Papal tierra is no longer worn. Mitre is part of the traditions, and I believe it had its origins with the Jews because they wear one too. I don’t think it is a violation.

Some devout Catholic women do, but wearing headwear is no longer required.

Second, what Paul said is what he recommends. It’s not binding since it doesn’t deal with moral or faith issue.

What is the name of the first church father to say that the Bible must only be followed when it relates to moral or faith issues?
Where in the Bible does it say that?
Why would you not want to follow what the Bible teaches?
How do you decide what is a moral or faith issue?

Men don’t wear hats in the Catholic Church. Even priests and Bishops, including the Pope, remove their head coverings during the prayers.

If it’s up to me to judge, I would say, it makes no difference either way. St. Paul was expressing a personal opinion; not setting down a law, here. “Is it comely?” Surely that’s a matter of personal taste. As the old Indian chief said, if we all had the same standards of beauty, everyone would want to marry my wife, and the other poor girls would be left without husbands.

Nature itself doesn’t teach me any such thing. I find men with long hair to be very attractive, in fact. 🙂

How do you know what is Paul’s opinion and what is not?

You have selected a few quotes from the bible and then asked if Catholics practiced in accordance with the bible. It might help you to know that Catholics do not read the bible in that manner - and with good reason.

The bible is intented to be read as a whole. As Catholics we do not take certain verses and then ask if they apply. We read the whole bible and then apply the message of the bible as a whole. For to read it by taking and applying certain verses you will find many contradictions. We put emphasis on the teachings of Christ.

Remember when asked what the greatest commandment of all Jesus told us to love God with our whole heart and our whole mind. And the second to love our neighbor as ourselves. I think this would definitely over ride whether or not we wore a hat or not or whether we cut our hair or not. Jesus never said we had to cover our heads or not to pray and love him. Seems to be clearly Paul’s opinion.

It doesn’t.

1Cr 11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having [his] head covered, dishonoureth his head.

The mitre isn’t worn when those things (praying or prophesying) are taking place. Its taken off. Its no dishonor to wear a hat and we will all recieve a crown in heaven. :tiphat:

The point of Paul here is that the Corinthians, as per their custom, have their heads veiled in prayer. Verse 16 should give a clue, in that he says that “we do not have such a custom, nor the churches of God”, implying that such a custom is only among the Corinthians. Further reading would indicate that the wearing or not wearing of a head covering seems to be creating discord among them (verses 17-19).

Well since the Church possesses the Vail of Veronica and the burial Shroud of Turin as well as being descendant from the apostolic age and culture where its known the Jews wore their hair longer I suppose it would be more than just an educated guess.

Jews did not wear their hear long in the first century.
I do not think most people feel the Shroud is legit.
