Muslims often insist that they worship the same God as the Jews and the Christians.

But can we say we know a person when…we Don’t even know his name. Don’t even know his values/principles, and Don’t even know his likes & dislikes??? Of course not. Simple logic tells you that even if you claim and insist that you know the man, he will certainly turn around and boot you out of his house and say he does not know you. Right?

What is the Jewish God’s name? Exodus 3:15 God also said to Moses, "Say this to the Israelites: Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.

What are some of his values/principles?" Deuteronomy 24:4 her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again for she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

What does He like? • Hosea 11:1 The LORD’s Love for Israel ] When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.(note that the entire community in Egypt then saved in the Exodus through the crossing of the Red Sea were the descendants & relatives of Joseph who was a direct descendant of ISAAC…NOT Ishmael)

So, since we don’t know God’s only name (muslims call their deity allah/rahman), we don’t follow his instructions/values (muslims marry & remarry), and don’t like what He likes (islam hates jews especially the descendants of Isaac)….then what has God got to do with muslims?

…SERIOUSLY…NOTHING. GOD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MUSLIMS.

If you are a muslim, you should seriously ask yourself who you are really praying to, because based on the above simple logic it certainly isn’t God.

Even Muslims will not recognize Allah on the judgement day:

**Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0352: **
…When the Day of Resurrection comes a Mu’adhdhin (a proclaimer) would proclaim: Let every people follow what they used to worship. Then all who worshipped idols and stones besides Allah would fall into the Fire, till only the righteous and the vicious and some of the people of the Book who worshipped Allah are left. Then the Jews would be summoned, and it would be said to them: What did you worship? They will say: We worshipped 'Uzair, son of Allah. It would be said to them: You tell a lie; Allah had never had a spouse or a son. What do you want now? They would say: We feel thirsty, O our Lord! Quench our thirst. They would be directed (to a certain direction) and asked: Why don’t you go there to drink water? Then they would be pushed towards the Fire (and they would find to their great dismay that) it was but a mirage (and the raging flames of fire) would be consuming one another, and they would fall into the Fire. Then the Christians would be summoned and it would be said to them: What did you worship? They would say: We worshipped Jesus, son of Allah. It would be said to them: You tell a lie; Allah did not take for Himself either a spouse or a son. Then it would be said to them: What do you want? They would say: Thirsty we are, O our Lord! Quench our thirst. They would be directed (to a certain direction) and asked: Why don’t you go there to get water? But they would be pushed and gathered together towards the Hell, which was like a mirage to them, and the flames would consume one another. They would fall Into the Fire, till no one is left except he who worshipped Allah, be he pious or sinful. The Lord of the Universe, Glorified and Exalted, would come to them in a form recognisable to them and say; What are you looking for? Every people follow that which they worshipped. They would say: Our Lord, we kept ourselves separate from the people in the world, though we felt great need of them; we, however, did not associate ourselves with them. He would say: I am your Lord. They would say: We take refuge with Allah from thee and do not associate anything with Allah. They would repeat it twice or thrice, till some of them would be about to return. It would be said: Is there any sign between you and Him by which you will recognise Him? They would say: Yes. and the things would be laid bare. Those who used to prostrate themselves before God of their own accord would be permitted by God to prostrate themselves. But there would remain none who used to prostrate out of fear (of people) and ostentation but Allah would make his back as one piece, and whenever he would attempt to prostrate he would fall on his back. Then they would raise their heads and He would assume the Form in which they had seen Him the first time and would say: I am your Lord. They would say: Thou art our Lord….”

muslims are in a a degree of communion with the church by virtue of their faith in the one god and their teachings on morality. muslims know who god is to the degree that jews know who god is but not on the personal level christians know god who are able to call god father and to know jesus christ through the euchrist. Muslims are our brothers and sisters (even muslims admit this by calling jews and christians people of the book) not just in their faith in the one god but also as humans created by god in his image and finaly by being people of religous devotion which includes the practice of morality that is meant to make this world a better place to live. do all live up to the standerds of their faith, no but neither do jews or christians.

