Although I already named mine, I will do it again! I just love them and wonder if anyone else does or what they like. O Sacred Head Surrounded and Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. One obviously focuses on Jesus’ Crown of Thorns, and the other His incarnation. I love songs that bring these mysteries to the fore. That may be one reason why songs like Gather Us In leave me cold.

My favorite documents regarding liturgical music are De Musica Sacra (for its content) and Tra le sollecitudini (for its beautiful name) and Sing to the Lord (for its relevance).

What are yours?

Im so sorry, but I have no idea what you’re talking about! What are these documents and where can they be found?

I really like Tra le sollecitudini as well. Boy, do we need another one of those right now…

The best collection of links I have found is here: therealpresence.org/eucharst/link/e-doc.html

You can also search the Vatican site. It appears that currently, Church documents are organized according to the Pope who wrote them first, and then by type. For example, Benedict XVI’s encyclicals are here: vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/index_en.htm

And of course you can use the search function to turn up lots of documents in various languages.

I love both of these, especially O Sacred Head. Usually this one is sung during Lent or on Good Friday. We don’t hear it much during the rest of the year.

We sang both of these often as Protestant, BTW (evangelical Protestants), and I would say that O Sacred Head is probably one of the favorites of many evangelicals. I hope that does not render them inappropriate for Mass because of their Protestant popularity.

I don’t think it would, Cat. More important that there is nothing ideologically opposed to catholiscim within the hymn, and it’s very rare to find this. If we stopped singing hymns simply because they were popular with protestants - or penned by protestants - I think we would have very little to sing at Easter, Christmas and other high points of the liturgical year!

I love O Sacred Head too.

I must admit that most of my favourite hymns were penned by non-Catholics:
  • When I survey the wondrous Cross makes me well up every year on Good Friday
  • As with Gladness men of Old, and Hail to the Lord’s Appointed for Epiphany
  • Hail to the Lord who comes for Candlemas
  • Lenten hymns: Jesu Lover of my soul; I hrard the voice of Jesus Say; Rock of Ages cleft for me
  • Marian hymns: For Mary, Mother of our God, Sing we of the Blessed Mother, Tell Out my Soul
  • Easter: Love’s redeeming work is done; Come ye faithful raise the anthem, |Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour
  • Come Down O Love divine (written by an Anglican but based on an Italian poem)
  • In Our day of thanksgiving
  • Abide With me (perfect at a funeral mass)
  • Bread of Heaven on thee we feed (I always thought that was written by a Catholic but it wasn’t!)
  • All my hope on God is founded
  • Glorious things of thee are spoken
  • How Shall I sing that majesty?
  • How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
  • King of Glory, King of Peace
  • Lead us, heavenly Father lead us
  • Love Divine all loves excelling
  • Now thank we all our God
  • o God our help in ages past
  • Rejoice the Lord is King
  • Ye Holy Angels Bright
