Do we need the Bible?

If the Church is the “pillar and bulwark of truth” and knows the sacred traditions and commandments of God, then do we even really need the Bible?

Just curious,
JJ
The Bible is there, and it records God’s Word to us. But even if writing were never invented, we would still have the Church, and it would continue to do what it always has done: to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout the world.

Ok, I got it right then. Faith isn’t through hearing anymore in your view. Faith through hearing is a thing of the past.
Do you actually read others post to comprehend or are you just trying to see how many thousands of posts you can accumulate?

I clearly said in my post, that you quoted, that many people come to faith by hearing. So your statement above is incorrect. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ.

The Bible is a preacher and a human can be a preacher. However, by the power of the Holy Spirit we know the Bible to be an accurate preacher. Based on some of the homilies I have heard, that is not always the case. Or will you deny that some priests are of a modernist school of theology? While they may not agree with the RCC, nevertheless, they put it out there.

Priests are men and prone to the weaknesses of humanity. Some serve God well and others not quite as well while some may be outright deceivers from within… As in Martin Luther, a catholic monk… would you say martin Luther betrayed his faith through lack of trust in the Covenant of Christ with His Church? The Bible clearly warns us of those who will distort or deceive. Jesus Himself had the corrupt within His first established Church… a man who was recognized as one of the apostles and who had to be suceeded when he betrayed Jesus. Now, because of this corruption within the ranks of the teachers Christ personally selected, should man abandon Jesus as they do His Church?

g… I can clearly see your devotion to what you believe; there is no denying that of you. But for all that you say in claim to your reverence for the Inspired written Word of God in the Bible, you contrast this reverence and devotion in your own denial and avoidance of all the proofs, most especially scriptural proclamations along with the questions presented to you, If a person cannot credibly respond to those issues and give reason for their beliefs or opinions with credible support, it is due to denial of the truth in what the scriptures clearly tells us; what the Word of God clearly tells us.

Scripture does not conflict with itself. One can easily defeat oneself through irrational denial for the sake of pride. I was there once for a very long time. But if you honestly look at those questions and issues raised and seek the answers, you’ll find there is only one honest, scripturally supported answer that responds to them all. Then the final question will be for you to answer to yourself. Will you be able to accept the Truth when you realize it or will you continue to avoid the Truth in its fullness in scripture, the Inspired Word of God… Would it be easier to continue believing Scripture selectively and in part which in fact is not believing in the Inspired Word of God at all… it is a rude awakening for a person to find how he or she can love the Inspired Word of God so much as perhaps you do only to realize he/she has been living in opposition not only to His Word, but in opposition of the most critical covenant Jesus made being in the founding of His Church. The one Church He suffered His Passion, Death and resurrection to found and the one Church He established for the teaching of His Gospel so all MAY come to know Him, MAY accept and believe and have faith in Him… and “believe” includes trust.

Do we need the Bible?

Most certainly! Scripture is the Word of God (John 10:35). And Jesus Himself said: “It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (4:4).

IF the Bible is the Word of God AND man shall live by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth, THEN man must live by every word written in the Bible.

Now, IF man is to live by every word written in the Bible, THEN one cannot be a true Christian UNLESS he/she knows every word written in the Bible.

So, knowledge of the Bible is essential for a true Christian.

Jesus said: "The words I have spoken will be their judge on the last day!” (Jn 12:48). For this Jesus, “… he comes to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth” (Ps. 96:13).

God’s Word, the Holy Bible, is TRUTH (John 17:17). According to Jesus, the words there will judge us on the last day!

That’s why we are told that “these have been written [the words in the Bible] in order that you may believe… and that through your faith in him YOU MAY HAVE LIFE [may be saved]” (John 20:31).

Yes, the Scriptures would lead one to salvation: "And you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ” (2 Tim. 3:15).

Do we need the Bible?

Most certainly! Scripture is the Word of God (John 10:35). And Jesus Himself said: “It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (4:4).
This is very much in line with what Peter said when Jesus asked them if they would leave Him too.

John 6:66 And he said: Therefore did I say to you, that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father. 67 After this many of his disciples went back; and walked no more with him. 68 Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away? 69 And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

What "words of eternal life" was Peter refering to? The Bible??? Or maybe Peter meant the words that Jesus just finished saying:

56 For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. 57 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him. 58 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me. 59 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever.

Man shall not live by bread alone

Do you see the obvious parallel with “Man shall not live by bread alone” and “Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead”?

