We can agree that Muslims believe in One God. We can agree that the God they profess to worship is the God of Abraham.
So what? Just because someone else claims that they worship our God doesn’t make it so.

Exactly, that is the position of theism.
I find their logic strange.

Hong Xiuquan claimed to be Jesus Christ’s younger brother. He lead the Taiping Rebellion*. Based on his says so we must simply believe that he was worshipping the same God as Christians do and that his war (the world’s most bloody civil war) was simply a minor mistake in translation from a revelation of said same God.

Anyone and everyone who claims to worship God is. Imagine some nut picking up a stone and saying “This is the God of Abraham, let us all now gather bananas and wear them”. He too is worshipping our God!

*a name that always amused me as a child - with visions of enraged secretaries

Not true. and if it were, The Pope is one of those catholics.

Yes the practices, beliefs and fruits are diffrent, but that doesn’t change the fact they are TRYING to worship the God of Abraham.

Saying they don’t recognise the same god, takes away from the fact that mohammad was delibratly screwing with how things should be done. He was the real problem and he led them astray like a false Prophet… but they try to worship the same god as us.
perhaps the people are unaware of what they worship because they were led by a false prophet. perhaps this is what the pope means when he says we worship the same God. they “think” they are worshipping the same God. when in fact, they are not.
do you think the pope is gonna stir that hornets nest? look at the reaction from his speach. not all Catholics share his opinion on this matter. i just heard a priest (amongst others) that said that we absolutely do not worship the same God.
Muslims blaspheme the triune God and say Christians are going to hell. Muslims deny Christ as God.
Jesus said whoever doesn’t know me doesn’t know the Father.
you are right that Mohammad was a false prophet and behind every false religion is Satan and his demons. try as they may, their practices and beliefs are in vain and they need conversion to the one true faith in Jesus Christ through His church. St. Francis said their religion was from Satan. many Saints said the same thing and urged their conversion from their false religion.

We can agree that Muslims believe in One God. We can agree that the God they profess to worship is the God of Abraham.

They do not believe in the Trinity and believe that those who do worship Three Divine Persons in One God will burn in hell for eternity.

They reject the Fatherhood of God, seeing God/Allah as a master.

They reject the Teachings of Jesus, God made man. In this they can’t see the illogic that if Jesus was not God (as He claimed), he was either a con-man or a lunatic.

They reject the Holy Spirit, Who is Love and Wisdom.

Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, the God Catholics worship did not instruct Mohammed. If, therefore, he didn’t invent it all himself, it must have come from Satan.

Therefore, IMO, The ‘god’ the Muslims follow is Satan who has tricked then into believing he is the ‘One’ God.
So, are Jews worshipping a different God? Let us look once again–they reject the Holy Spirit. They do not recognize Jesus’ teachings. They reject the Trinity. Hhmm…it isn’t different at all from Muslims. Yet I know of no Christian who would come out and flat out say that the Jews are tricked by Satan. Funny how we discriminate against Muslims just because of what a few of them do or did.

The Catechism looks like it says so. But it’s kind of hard to swallow.

What do you think?
hola,

Nothing in the Catechism is “hard to swallow,” the Catechism condensed the words of Lumen Gentium:
  1. Finally, those who have not yet received the Gospel are related in various ways to the people of God.(18*) In the first place we must recall the people to whom the testament and the promises were given and from whom Christ was born according to the flesh.(125) On account of their fathers this people remains most dear to God, for God does not repent of the gifts He makes nor of the calls He issues.(126); But the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator. In the first place amongst these there are the Mohamedans, who, professing to hold the faith of Abraham, along with us adore the one and merciful God, who on the last day will judge mankind. Nor is God far distant from those who in shadows and images seek the unknown God, for it is He who gives to all men life and breath and all things,(127) and as Saviour wills that all men be saved.(128) Those also can attain to salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, yet sincerely seek God and moved by grace strive by their deeds to do His will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience.(19*) Nor does Divine Providence deny the helps necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God and with His grace strive to live a good life. Whatever good or truth is found amongst them is looked upon by the Church as a preparation for the Gospel.(20*) She knows that it is given by Him who enlightens all men so that they may finally have life. But often men, deceived by the Evil One, have become vain in their reasonings and have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, serving the creature rather than the Creator.(129) Or some there are who, living and dying in this world without God, are exposed to final despair. Wherefore to promote the glory of God and procure the salvation of all of these, and mindful of the command of the Lord, “Preach the Gospel to every creature”,(130) the Church fosters the missions with care and attention.
The Church, wisely, does not condemn the entire religion of Islam or Judaism because in doing so that is throwing out the good with the bad. Instead the Church gives Islam and Judaism credit for the elements of truth that each possesses (it specifically says which elements) and affirms the message that those elements are part of the path to Salvation, meanwhile the Church promises that God is guiding these people to full Salvation in the Church.

Please read this explanation. Also please remember our obligations with regard to Obsequium religiosum.

What the Jews know of God was revealed to them by God, before the coming of Jesus to complete Revelation. Therefore it does not follow that they were tricked by Satan.

With Islam it is different. The revelation they hold to concerning God came from Mohammed who alledged (as far as I know) that they were revealed to him by God.

Since God would not reveal something untrue about Himself, it follows that: a) either Mohammed deliberately made the whole thing up, or b) he was delusional and probably a madman, or c) he was deceived by Satan.

Take your pick

Yet Muslims are not?

Though we do not see the Prophet with the same regard as Muslims do, it does not in itself conclude that they worship a different God. What we see here, again, is that they view the nature of God differently.

Now, whether the Prophet was deceived by Satan or was under his own dillusion is another thing, and I cannot comment more about that. Regardless, it is another discussion, and does not detract from the fact that they worship the same God we do.

what about “D) all of the above, at various points in his life, with the exception of C which occured all the time”

Whether the Muslim God and the Christian God are historically the same is not really relevant.
By way of analogy:
  1. The Mayan religion was a very evil religion, practicing human sacrifice. I have no doubt that those who participated in the rituals of this religion are all doomed to hell. However, suppose a Mayan found in his heart the natural law placed there by the true God. Believing the Mayan gods to be the creators of the world and himself, and the ones who placed that Law within him, he could choose to reject the evil practices of that religion and follow his conscience, and do it to the honor of his Mayan gods. At this point, although he has never heard of the God of Abraham who created the world, his worship of his gods (who in fact are nothing but fictional entities anyway) has in a way transferred to the true God of Abraham.
  2. In contrast, a Christian who begins to engage in human sacrifice or other evil deeds in the name of the Christian God, no longer truly worships the God of Abraham, even though he may use His correct name in his worship.
This is also the case for Muslims, according to the Catechism. If they through no fault of their own have not been exposed to the light of Catholicism, yet live according to the universal law written on their conscience, then the God they worship, no matter the name they direct their prayers to, is the true God.