However, allah will accept the “sinful” only if the “sinful” worshipped allah alone.

I don’t understand what you find so objectionable about this. It’s well accepted within Christianity that ultimately we are saved by our faith, not our deeds, it’s hardly something unique to Islam.

But anyway to the topic of thread, the position of the Catholic Church is that like the Jews Muslims do know God, but that we don’t know him ‘fully’ because we don’t accept certain Christian doctrines about God’s nature. I find this to be reasonable (although as a Muslim obviously I don’t agree with it).

Depends on what you mean by “know” and “who God is.”

They know that God is the creator and is uncreated. They know that men are called to have a relationship with God. They know that God chose men to reveal Truths about himself and creation.

Other than that, their understanding of God is limited, incomplete, and flawed.

Muslims are not saved by faith alone. They are to do good deeds, to wage Jihad and to give zakat. Good in Islam means anything that advances Islam and bad is anything that inhibits Islam. But no one has told anyone how many good deeds a person has to do. And good as defined for most people are defined differently in Islam. As an example, it is ok to deceive people if it advances Islam.

When the Muslim reaches puberty his ‘book’ of records is opened up and the good deeds are written in that book for Judgement Day and in the Koran there is talk of predestination (Koran 4:49, 24:21, 57:22)

And faith alone in Islam isn’t enough, it does require good deeds (33:43, 41:30, 3:131, 2:177, 57:21, 4:13-14, 5:9, 7:42, 18:30)

Walid Shoebat explained it very well by using the image of scales. He said that no one is ever certain those scales are balanced day to day. And everyone will spend some time in hell unless they are a martyr in Islam and then their lives are not judged and they get to go straight to heaven.

And Allah will deliver the people who do enough good deeds from hell and leave the rest.

I should have added that Allah in his revelations to Mohammed is a fickle god. I wouldn’t trust it myself, especially a god who changes his mind all the time. He even told mohammed (I will just humor the Muslims in writing that first part of this sentence) he will break his oaths when he pleases. So, if I were a Muslim I would worry about being in hell an awful, long time. And because Mohammed said women go to hell more often, they should really worry.

Just a few posts earlier someone attacked Islam for teaching salvation is through faith, now you’re attacking Islam because it supposedly teaches salvation is through works? Perhaps Jakasaki is the person you should be taking issue with, as he’s the one who originally made that point.

But to take your post in isolation, you’re only telling half the story. In Islam we are not saved by our works, but through our faith. However, this doesn’t mean that we have a free licence to sin, if you don’t do good deeds then that probably means you don’t have much faith, as good deeds are a fruit of true fath. But ultimately it is our faith in God through which we are saved, not the good deeds themselves. The Hadith Jakasaki quoted is a fair illustration of this. Another example of this teaching can be found in these Ahadith:

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard God’s Messenger saying: ‘The good deeds of any person will not be enough make him enter Paradise.’ They (the Prophet’s companions) said, ‘Not even you, O God’s Messenger?’ He said, ‘Not even myself, unless God bestows His favour and mercy on me.’ (Sahih Bukhari 7:70:577)

Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying: There is none whose deeds alone would entitle him to get into Paradise. It was said to him: But, God’s Messenger, not even you? Thereupon he said: Not even I, but that my Lord wraps me in Mercy. (Sahih Muslim 39:6761)

Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying: None amongst you can get into Paradise by virtue of his deeds. They said: God’s Messenger, not even you? Thereupon he said: Not even I, but that God should wrap me in His Grace and Mercy. (Sahih Muslim 39:6764)

Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying: Observe moderation in deeds, and understand that none amongst you can attain salvation because of his deeds alone. They said: God’s Messenger, not even you? Thereupon he said: Not even I, but that God should wrap me in His Mercy and Grace. (Sahih Muslim 39:6765)

First of all, I was repling to Sam’s post when he posted the hadith.

