Yes, the Liturgy of the Hours actually comes in four volumes these days.

Not only priests, many of us laymen pray the hours too. I use the one volume brieviary.

Me too! Some of the readings are really, really awesome - particularly The Lord descends into Hell - an Ancient Homily on Holy Saturday. It never fails to reduce me to tears.

Yes; some use the Liturgy of the Hours, whilst some even use the older Breviarum Romanum. Priests are obliged to say it.

Uncle Norbert,

Just because you haven’t seen one in years certainly does not mean your Priest isn’t praying the Liturgy of the Hours. As it has already been pointed out, every Priest is obliged to pray at least Morning and Evening prayers daily.

Although, it certainly would be nice to make it a community event every day. At the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler, Tx the Community prays Morning Prayer at 6:45 AM before Mass. At Blessed Sacrament Parish in Dallas, Tx, (this is a few years ago, they may not be blessed with the same Priest any longer, I do not know), the Priest Prays the Major Hours publicly, and all are welcome to attend.

Yes, a friend of mine (Opus Dei Priest) uses the Latin breviary.

They do this at my parish too–I agree, it’s a good thing 🙂

Actually the obligation extends to the entire cursus, under normal circumstances.

I thought that had been mitigated to oblige only the hinge hours. Not that I would actually KNOW that. Do you have a reference?

The only thing I have in writing is a response by the CDW to a dubium raised by the USCCB about the proper time for reciting the Hours and what the obligation is. However, I can’t seem to find it online right now.

CIC 276§3 says “priests and deacons aspiring to the presbyterate are obliged to carry out the liturgy of the hours daily according to the proper and approved liturgical books; permanent deacons, however, are to carry out the same to the extent defined by the conference of bishops”. …but I’m sure there is something more.

Maybe someone else can chime in with a reference? However, the other side of my brain says a reference is not required, considering the lives of all the Priests I know show that they are obliged to recite all the Hours.

Our new Parochial Vicar actually carries his with him wherever he goes. 👍
