount Horeb; God makes it rain for forty days and forty nights in the story of Noah; the Hebrew people wandered forty years traveling to the Promised Land; Jonah in his prophecy of judgment gave the city of Nineveh forty days grace in which to repent.
Jesus retreated into the desert, where he fasted for forty days, and was tempted by the devil. Jesus overcame all of the temptations of the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life by citing scripture to the devil, at which point the devil left him, angels ministered to Jesus, and he began his ministry.
The Lenten period of forty days owes its origin to the Latin word quadragesima, referring to the forty hours of total fast that preceded the Easter celebration in the early Church.[4] The main ceremony was the baptism of the initiates on Easter Eve. The fast was in preparation to receive this sacrament. Later, the period from Good Friday until Easter Day was extended to six days, to correspond with the six weeks of training, necessary to instruct the converts who were to be baptized.
Converts to Christianity followed a strict instruction schedule. In Jerusalem near the close of the fourth century, classes were held throughout seven weeks of Lent for three hours each day. With the imposition of Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire, its character was endangered by the great influx of new members. In response, the Lenten fast and practices of self-renunciation were required of all Christians. The less zealous of the converts were thus brought more securely into the Christian fold.
Traditionally, On Easter Sunday, Catholics may cease their fasting and start again whatever they gave up for lent, after they attend Sunday mass.

no way you kidding

Still no command

wow still nothing

I thought you would have more than that. all you have is jesus fasting in the desert. Did he tell you to do it every year. Jesus got beat and whipped too by the way.

The only reason you have lent is because Jesus fasted. Wow i have been educated. please allow me a moment to meditate on this revelation.

I honestly thought there was more to it

I am a man myself discerning the priesthood. I decided out of my own free will to live a celibate life. Celibacy in the priesthood is a choice. Since I am single now, I am living the life of celibacy as well.

No one is force by it. I have meet several young men ages 20 and over, who said it is a choice they had to make. Since this is not the discussion of this thread. I won’t go here much further either.

I will be happy to comment on this further, when you start a thread.

How do you get from there, to asking people to have the occasional meatless meal, is my question?
It seems like a mighty big stretch to me…as I sit here eating my 😛 shrimp/lobster/crabmeat combo from the Chinese restaurant.
lol how do you start a thread anyway

Jesus established a Church, and this Church has authority. In the Bible, the faithful Christians are to respect the Elders of the Church who oversees the flock.

When Church requires one to fast we do so. Not because it’s for show. Rather, fasting is bringing oneself closer to God. Again, Church authority at itself is another topic of discussion, so we won’t go there.

Likewise, early Christians were eaten by lions and burn at the stake. They imitated Christ in every way.

Let me quote the Catechism again, if you have not read it already.

Fasting is what we called as Precepts of the Church. It is listed as the fourth Precept

2041 The** precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life**. The obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor:

2043 The fourth precept (“You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church”) **ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts **and help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.

In summary, fasting helps us to be masters of our own free will by avoiding material goods that aren’t helpful to our soul. Fasting brings us closer to God, by imitating him. Jesus Christ fasted, the Apostles fasted, and their successors fasted.

Fasting for show like have others look at you “look he is fasting. He must be a devote Christian.” Yet in his heart, he merely want to appease the public. Rather, a Christian should fast and not look glooming or starved. He appears healthy. Don’t let everyone know you are fasting. You fast in private. God, Our Father will reward you in the end.