That hadith was real long so I took the Christian part of it and re-quoted. In this hadith it said that Christians are going to hell fire. Here is part of the hadith from Sam.

**Then the Christians would be summoned and it would be said to them:

What did you worship?

They would say: We worshipped Jesus, son of Allah.

It would be said to them: You tell a lie; Allah did not take for Himself either a spouse or a son.

Then it would be said to them: What do you want?

They would say: Thirsty we are, O our Lord! Quench our thirst.

They would be directed (to a certain direction) and asked:

Why don’t you go there to get water?

But they would be pushed and gathered together towards the Hell, which was like a mirage to them, and the flames would consume one another.

They would fall Into the Fire, till no one is left except he who worshipped Allah, be he pious or sinful. **

The very last line states that the only ones who are left are the ones who worshipped allah whether they were “pious” or 'SINFUL".

So, my statement stands.

Do you really know Who God is? What presumption. If you did know you couldn’t tell us because He is indescribable, ineffable.

Muslims are monotheists who worship this transcendent One God, according to the Second Vatican Council, whose existence can be known without supernatural revelation according to the First Vatican Council. Arabian Christian Bibles translate God as Allah.

Actually, you are the one telling half the story. And yes, your Koran does indeed say Muslims have to do good works and faith is NOT good enough. You have to do BOTH. And part of that worship is the Muslim’s worship of Mohammed since he put himself up with Allah on Judgement Day. He will be there judging you just as Allah will be. (talk about shirk! which seems to be ok to most Muslims because no one is supposed to talk smack about Mohammed.) And I already outlined the Koran and noted that the word good is not as most people define it in Islam in my post at 9:57 today.

We can keep going back and forth, but you are just trying to pass off some bad scoop to people. It is called kithman (or spelled kitman) which is omitting some things.

Rory,

why are you telling us that Rory = President?

Can you say your name is Rory and insist that Rory = President? You cannot, because it simply shows to everyone that you’re desperately wanting to be president.

What is ‘allah’? According to the quran itself, the word ‘allah’ is one of 99 NAMES of muhammad’s deity. This is an accepted understanding amongst all islamic scholars especially those in the early ages.

What is the arabic word/noun for god? It is ILAH.

What then is allah?..well, alot of ignoramuses out there (including some christians) are thinking that just because the muslims have no other word to describe their deity, the name - ‘allah’ can be conveniently used synonymously with the word ‘god’. Well, big mistake.

For your information, the name - allah is a NAME. It is not a noun.

So, if anyone is to say ‘God’ is Great, then that person should say ILAHU- AKBAR. NOT allahu ak…

PS. I can call my pet goldfish ‘thehuman’, but that doesn’t make it HUMAN.

Similarly, calling a stone ‘thegod’ doesnt ever make it god. It remains just a stone. And you can say its greatest, by saying ‘thegod is the greatest’ ‘allahu akbar’…but what you are really doing is just deceiving yourself and others about how great that stone is.

Hi Mosacked,

Rory=President ???

I disagree with you if you say that Muslims are atheists. As a Catholic, I have problems with the Islamic religion. But I grant that they believe in God. You are welcome to your point of view, but if you want to advertise it at a Catholic internet site, you might need to expect others to “become president”. My position is not unique. The best thing I can say about your position is that it is in the minority, and clashes with that of the Catholic Church. We can avoid becoming Muslims without exaggerating their errors as you would seem to want.

The bible says that many will be deceived. Some will think they are doing things for God, when they really are not. What is the premise of your believe that they worship the same God? Just because they also believe that God is ONE and there is only ONE true God? Don’t even the demons know that God is ONE? Well for your information, many would love to tell you that they are the one and only president.

True, the appointment is ONE, but who is the true appointee? THAT must be addressed and is of paramount importance. Calling for yourself a wrong father can lead you to alot of trouble even in this world.

And I am not exaggerating errors here, I am merely pointing out the differences lest the ignorance of it leads to foolish affiliation.

