These companies achieved their effect because we’re talking about them right here, aren’t we? Good advertising.

Could we have had this thread without mentioning them by name? I think so. But, we have a little creeping commercialism here, I think.

The mark-up on the pornography is probably pretty high, which is probably why these magazines get such prominent location.

There was an article in my newspaper today about that “list” we all keep in our heads of stores and restaurants we will not go to. You know, the kind where we saw something once or got bad service and we made up our minds never to go there again? Well, here you go. A couple more, easy-to-remember names that go on the list.

On the one hand, maybe these stores should put these in a discrete location. but, on the other hand, having them right out in the open kind of discourages people from loitering there – it’s kind of obvious. Maybe you wouldn’t want to be seen browsing through those “GAY AND LESBIAN” book shelves, even out of curiosity.

I don’t understand why “gays” warrant so much attention that they have to have entire categories devoted to them.

Very true. When have we ever seen a display for “heterosexuals” ???

When has anyone ever logged onto an online store and seen “heterosexual” as a category to browse through?

It’s so ridiculous.

These bookstores also sell the Bible, Catechism of the Catholic Church, biographies of popes, saints etc.😃

Let the companies know how you feel about the “good stuff” they sell and the “bad stuff” they sell. There are those rare instances where they actually listen to and take into consideration the voices of the consumers.:clapping:

A very good point, Karen Anne. Criticism goes down better with a measure of praise, and since there are still praisworthy things (few though they be) in these stores, we have a chance to make our points more effectively. I do try to speak up whenever possible. Whether they hear us or not, it’s important that we don’t stop speaking up.

I must be missing something. I live in the Twin Cities metro area and am in B&N and Borders with some frequency. I have never seen hard core pornographic magazines displayed. I have never seen hard core porn in Target either in books, magazines or videos.

Locally there is a chain that deals in pornography, but the pornographic sections are walled off and you have to pass through a doorway that is clearly marked for adults only. It is hard to believe an English speaking adult could just stumble in . In other words, porn is there seen only by those who make a conscious effort to access it.

what is the thing about Targer? i used to work at one and i’ve never seen any kind of porno whatsoever in there. have some started carrying it recently? i dont see how they could unless it was in a marked off area.

You think this is bad, here in sunny Arizona, the local B & N has put in a whole section for books on the Latter Day Saints!:bigyikes:

And at the local Fry’s Market Place which also sells books they have placed copies of the Book of Mormon right next to George Wiegels Biography of Pope John Paul II. It’s as if they think it’s okay to put these books on the same table! That’s it! I am not shopping there anymore! In fact, I’m not even going to eat anymore either! Afterall, most of our produce comes from Mexico where all the workers are barely 10 years old and live in horrible conditions. And from now on, I am going naked too! Don’t get me started on sweat shops!

I think AuntMartha was talking about Target online, not the actual Target store, but I’m not positive. We have a small Target here (not a Super Target), and I haven’t seen anything pornographic there.

whoops…i just realized i hit the “r” key instead of the “t” for Target…i wrote Targer, lol.

Yes, Target Online, but not for porn. It was the “Gay and Lesbian” category at Target and Blockbuster online that I was talking about.

Hmmm.

Jesus ate with sinners… The Church is a hospital… Hmmm…

You know, if I happen to be in a bookstore holding one of those good books, and see a woman without her clothes on another book cover, I might just think I’ll offer her the book I have as a cloak. Then whoever tries to get to her, must first at least make physical contact with a good book, which has the potential of saving their lives! 😉

Love covers a multitude of sins. Not all at once, but I might just go browse a book store so I can “clothe” one of these poor women who have nothing to wear. A little here, a little there…

This is the site for Vermont Teddy Bear!
When I found this out, I was shocked!
I called them about a teddy bear for my priest brother. They told me that ‘don’t have a priest bear.’ They offered me a bear with a black graduation gown instead.
But if you’ve seen the link above, I can understand WHY!

What makes me upset is that A LOT OF Radio station were advertising Vermont Teddy Bears and NOT KNOWING that these bears ARE in their catalogue. I know of CHRISTIAN announcers and radio stations who were advertising for Vermont Teddy bear Co.
Now if people KNEW that these bears were being sold, I believe these bears would be ‘exstinct’.
Get ready next month…it’s Gay Pride month, but you won’t hear Vermont Teddy Bear advertise THIS on the radio!

What do you do when you come across something on TV that you find offensive?? Change the channel… correct ? If you come across something offensive at one of the aforementioned book emporiums, go to a different part of the store. It’s that simple.