So what “words” did Jesus just finish saying before Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” ???

What words? A book that would take 350 years to be universally accepted as inspired? Obviously, Peter was refering to the words Jesus just spoke, the context of the Bread of Life discourse in John 6.

His words are:

56 For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. 57 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him. 58 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me. 59 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever.

Not “He that reads the Bible, shall live for ever.”
IF the Bible is the Word of God AND man shall live by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth, THEN man must live by every word written in the Bible.
but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God"
Amen, but that does not mean that ONLY Scripture proceeds from the mouth of God. I agree that the bible is very important, and God breathed, but the bible is NOT the only thing that is God breathed. God breathed into the nostrils of Adam and on the Apostles and to ignore that is to ignore the bible.

John 20:22 - the Lord “breathes” on the apostles, and then gives them the power to forgive and retain sins. The only other moment in Scripture where God breathes on man is in Gen. 2:7, when the Lord “breathes” divine life into man. When this happens, a significant transformation takes place.
Now, IF man is to live by every word written in the Bible, THEN one cannot be a true Christian UNLESS he/she knows every word written in the Bible.
That is an unjust imposition.
Thus, it is no exaggeration to say that the total literacy rate in the Land of Israel at that time (of Jews only, of course), was probably less than 3%.
faculty.biu.ac.il/~barilm/illitera.html
By the 19th century 90% of the world population could not read. Sorry, God is not so cruel as to make literacy a criteria for salvation.
So, knowledge of the Bible is essential for a true Christian.
What about children or the senile, or mentally challenged people who **can’t **know the bible?
Jesus said: "The words I have spoken will be their judge on the last day!” (Jn 12:48). For this Jesus, “… he comes to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth” (Ps. 96:13).

God’s Word, the Holy Bible, is TRUTH (John 17:17). According to Jesus, the words there will judge us on the last day!
John 17:17 does not restrict God’s word to the written word alone, you do. Nowhere in the Bible where you find “God’s word” is it restricted to the written word alone. It is not in the Bible. It is a 400 year old man made tradition. Key in the phrase “God’s word” or “word of God” in any bible search engine, and see it for yourself.

That’s why we are told that “these have been written [the words in the Bible] in order that you may believe… and that through your faith in him YOU MAY HAVE LIFE [may be saved]” (John 20:31).

“these have been written in order that you may believe…”

It doesn’t mean you must be a Bible reader in order to be a believer, it means we don’t have to literally see Jesus in full physical form in order to believe. (we see Jesus is the Bread come down from heaven, the Lamb of God, The Bread of Life…we hope you get to see Him someday)

*27 Then he saith to Thomas: Put in thy finger hither, and see my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and put it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing. 28 Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God. 29 Jesus saith to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and have believed. *30 Many other signs also did Jesus in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name.
Mailman;6420574:
Yes, the Scriptures would lead one to salvation: "And you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ” (2 Tim. 3:15).
Yes, the Scriptures would lead one to salvation.

*14 But continue thou in those things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: (TRADITION) knowing of whom thou hast learned them; (MAGISTERIUM) 15 And because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures, (SCRIPTURE) which can instruct thee to salvation, by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice, 17 That the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work. *

St. Paul is telling Timothy to follow the Traditions he received from Teaching Authority and take instructions from the scriptures in that light. The “man of God” is one who is ordained, or one who is called directly by God followed by signs and wonders. The “man of God” is not any individual bible reader. Search “man of God” in any bible search engine and see it for yourself.

My Christian brother, be aware the Bible was taken from its true environment and its contents to one degree or another are in every version no matter who believes what interpretation.

***1 Timothy CH3; 13 For they that have ministered well, shall purchase to themselves a good degree, and much confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 14 These things I write to thee, hoping that I shall come to thee shortly. 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, ***which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

***Note: not the Bible itself, but the Church Jesus instituted to proclaim the Gospel. The books of the Bible were not meant under any circumstances to be taken from the teaching Church Jesus established to “preach” His Word to all nations. The Bible in itself cannot preach. Did Jesus told us of many things that would come to be but never did He say anything like; “when my written word is introduced, you will have all that I offer you in my teachings”. ***

***What does it mean to “preach”? ***

***Theologically; “to preach is ***Public discourse on a religious subject by one having authority to do so.” Who was given this responsibility and authority by Christ? The Church Jesus founded and is High Priest above all; established by the Apostles and their successors with the instruction of Christ that the Church they established would continue until His return. Hence the need for Apostolic Succession.

