we Men have been depicted by the media for years as pretty stupid morons or mean ole bullies and drunks! Check out the Classic movie show channels…read the description of the flick…from the 1930s onward and downward men, daddys, hubbies etc are usually shown as just a bunch of no-goods.a sit-com like Father knows best…is long gone…even the title is shocking isnt it???Check out the ads…the fathers or husbands are usually fat and stupid, the wives condescending and the kids full of wisdom, this is no accident…as a teacher of advertising I can assure you of this agenda…and so many women are confused as to just what to expect from their guy. As a long time married man who sired seven children and who now has 11 grandchildren…one a lovely angel adopted from Colombia…marriage is all compromise, maturity and having a great sense of humor! I was the only lay teacher to not strike years ago in our large diocesan high school, went thru hard times for a month and a half…slashed tires, rocks thru home windows, obscene calls to our children…no help from the left wing clergy and principal…but my wife and I stayed close and weathered the storm…storms make oaks take deeper roots!!!

Boy, did you hit that nail square on the head.

I can’t stand those portrayals of the ‘modern’ family. No wonder we’re sinking into quicksand.

What exactly is the agenda?

I agree…there was a time when women were protrayed as ditzy, like Lucille Ball, but it was seen as clean humor. But, today, it seems that the portrayal is men being stupid, lazy, oversexed, and not being as wise as the women in the family. I even notice it on commercials. Like the way the wife talks to the husband…and the husband shrinks down like he is a dog that’s being yelled at. It’s so sad, to me. I wonder why the shift?

I think that abortion and radical feminism are to blame.

Lucille Ball was in charge of her show and Ray Romano crafted his. Comedians put themselves down more than they put others down, because it’s funnier and more charming. The kids-smarter-and-wiser-than-parents routine was really a 70’s theme, from the days when parents wanted to reassure themselves the kids were OK on their own all day (they weren’t, for the record). Comedy isn’t part of a plot, it barely HAS a plot. It’s a performing art that tries to aim for the middle ground between the familiar and the surprising and time the punchlines to fit a pattern. Both men and women come out ridiculous in sitcoms – no one is spared. The old sitcoms were the same way. The silly women aren’t as endangered anymore and the ridiculous men aren’t as dominant but that’s because women don’t want to be rescued by dominant men anymore. The average woman’s desire to be saved from running her own life wanes when other ways of living a long life become available. It’s kind of like the way the average man’s desire to go to sea and work 20-hour-days under a whip diminishes as he gains other ways of preparing for retirement.

Hi strngrnrth;🙂

What exactly do you mean by an average woman’s desire to be saved from running her own life?

Thank you for that enlightening and substantive contribution to the discussion, dakotagirl.

Many of us have stated that we have good men and do in fact appreciate them.

Care to expound on your point a little more?

Please bare with my responce, 🙂

I haven’t read all the responces but from my limited understanding I’ve seen alot of the ‘nice guys’ pine for the girls that want ‘other guys.’
The whole time the girls will say “I just want to be friends” and the ‘nice guy’ will agree. But in actuality they are lying because the ‘nice guys’ don’t want to just be friends, they want more.
Then the ‘nice guys’ will come to resent and silently fume over all the mistakes and imperfections of the ‘other guys’ that the girl is interested in.
know what I mean?
Sometimes the ‘nice guy’ can only see himself in the nice guy role and fails to see that he’s lying to the girl when he tells her “Yeah, of course I just want to be friends.”
Sometimes the ‘nice guy’ thinks that he’s the good one because most of his actions are passive-aggressive instead of forthright.

I also think it’s really hard to catagorize people into
‘nice guy’ and ‘bad guy’. Obviously both kind of guys make mistakes and can act selfishly, but we should take each guy on a case by case basis and not paint them all with one broad stroke.

Having said that, I’m engaged to a good guy. He doesn’t go around patting himself on the back about how he’s so nice, good, or genuine.
He also has a history of not being attracted to the girls that like drama, and malfunction in their relationships. (I don’t know how I slipped in under his radar lol 😃 )

Many women will claim that they want men to respect them for who they are, and treat them with respect and dignity. Why is it, though, that whenever push comes to shove, and they actually meet a man who treats them well, they find him boring, or they take all their vengeance on the male species out on him, suspecting he’ll put up with it, thinking he’s a push-over? Why are they afraid to get close to him, emotionally speaking? Why do women CREATE unnecessary conflict in such relationships? Why are they more drawn to men who will emotionally and/or physically abuse them? Do they feel safer in a relationship where they are being used rather than loved, since it is less effort to get a man to use them than to love them? Are women that influenced by the media, or is there more to this that I am not seeing?

If you are an exception to this, please don’t take offense. Rather understand, though, that at least from my perspective, you seem to be an exception, not the norm.

Also, how much(and what) can a man put up with, before he truly should be considered a push-over? We want to be nice and kind and forgive her 70 x 7 times, but at what point do we need to dump her?
**Truly Good Women **TRULY appreciate **truly good men **- 😃

Peace
James

An interesting question. Would we be better off with arranged marriages, AND arranged careers? Do we have too much freedom without enough knowledge? I think we do, in terms of making it in this world. With people constantly changing careers, and constantly changing spouses, it seems like we don’t know what is best for us anymore, in terms of free choices that don’t constitute sin. I feel like such an underachiever, a talent burier, but I don’t know what to do, or how to use my talents. I am Heavenly minded, but I’m clueless as to how to accomplish things in this world.
You can change carreers if you change your mind. You can’t morally change spouses.