You have not understood what the Bible says when it defined the Anti-Christ. The Anti-Christ denies the deity of Jesus, rejects the Father(God) and the Son(Jesus). Now, Islam fits that definition like a glove. If you think that your refusal to acknowledge their errors is done in good faith, think again. Cos you are clearly sitting on the wrong side of the fence.

Just as a side note, allahu akbar means ‘Allah is greater’. It was meant as a rub against the Jews and Christians.

Yes, because in Islam we believed we are saved by our faith in God, even if we are sinful. I was wondering why, as a Christian, you found this so objectionable, when it’s moreorless the same as what Christianity teaches. We only differ on what the true faith actually is.

Your understanding is wrong. The word *Allah *is not a name, it is an Arabic noun meaning ‘God’, etymologically related to the Hebrew *Elohim *and the Aramaic Alaha, and is used by all Arabic speakers to mean ‘God’. The word ‘ilah’ does not mean ‘God’, it can be most basically translated as ‘god’ (in case you’re not aware of this, in English ‘god’ and ‘God’ have different meanings), but the true meaning of the word is ‘an object of worship’. The phrase ‘ilahu akbar’ is actually meaningless in Arabic.

Kadaveri,

I am very sure that you must have shut your mind when I referred you to those sites for information. Or perhaps your mind just BLANKED OUT. Cos you replied without even realising that I have already answered you.

You speak in ignorance against even your own islamic academics.

Every islamic academic knows that allah is the personal NAME of islam’s deity.

How you wish to use that name to equate with the word - ‘god’ is your personal choice.

Just in case you are not aware, the Bible has prophesied so many things on Islam that it will shock you to realise that as a muslim you’re sitting right inside the house of Satan.

I didn’t blank it out, rather I didn’t see much point in responding to them as they are unscholarly and have too many mistakes to be worth bothering with. Also as someone who has studied under Islamic academics for some time, you’re not in a position to tell me what ‘every Islamic academic knows’.

There are two scholarly opinions on the immediate etymological origin of the word Allah. The first is that it is a conjunction of the phrase al-ilah; the second is that it’s a loan word from Aramaic-Syriac that has been Arabised, the original word being alaha. In my opinion, the second is by far the most likely; as there are serious problems with the first opinion of which I have never seen an adequate resolution, and seems to be little more than folk etymology. Firstly, the most important part of the word *ilah *is the il, which is the Proto-Semitic word for ‘God’. From this we also get the Akkadian ilu, Aramaic/Syriac alaha, the Hebrew El, *Eloh *and Elohim; it’s unlikely that if a word were to be formed from al-ilah the il would be the part of the word that is dropped. Also *Allah and ilah are not as similar as they appear to be when transliterated into basic Latin script. Firstly the l *in *Allah *is velarised (like the l in ‘loch’), but the l in ilah is a clear unvelarised l (like the l in ‘love’), this is especially important as there is no velarised l in Arabic phonology, implying that the source is from a language other than Arabic. Secondly, the second a in Allah is not the same as the a in ilah, the second a in Allah being like the vowel sound in ‘warm’, and the a in ilah being like the vowel sound in ‘cat’. Again, the vowel sound in Allah and ‘warm’ does not exist in Arabic, implying the word is of foreign origin. Indeed Allah is the only word in Arabic which has these two sounds.

The second opinion is more convincing because these two sounds do exist in Aramaic/Syriac; whatsmore the word for ‘God’ in Aramaic, alaha (the word Jesus Christ most likely used to refer to God, if you’re interested) is pronounced using these two sounds in exactly the same way as the Arabic Allah is. Also, the only real difference between the two words, that the Aramaic has an extra a at the end whereas Allah doesn’t, can be easily explained in that this extra a is grammatical and denotes the definite article, which would be superfluous in Arabic and is usually dropped when Aramaic/Syriac words are taken into Arabic.

But regardless of which etymology you deem to be the most likely, there is a broad consensus in scholarly opinion that Arabic word Allah ultimately originates from the Proto-Semitic il and means ‘God’. It is not the personal name of a god.
