I was searching for a Mother’s Day gift at Border’s bookstore this afternoon, and when I passed the magazine rack I saw an entire section of lewd magazines, including some pornography. I’ve seen this also at Barnes & Noble, and it makes me want to leave the store and never return.

Is it morally wrong to spend money in a bookstore that markets and sells pornography? Or anything like pornography?
This is very odd. I practically live at Barnes & Noble and I’ve never seen a pornographic magazine on their magazine racks. And the magazine aisle is where I spent most of my time. Ditto Borders.

Perhaps this is “optional” inventory, then. I saw Playboy, Penthouse, and a couple of others in plain view on the magazine rack next to the restroom. And I’ve seen Playboy at Barnes & Noble also. Maybe it’s just a Houston thing?

Yikes, that’s pretty discouraging for me. Since I’m in avid reader I always like browsing around Borders since they have the inventory. However if they are selling porno mags, that doesn’t seem right at all. I think these companies need to decide what they want to sell and ultimately what is sacred and profane. I would much prefer to see an “adult store” or section, that way you know what’s there. I’m not a fan of walking into a store and being suprised on what they sell, I guess I prefer some sort of indication.

I don’t buy magazines at B&N and have never noticed porn books or porn magazines (I do walk by the magazine rack). I think bringing it to someone’s attention does help. I noticed our local grocery store had a bunch of magazines that displayed half naked women right at the checkstand and RIGHT at the level of a little kid’s eyes. I pointed this out to the checker and asked to see the manager. He did look a bit surprised to see the location of the magazines and they have since been moved to the racks where there are covers that only leave the masthead and a bit of the cover showing. Not porn mind you, but magazines for young people, Cosmo, that kind of thing. Well maybe Cosmo IS porn…

I feel the same way about magazines at checkout. The other thing I tend to notice is how many times the word “SEX” is displayed in bold letters on their covers. Not something I want my kids reading!! I think managers need to be notified in these instances, as well. Especially when the half-naked photos are at eye level for children.

Don’t shop at Target. They carry condoms.

OK. That was a little harsh. However, if you just stop shopping there, they will never know why. Talk to the manager and let him/her know that you find it offensive. Chances are that others will or have done the same. If enough people do this, they will take the magazines off the shelf. It’s been done before.

God Bless,
Donna

I had a friend in college who compared an issue of Cosmo and an issue of Playboy–guess which had more naked women–the Cosmo! It’s not as overt as Playboy, but it’s there.