Ephesians CH4; 1 “I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called, 2 With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity. 3 Careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 One body (the Church) and one Spirit (Holy Spirit); as you are called in one hope of your calling. 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

Jesus made a covenant with His Church, as a Groom commits to His Bride and like in return;

Mat. Ch16; 15-19 “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

***Matthew CH28; 19 Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: ***and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.

***John CH16; 12 ***I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you. 14 He shall glorify me; because he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it to you. 15 All things whatsoever the Father hath, are mine. Therefore I said, that he shall receive of mine, and shew it to you.

Matthew CH24; 10 And then shall many be scandalized: and shall betray one another: and shall hate one another. 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall seduce many. 12 And because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold. 13 But he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved.

continued from previous post;

Colossians CH1; 18 “And he is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he may hold the primacy: 19 Because in him, it hath well pleased the Father, that all fullness should dwell; 20 And through him to reconcile all things unto himself, making peace through the blood of his cross, both as to the things that are on earth, and the things that are in heaven.**

Acts CH1; 8 But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

John CH17; 17 Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. 19 And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth. 20 "I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.
If the written Word without proper authoritative teachings were all that man would need, ask yourself why He established a Church to continue until His return.

Knowing every written Word in the Bible but living by only a selection of choice is not living by the teachings of Christ.

As in Martin Luther, a catholic monk… would you say martin Luther betrayed his faith through lack of trust in the Covenant of Christ with His Church?

No. His faith was in Jesus, not the RCC. Our difference right now is the “glasses” we view with, our frame of reference. Biblically, I see His Church as the Body of Christ as believing people. At any point in history you have believing people on earth and of course in heaven. The saints, any believer, on earth and in heaven. Biblically, in the early centuries, communities of believers were arranged geographically, see Acts, the letters, and Revelation. Biblically, the apostles were centered in Jerusalem. In Acts 15, Peter speaks of his ministry but does not assume any pre-eminence. In Peter’s letters he speaks as an apostle and elder but not as THE apostle or elder. Jesus brought correction to the eastern, or allegorically all, churches through John in Revelation, not Peter in Rome.

As the centuries rolled on there were groups of western believers and eastern believers. One church, different seats of power. When corruption could not be shaken from the papacy, some bishops, and the Holy Roman Emporer; a split was forced by the RCC leadership. Martin Luther did not betray his faith because his faith was in Jesus and the covenant with His believing people. I do not see the church as a political, grouping of like minded people, institution but as believing people. The RCC is a political institution part of the Church of Jesus Christ. It held power until power broke it apart. Jesus the vine, branches of different groups of believers. For the sake of the many believers in the RCC, the branch was not destroyed and they righted the wrongs but too late to stop the split. Since His Church is believing people, the gates are still standing strong and have not been prevailed against.

Your posts have yet to confirm the necessity of hearing because they invariably affirm that the conduit of the Holy Spirit is something that cannot be heard but only be read.
The topic of this thread is “Do we need the Bible?” so of course that is my emphasis!

So, again you are wrong, the Holy Spirit works on the Word of God - spoken and read! Heard by the ears and heard by the eyes!

When you recieve teaching how do you distinguish the Holy Spirit from the human spirit or the evil spirit? I’ll say beforehand that using the Sacred Scriptures is admitting that the bible is self authenticating. And we know that it will authenticate the self because it’s the sharpest tool in the evil shed and the only tool in yours. If you haven’t matured in your dicipleship far eneough to realize that there are many voices that can inspire awe and wonder in your mind with the words of sacred text you can tout the Holy Spirit’s promises till your blue, it wouldn’t matter if you don’t know how to distinguish His voice from your own or the beautifull songs that the evil voice can sing.

I am a sola manualist. I don’t need a mechanic to repair my electronic ignition. I have a hammer and a screw driver. I don’t need anything else. The manual my mechanic uses is perfectly clear, and anyone can understand it. :doh2:

On a serious note, the ECF’s did not prophecy the printing press or a new class of people that created a market for Bibles. They put together a list of sacred books so the Universal Church would know what was a divine writing to be read in the churches.