I wonder if they think women control most of the families disposable income and are trying to appeal to women to sell more advertising.

Hi strngrnrth;🙂

What exactly do you mean by an average woman’s desire to be saved from running her own life?
Something I notice in old sitcoms and other stories is the single woman or, in Lucy’s case, married woman with too much time on her hands, who makes mistakes and panics and is guided by some stern man and is actually relieved he is there to keep her from doing anything risky. Today’s relative prosperity makes it possible to live alone (:extrahappy: ), and we found soon enough we could learn to evaluate financial risks and survive a few bad decisions, and we had the wiggle room it took to learn to do a good job of running our own lives. We had to do so while doing everything else too, and became clever and quick. We learned how to keep many things in mind at once. Now we get impatient with men, some of whom haven’t kept up.

I adore my husband and my grown son.I am constantly bombarded by this media brainwashing process that has become more noticable and offensive in the last few years.I write or e-mail my disapproval to the various advertisers.I teach kids in my family and friends every opportunity a “commercial” provides, about the bias and the demographic “they” are catering to.It has become a sort of fun game for us and encourages critical thinking skills that certain advertisers don’t want certain consumers to develop. Please don’t give up on the female of the species. We are not all brain dead, and unfortunately the portrayal of women in this mean power position is a hype they’d like us to believe about ourselves and perpetuates exploiting “mean” women because they’re “mean”,and then your not far from “all” women being “mean”,and undeserving of even basic moral respect.I find it as disturbing the trend in that the kids are smart and the "parents"are dumb,.I wonder if I can invent a board game without getting sued.Keepin the faith…

Eh, I read more of the thread. It looks like the topic is more narrow in scope than I originally thought.

We are in a world of the imperfect/fallen nature. Pray to God to help you find your vocation (Marriage/Religious/Single) and then walk with God.
Marriage is for those that want to live out the Sacrament and help their spouse reach Heaven. Yes, even the spouse that sins, is incorrect sometimes, and might even be a little ignorant on some things…kind of like *ourselves. :o *

There is no way to browbeat or force someone else to believe the same as you because belief has a little to do with they Holy Spirit and the person’s reception of it. So us humans have only a little to do with ‘correcting’ or ‘teaching’ others, the rest has to do with God.

If a woman or man is attracted to the ‘wrong’ kind of person, then that doesn’t automatically make them heartless, selfish, evil, etc… it just means that they don’t have it all figured out yet. Alot of it has to do with low self-esteem and maturity levels.

I still maintain that alot of the self-proclaimed ‘good guys’ are just as fallen as the ‘other guys’ they might not cheat or blatently lie, but they sin too, you know? Also if they burn with resentment about being passed up, overlooked, not recognized as being the right one…, then they really aren’t doing anyone any favors and end up being the ‘bad’ sort of guy with emotional baggage that girls should try to avoid. (what I mean by that, is if I had a daughter that was attracted to a guy that focused so much about disliking other peoples relationship choices, then I would advise her to find someone else that has overcome those sorts of issues)

So all you can do is keep praying and live life as full as you you possibly can because it is a gift that God gave us and we shouldn’t put it to waste.

I have encountered you in other threads, and I must say…you are quite the deep thinker.👍 Really, I am going to possibly print this post. It’s quite a unique way of looking at this whole topic!🙂

" . . . live life as full as you possibly can . . . "

This is a loaded phrase. I lived a life absolutely full of excitement, achievement, notoriety, artistic expression and camaraderie. All for naught. Today I am broke, unable to live independently, alienated from many family members, reliant on “better living through chemistry” to rein me in from total mental chaos. Drugs work. They just don’t enhance life. They kill drive. They deaden the soul. And I have very few days when I even care that my best days are long behind me.

I appreciate good men from a very great distance. So I’m guessing I don’t really know how good they truly are. I enjoy friendships with men who have a lot in common with me, but every single one I have ever revealed myself to has been a stunningly profound disappointment. If the “good men” turn out to be boring and the “bad boys” wind up cutting too deep, that leaves no one. And nothing.

Sometimes some of us just have to settle for that.

BORING? :bigyikes:

For secular society?

If someone won’t drive fast, get drunk, make lewd jokes, make snide comments, treat women like objects, etc…, it doesn’t make them boring.

It makes them the complete opposite. :yup:

When a man has managed to free himself from the filth that society shovels onto people from birth, THEN, and only then, can his soul begin to truly radiate with the Spirit. Only then can he appreciate the majesty of scripture, and the beauty of creation. Only then can he gain wisdom, truly understand his spouse and children, and serve God’s ends, instead of his own.

The man who is enthralled by Beethoven, enchanted by Shakespeare, and en-captured by the memoirs of St Therese is not BORING. He is the very substance of what it is to be truly human.

If a woman cannot see that, well… its her loss, as far as I’m concerned. 🤷

GOOD is not just the absence of bad. It is a positive motion towards God and His Will. And, from what I can see, it is anything but boring. 👍
