Yes, priests are allowed to wear the Zucchetto. Priests wear black, Bishops wear purple, Cardinals wear Red, and the Pope wears white.

Where? On their heads, of course!

Are you sure priests wear the Zucchetto. I know they have a hat that they can wear outside of Mass, and does anybody have information on this “hat”?

The three cornered hat for outside wear is called the biretta . Like the zucchetto, it comes in different colors for priest, bishops, and cardinals. But it’s not very popular anymore among parish priests.

Note: it’s important to distinguish a biretta from a beretta , which is a handgun.

Then the next question would be, can a priest wear a Beretta? And if he does, should he also wear a Biretta or a Zuchetto?
😉

He would probably want to wear a full cassock with the biretta on his head and the beretta under the cassock. Wait a minute–is that a priest, or James Bond in disguise?

Gabriel Possenti was a 19th century Italian priest who packed some firepower…he’s the patron saint of handgunners…(actually, that website says he is but he has not been formally granted the designation by the Vatican…he’s got a great story though…expert marksman…)

If a biretta-wearing priest also wore a beretta, he might get a call from a fella named Barretta (well, maybe not anymore…)

Priests can wear a black zucchetto (or a black biretta) but most don’t anymore. They seem to have gone out of fashion with fedoras.

Fedoras out of fashion? Nobody bothered to tell me…darn…I guess I’ll have to get something else…

PS–From what I understand, Priests may wear the zuchetto, but not during Mass. Only Bishops and above may wear the zuchetto during the liturgy.

James Bond carried a Walther PPK in .32ACP. My pastor carries a Beretta Cougar 8040L in .40S&W under his cassock.

Oh, uh - apologies for the fedora comment…incidentally, I’m waiting for my “newsie” cap to come back into fashion.

somehow there’s something disturbing about that image. I dunno…priest, packin’ heat (two of 'em)…but of course, I’m sure he only carries them in case he gets a sudden urge to shoot up bottles at the range…

I think I’d go to someone else for confession. But hey, my mom always said I was overly cautious…

Why? Jesus, Himself, instructed His followers to protect themselves when He encouraged them to sell their outer garments in order to buy a sword (Luke 22:36-38; cf. 2 Corinthians 11:26-27 – a plain reading of the passage indicates that Jesus approved of self-defense). Here the “sword” (Greek: maxairan) is a dagger or short sword that belonged to the Jewish traveler’s equipment as protection against robbers and wild animals. Pretty much the equilavent of what a handgun is today.

Who said anything about two? Of course, if he did carry two (or three), I wouldn’t see that as a problem either.

He carries it in case he or his congregation is attacked as has already been the case in some churches. I think that is very prudent of him. He is taking very seriously his responsibility as a Catholic to protect himself and other innocent individuals from harm as we all are instructed to do in the CCC.

Why?

“… fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body …” Matthew 10:28.

I don’t know to what extent the biretta was precribed for outside wear. Perhaps it came to popular use because it was precribed for all liturgical ceremonies?

Anyway, the hat for outside wear is well…a hat 🙂 called the capello romano. There were certain rules governing it e.g. for bishops it was black had to be lined with green silk and have green tassles and cords, etc. while for cardinals they were red and gold and the hat was red or black. Priests of course were black. I believe that the hats were not abolished when the vesture was simplified and so may still be used. However, there were some changese.g. for cardinals the red had was abolished but black hat retained.

Bl. John XXIII. The bottom of the capello can be seen.

I know a msgr that still wears the purple cassock, the lace thing and his birretta. it isn’t a regular cassock, as the surplice or whatever kind of goes under the cassock, as if he is wearing something over that, in the purple or whatever colour you call it.

Someone here can elaborate that for me.

Our priest wears his biretta on processional to the altar at the beginning of Mass, but then he also wears a cassock… oh my he is instantly recognisable as a PRIEST!

We have THREE Msgrs at our parish and they all were the purple cassock. Our single priest really stands out next to them in his black cassock.