Council of Carthage (A.D. 419)

Canon 24. (Greek xxvii.)
That nothing be read in church besides the Canonical Scripture
Item, that besides the Canonical Scriptures nothing be read in church under the name of divine Scripture.
But the Canonical Scriptures are as follows:
newadvent.org/fathers/3816.htm

The Synod of Hippo says the same thing 26 years earlier. Basically, we have a bible so the Church would now what was a divine writing and what wasn’t, TO BE READ ALOUD AT MASS, not for individual bible readers to confirm their opinions. The Church said we needed the Bible, but the Church doesn’t separate the Bible from Tradition or her Teaching Authority. Doing so denigrates the bible into an opinion manual.

If every Bible on the planet were to be destroyed, the truths taught in the bible are still contained in Sacred Tradition, which can never be destroyed.
Ok ? (!)🤷

Your opinion you “seeHis Church as the Body of Christ as believing people” is wishful but not accurate. At one time I also believed as you do. Believing what teachings do you think are the True teachings and what makes it acceptable while ignoring others and whose version within the Christian division are those to be believed? What Christian faith possesses the lineage of the teachings of scripture for 2000 years and coincides with all the attributes of Scripture? Satin believed in Jesus also and although I do not by any means consider other Christian faiths satanic, I am sure the division of Christ’s people is. That is scriptural. His covenant with His Church, His teachings and prophetic warnings are Biblical as I have shown you in the verses I quoted. Believing goes far beyond accepting His existence. Believing based on what is acceptable or understandable to some but not to others is not. God’s word is not flexible. If you “believe” in His word completely you would have scriptural justification as to why you or others can disregard His covenant with His Church. That, my brother, must be justified before justifying faiths with conflicting beliefs. You would also have scriptural justification for the schisms brought about by men who number many. It is you after all who wish everything to be in scripture or it not to be acceptable. You would also have justification for those verses as in defense as to why there are so many with different beliefs but who claim to be of one faith when faith in Jesus is not faith without trust In Him and His entire teachings, not just those acceptable to some while ignoring the rest. And if you feel you are not ignoring others, look back over these issues I posted to you referring to scripture and see how many you directly responded to. I am not attempting to put you down. I am praying you find the way to put aside your opinions to combine all scripture as unified in His teachings and see where your opinions do not coincide.

Although Martin Luther’s opposition to corruption by certain individuals in the Church at that time was justified, His abandonment of Christ’s Church and establishment of a faith departing from those teachings that had been handed down through the apostles and their successors to establish a faith based on his own beliefs and disbeliefs was anti-scriptural. Also, it should be noted that what Luther taught is not the same as what is taught by even his “faith” today either. Again, you would have scriptural references to support your opinions if they existed but there are none. He departed from within the Church Jesus established and unless you can show scriptural support as to how this was acceptable in the eyes of Christ, you selectively but not entirely believe in scripture. Scripture itself tells us we must accept all of God’s word or we accept none. So your defensiveness against the “RCC” because you wish to believe what you think you know about her teachings is wishful based on what you have been led to believe. Scripture also attests to One faith being in one teaching with the trust and beliefs of those teachings as we see in; Ephesians CH4; 1 “I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called, 2 With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity. 3 Careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 One body (the Church) and one Spirit (Holy Spirit); as you are called in one hope of your calling. 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

If all Christians were of one body (his Church) in one set of beliefs (one faith) in Christ’s teachings, we wouldn’t have thousands of denominations all believing they have the True understanding and fullness of His teachings while all possessing varied beliefs. Keep in mind His Church began with the Apostles not as teachers, but when they were no more than disciples themselves. They were the body of His Church, His faithful. Does your denomination possess apostolic succession? Go back to posts #114 and #115 which you had no credible justifiable response for or #127 and #128 regarding the covenant Jesus made with His Church that you only offered these responses to with no credibility or support for instance and justify with scripture.

Martin Luther did not betray his faith because his faith was in Jesus and the covenant with His believing people.
Let me point something out. You are referring here to information that is not in scripture at all, isn’t that true? Where did you come up with this from? Explain to me how you accept and refer to information from non-scriptural sources as legitimate but you refuse to accept the writings of the ECFs who carried on the teachings of Christ when there was no Bible to speak of and who themselves took part in the identification, compilation and presentation of the written Inspired Word of God you yourself refer to as the Bible. And you don’t see your own double standards here?

Now you are acknowledging apostolic succession through the bishoprics. Are you aware of that? Historically the “seats of power” you refer to where the bishoprics of which were not separated from the guidance of the Church of Rome. They were assigned to oversee teaching the faith as it was handed on within their own geographic regions and to deal with most issues in those regions, not all. This individual authority is no different than it is today other than the availability of phones and other forms of communication not available back then. In fact the east (if you refer to the EO) did not separate from the papacy until 1000 years later, roughly 500 years before Luther.

