Do Not Compromise Doctrine in Dialogue, Pope Says

Shouldn’t it simply be expected as a bare minimum that the Vicar of Christ would say not to forsake one’s Catholic identity? I don’t see why this is so exciting. If anything, it’s a sad commentary on the state of the Church that the pope has to remind people that one can’t compromise doctrine in order to appease other religions.

I see this as a reminder to those who might be a little over-zealous in the inter-faith dialogue called for in VII. I think this is just a case of a good bishop guiding his flock!
 
I was really on the edge of my seat when they were choosing the next pope after JPII.

Welcome to the Forum…I was also excited when they announced our Pope. He is a great man.

BTW…Brenda4God isn’t some election campaign is it? I hope not, because I like the God we have. 😃

That’s very funny! 🙂 I really needed that. Thank you. But yeah, I breathed a LOT easier after hearing who our new pope was.
 
It is not a case of not changing doctrine, it is a case that doctrine is insoluble. Like the Sacred Scriptures, they are the teaching magisterium of the Church. They cannot be changed or watered down. They are as they are.

Just as there is only ONE Church founded by Jesus Christ commissioned to ‘go and make disciples of all nations’ baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all I have commanded you’. Mat 28:19-20.

Many have listened, but for some, it was too much and they chose not to follow. So in the Lords day when He taught on the essence of the Mass ‘this is my body’ and some of His followers chose not to follow Him anymore. So it is today. The Church does not have to reconcile Protestants. Obviously it would like to, but just as God gives us free-will, so the Church recognises that people who hear her, also have the right to listen or walk away.

The Church will never water-down teachings to appease those who cannot [or will not] follow what she teaches.