Edwin, there are plenty of us in VT who are thoroughly disgusted with VT. Teddy Bear. The woman in charge is apparently really “pushing the envelope” in order to make bucks. Don’t get me started on the “Crazy for You” bear offered this past Valentine’s Day, which came with straitjacket and “committal” papers. As the mother of a mentally disabled child, imagine how this “lovable” treatment of insanity went over with me. Heck, even the governor thought it “disgusting” and the woman, who, believe it or not, sat on the state’s biggest hospital’s Board of Trustees at the time, wound up having to resign her trusteeship and agreed not to produce the bear NEXT year–of course, it “sold out” for THIS year.

Vermont is really a wonderful place, and most of the people are wonderful too. Even the misguided are, for the most part, SINCERELY misguided. But our vaunted “tolerance”–and I mean tolerance in its old-fashioned sense of “you do your thing but don’t shove it down my throat and vice versa”–has been our downfall in the last 5 years as unscrupulous people with agendas have managed to trick a fair number of people into thinking that tolerance should EQUAL ACCEPTANCE; those of us who object are then labelled homophobes, bigots, etc. In fact, while we are called on in the spirit of “tolerance” to accept everything they want, they don’t even give us the older meaning of tolerance in letting us say, nay even THINK! what WE believe. IOW, these are absolute despots masquerading as loving proponents of simple “tolerance”.

Still, there are glimmers of hope. This woman did suffer “consequences” from her “over-the-top” strategy on the Crazy bear. And those people she offended are going to think twice about any other products she offers. Maybe the shrill in-your-face crowd will flock for a while to the outrageous and perverted offerings, but VT is also full of very creative people. In fact, you may have sparked a little creative idea for me, Edwin. So, VT Teddy bear has no “priest” or “nun” bears, eh? Oh yes, you have definitely given me an idea. Thanks! If it bears (ha-ha, no pun intended) fruit, I’ll let you know!

It’s not that simple. If people just “ignore” problems and don’t take a stand for what they believe in, no change for good will happen.

This is not the answer, Katie. If we turn our heads, we are doing a disservice to God and our society by allowing evil to abound. Jesus didn’t turn his head about the moneychangers in the temple, and I won’t turn mine about Playboy near the restrooms. * It’s that simple.*

I boycott Barnes & Noble because when Palm Beach county got hit by a CAT 3 hurricane last summer, a security guard outside the store told several of us who had spent the last three days in a Red Cross shelter that his orders from the store were to have the police arrest us for loitering if we did not leave (I was there 20 minutes before the store opened).

Yes, there were some street people in the shelter. But we all looked down and out after catching cat naps on a concrete floor. Even showed the guard cash and said all I wanted was to buy something to read in the shelter while I waited to find out if I still had a house standing. Nope. Move on…or else.
I am sorry you had to go through all that.

Personally I would have offerd shelter food and water to whom ever I could help.

OMG what a twit. Oh yeah, he was just doing his job. I wonder if those were standing orders, or did the store people sent him out there specifically to get rid of you?

In a case like that, I’d have been really tempted to let him call the police. By the time they got there, the store would have been open. I wonder what the police would have thought of the guard when they showed up – like they had nothing better to do about then – and found a guard had called them to come “handle” a situation where there were customers with cash trying to make a purchase!

In my younger days, I might have replied to this with vandalism to the store, or at the very minimum, “signing” their store with a P at night. Nowadays I am supposedly more Christian so I guess that would be out of the question?

Whew! Thanks for sharing this. It’s been days since I got really worked up over something, and it’s kind of fun. I think I’ll go into our local B&N and ask for the address of corporate and see if they will defend this sort of action. If they do, then I know several of those obnoxious people who forward every email that has a cause in it, and will be sure to start some stuff.

That is, unless I calm down before I get it done. The best weapon my enemies have is my own failure to strike while emotions are hot.

Alan
Down with security guards. You can be having a good time skating without vandalizing and here they come ready to poop your party. They make the stupidest excuses. You know, it’s funny, the number of people actually protected by “security guards” is waaaay overflowed by the number of people harassed by them.

Perhaps I didn’t state it clearly. I didn’t mean to imply to do nothing. Certainly express your displeasure and then go enjoy the many other fine books and magazines.
Truth be told, I find the underwear displays in stores more offensive. They are far more noticable. Not to mention being seen by more young children than magazines at a bookstore.
An alternative to placing magazines and books that some may find offensive might be to have an “adult” room or section that cannot be easily accessed by young children.
