Do Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses have an easier time converting Catholics than Evangelicals when they come to our homes?

That’s another Sunstone! Sunstone is the name of a magazine for Mormon intellectuals, so I’m sure it gets used as a screen name now and then.

I do, though, edit articles for an academic religion journal and have published articles on Mormonism (which doesn’t make me a world authority or anything).
So why Mormonism and not Catholicism or Calvinism?

Let’s think on the positive side:
Would it be easier to convert Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses to Catholicism when they come to our homes or would it be easier to convert evangelicals?

Catholics and Evangelicals are always moving back and forth between our respective communities. We are siblings in Christ. The Magestrium does consider Mormons and JWs to be your siblings in Christ.

I’m…complicated. You know, one of those academics who continues to value his spiritual life, even as he questions it. I also have deep family connections in Mormonism–all of my immediate family are active LDS, and I have many Mormon pioneer ancestors.

“Family of sinners saved by God for His own glory”

Help me out here, 2ndAdam, I’m slow. Does “Family…glory” refer to a denomination?

No, family means all those united to Christ by the Spirit which consist of the elect of God in all branches all Christianity (Catholic, Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox).

Ah… interesting that God places us in different backgrounds…

I’d like to invite Mormon missionaries and Jehovah Witnesses over at the same time to have a round table experience. 😃

What? I’d like to see you offer a little support on this one.

No, apparently they do not, since there are over a billion Catholics in the world. Or about 1/6 of the world’s current population.

So neither do Evangelicals nor Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons have made any big dent on converting the Catholics.

Not to my knowledge. But they rely on one’s ignorance of Scripture and the Word in order to convert them.

If you read the Catholic Catechism, Protestants are called separated brethrens. Do you not receive Catholics as your siblings in Christ?

Can you show me the context in the Catechism where the term “separated brethren” is used to exclude Mormons or JWs?

As someone who was a Mormon missionary, I’ll share a few observations:
  1. Evangelicals have plenty in their fold who don’t know the Bible from beans. Sometimes I think its an Evangelical/Protestant strategy to convince Catholics that they are less knowledgeable about the Bible.
I wish I could argue with you on this point but I can’t.

I have invited, through active members I work with, Mormons to come to my house for “bible talk” and I have yet to succeed in this venture. For some reason they won’t come to my house. If they are afraid to come into the dungeon, we can sit on the front porch swing…lol

JW’s come by every once in a while. I have been living in my neighborhood for about 5 years and the first time they ventured to my front door, while I was there, I invited them in and to sit, while I went to my office and got my bible, CCC, and code of canon Law.

Not quite sure but I think I intimidated them. Seems all they wanted to talk about was the one book I didn’t know much about, the Catholic Encyclopedia. Seems this book proves that we are a pagan religion…🤷

Anyway, we had some very good discussions and they have come looking for me on a regular basis. To be honest I really enjoy talking with them. I think the reason is they are, at least the people who have come to my door, passionate about their faith. I think this fact and the fact that the majority of the population regardless of denomination affiliation is passionate about their life, and luke warm about their faith. This translates into a lack of knowledge of scripture or tradition.

I’m not Catholic, so that is my interpertation of the Catholic Catechism. What about it Catholic siblings in Christ, are Mormons your Christian siblings in Christ according to the Magestrium?

Don’t stir that attempt at getting hatred going.

What you want us to say is that since the Catholic Church does not accept Mormon baptism, Mormons are unworthy of Christian compassion and charity and are damned to hell. We will not do so.

Here it is one more time. The Catholic Church does not see Mormonism as Christianity as we do Protestants or the Orthodox. That does not mean that Mormons are second class citizens or that we should mistreat them in any way. All that it means is that we see a problem in Mormon theology that causes it to be defective.

And you know what? I think that Mormons would say it the same way about us.

None of that means that we think less or Mormons.

No, I never implied that. Simply, do you see Mormons to be the mission field in need to repent from the Mormon gospel and embrace the historic orthodox Jesus to be saved?

No Other Gospel

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. - Paul

You are being being disingenuous. You are not asking that because you want to know if Catholics see Mormons as needing to know the Truth of Jesus Christ. We do. Everyone does, including those poor souls who accept the lies of Protestantism.

You are asking that because you want a wedge to appear between us, sowing discord.

Zerinus and I do not agree on theology. We are always cordial and charitable to each other. I will not let a johnny-come-lately change that.

Exactly, it’s the opposite. I have had many friends and works associates who are of the Mormon religion. I believe they need to repent of their false gospel and embrace the orthodox historic Jesus Christ that we share. I don’t think you believe the Mormon gospel is damnable. I speak this way in regards to the Mormon hope, because I love those who happen to be Mormon. If you don’t see yourself to have a wedge between Mormons and yourself, then you may not understand the body of Christ, or the divison between old humanity and new humanity.