Martin Luther was a monk, not a Church leader or bishop. The teachings of the CC were not corrupt, some of the men were. His faith was in what he could understand and accept in the teachings of that one church while discarding what he could not accept, similar to what you are doing in this case. The covenant Jesus made was made with His Church through the apostles. That Church which He established through His apostles who He chose to carry on His teachings until His return through succession. Compare the lineage of the teachings you follow in comparison to the teachings of the Catholic Faith.
I do not see the church as a political, grouping of like minded people, institution but as believing people.
T**hen you oppose **1 Corinthians CH1; 9 God is faithful: by whom you are called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no schisms among you; but that you be perfect in the same mind, and in the same judgment.

And what you refer to as political I am not sure but if you are referring to the establishment of the Hierarchy that is also Biblical.
There is no Biblical justification for the splits or continued grow of protestant generated faiths, only the opposite. The gates belong to hell and you are right in that the Church has not been prevailed against. But your double standards (if you are honest with yourself you will see them) show how anti-Catholic Christians justify their own beliefs. Your statement that power broke it apart and your acceptance of branches of different groups of believers is a protestant justification for the “sifting like wheat” Luke CH22; 31* “And the Lord said: Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you all as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee (Jesus prays for Simon Peter) , that thy (Peter’s) faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren (which he did)*.”

The differences are in beliefs, not just believers. It is not Biblical and in fact anti Biblical because it is against what Jesus taught and asked of us in Faith. It is only Biblical in the relation to being sifted like wheat…

to be continued…

When you look at Scripture, you see the RCC as Christ’s Church. When I look at Scripture, I see all believing people as Christ’s Church. So you see, when I give credible proof, you reject it because you claim the same proof. To a RC the RCC is the same as Jesus, follow all the rules and you will go to heaven. To a non-RC believer, the Word of God is Jesus, follow the Word of God and you will have eternal life.
No my brother, when I look at scripture I look at all scripture, not just parts of it. I discard nothing of the word of God. I was against the CC for 25 years. Much of what I believed you now believe. My search for the truth in Christianity and those 25 years experience I accumulated in investigations and research gave me the experience and resources to perform the research that proved the lineage and truth in Catholicism to me when in fact I was hoping to find it elsewhere. You see, rather than accepting the word of the Catholic Church, scripture led me directly to the Catholic Church. Why do you think so many scholars originally of various faiths that became advanced in doctorates and professorships converted to Catholicism after finding the truth in their extended educations. This number far exceeds any other conversions. I was ashamed of what I learned of myself. I was against the CC because I was ignorant to what she truly was and is, the Truth, and fullness of Christ’s teachings. You gave no credible proof, you gave opinions and worked with double standards and I say that as one who did in the past myself. I gave you scriptural proof which is what you insisted was the only legitimate proof.
It is not a conflict in Scripture, it is not even private interpretation, it is point of reference. Viewpoint, RCC=Christ’s Church; other viewpoint, All Believers=Christ’s Church. Your bold pronouncements of my doom do not agree with the work of Christ in my life.
Where did I say you were doomed my brother?
Even the RCC catechism para 819 acknowledges salvation and sanctification outside of the RCC. We are both interpreting Scripture correctly, you are just limiting its scope. Why do you fight so hard to claim pre-eminence and equate that with salvation?
I provided you the answer to your quote of the CCC and both paragraphs before and after the one you quoted. And if you re-read my response in that post, you will see you misread something the first time around.

Peace my brother.

For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart - Hebrews 4:12

Peter said to them, Repent and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit - Acts2:38
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised form the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life - Romans 6:4
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we many know the things freely given to us by God - 1Corinthians 2:12
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for the saints accoding to the will of God. - Romans 8:26
There was the true Light which coming into the world enlightens every man - John 1:9
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name - John 1:12
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God - Romans 8:15, 16

Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand - Romans 14:4

Some of your words are judgemental because you do not know me. I have tried to briefly, not entirely, list the Scriptures to counter the above. I know this will not satisfy you because it seems you do not think the Scriptures I use apply to me. It appears to you that I am merely using them to authenticate myself. However, in the RCC catechism para 819 it does not agree with you, it says that outside of the visible confines of the RCC truth and sanctification and salvation can be found in the written Word of God among other non-RC believers. Of course there is more in the preceding and following paragraphs concerning the view that the RCC is pre-eminent but do not whitewash this very important point, there is life outside of the RCC if not unity.

