Exorcist to be guest speaker at event sponsored by St. Thomas More Society of Orange County
Fr. Gary Thomas, whose work as an exorcist was the basis for the movie “The Rite,” will be the featured speak at a special dinner next month sponsored by the St. Thomas More Society of Orange County.
The event – “Exorcism and the Catholic Church in the 21st Century" – is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, at 6 p.m. at the offices of Jilio, Ryan, Hunter & Olsen, 14661 Franklin Ave., Suite 150, in Tustin.
“Please join us to hear about Fr. Gary’s work on the film, and his view of the ministry of exorcism in the Church in the 21st century,” says a St. Thomas More Society email promoting the event. “Fr. Gary will discuss his training and ministry as an exorcist in the Diocese of San Jose, and the challenges of healing those who have been possessed by demonic spirits, and distinguishing from those who suffer from psychological illness.”
“Since 2006, Father Gary Thomas has served the Catholic Church as the Exorcist for the Diocese of San Jose,” according to the St. Thomas More Society. “He is the subject of a well-known book entitled The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist by Matt Baglio, which inspired a 2010 movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Colin O’Donoghue. Publishers Weekly had this to say about the book: ‘For anyone seeking a serious and very human examination of this fascinating subject, one that surpasses the sensational, this is absorbing and enlightening reading.’”
