Hey Catholic brothers and sisters, is that a true statement in regards to Peter?
Absolutely not! The Hollywood media has misunderstood the bible verses they had heard wherein Jesus gives Peter “the keys to the kingdom of heaven”. They thought it was physical keys to some actual gates at the entrance to heaven. It is something that a 5 year-old might think. When my sister was 5 years old she was sure God’s name was Harold. You know, “Our Father, who art in heaven, Harold be thy name.” 🙂

So now we see movies and TV shows (including a great Twilight Zone episode) where St. Peter is at the gates of heaven, letting people in.

But it was never a Catholic teaching.

Hey, Paul…I’ve seen that reference from considerably before Hollywood got it. I wonder, where did it come from? (terminal curiousity going here…)

…and no, I’m not about to insist that it is Catholic doctrine or teaching. I’m serious. I wonder where the idea came from?

…just my flighty mind following another avenue of curiousity. If you know, would you let me know? I’m going to go do some research…