The folly of the typical Evangelical distortion of sola Scriptura, wherein they make Scripture the only reliable source of all knowledge, period, is scarcely better revealed by such examples as this and the ever-popular retort to someone quoting a non-biblical source, “Why don’t you quote the Words of God instead of the words of mere men?” Um, yeah, maybe I’ll do that after you explain to me just how it is that you yourself when you talk about “what the Bible teaches” are not just one of those “mere men” against whom you issue your tirades, and why your unacknowledged creeds and catechisms and liturgies ought to be respected above the acknowledged ones of others.

Such people can’t handle finding out that just because something is “plain” to them, inside their own minds, does not mean it is necessarily “plain” to someone else. They can’t handle the suggestion that they ought to look up from their little sentimental devotional books and come out of their prayer closets and shut off the pietistic smarminess of much of Christian TV and radio preachers and take the trouble to learn some things about the world outside of the walls of their denomination and their own private hearts. They can’t responsibly handle having their cherished slogans about the Bible (and more importantly, about their own self-defined faithfulness to it) challenged, and all they can do is get angry . . .
This is from a Calvinist protestant. Now, we can also apply the same logic to Luther and Calvin as well, but the logic shows that this principal can be applied to all who privately exegate scripture to formulate their own creeds and catechisms.Scripture says that the Church is the Pillar and Bulwark of Truth and that a person is to be refered to the CHURCH in a dispute. Now, the plain meaning of the bible in Matt. 18 and 1 Tim. 3:15 states it greatly.

Are you saying that there are more RCC converted scholars than non-converted scholars? Isn’t it more likely that non-RC scholars outnumber converted non-RC scholars? Do you have a reference?
You gave no credible proof, you gave opinions and worked with double standards and I say that as one who did in the past myself. I gave you scriptural proof which is what you insisted was the only legitimate proof.
My opinions reflect my understanding of Scripture prayerfully studied. To go on and on would not do any good because we are using the same Scriptures from differing viewpoints. Also, I do find holes in your Scriptural proof, that is a misapplication of certain Scriptures. I am not trying to dissuade you but to show that there is a church, part of the Body of Christ along with the RCC.

Consider the following:
Without quoting in its entirety, from Galatians chapter 2, I come away with several main points: 1 - Jesus revealed the Gospel outside of the Jerusalem leaders of James, Cephas, and John; not leader but leaders; 2 - Cephas was caught in hypocrisy by his actions he was not straightforward about the truth of the Gospel; 3 - faith is not a set of rules but simply belief (faith) in Christ Jesus. The unity is in the Gospel. That is the one faith, one baptism (in the name of Jesus).

1Cor 3:21-23 “So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you, whether Paul, or Apollos or Cephas …
and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God” I use this to prayerfully balance the writings of the ECF’s.

There are so many things in the Catholic “faith” that it resembles works of the “law” to me. The only criteria from Galatians 2 outside of the Gospel was to remember the poor. The Gospel being Jesus, one with the Father, became man, was crucified, died, buried, risen, and sits at the Father’s right hand is our salvation because our sins have been wiped out by His precious Blood.

When you say I only give opinion, I try give opinion based on Scripture as the foundation as I prayerfully have studied. I have not stopped studying. That is how I came to this website. I continue in growing by the water of the Word.

I disagree with your statement that Scripture cannot preach. It is the preaching of the Apostles on what Jesus preached. It is living as Hebrews 4:12 says. When I have taken my eyes off of Jesus, it has been Scripture that refocuses me.
I provided you the answer to your quote of the CCC and both paragraphs before and after the one you quoted. And if you re-read my response in that post, you will see you misread something the first time around.
Not really, you whitewashed the main thought of 819, there is truth, sanctification, and salvation outside of the visible confines of the RCC. I am not saying that is the sum total of that section, but it is an important point. I understand that from the viewpoint of the RCC, it all stems from the RCC.

I think that is why we need the Bible. I hope I haven’t gotten too off thread here. Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut and peace to you as well

gtrenewed, if you list scriptures or the catechism without explaining ( I knew you well eneogh to mention it beforehand) how they apply to the question they are supposed to answer I’m left to my own to how your mind attaches concepts to them that explain the way you distinguish the Holy Spirit among the voices that whisper meanings in your mind. I knew that would happen because it’s been the pattern of conversation with you on this thread. You should respect the meaning that the author’s attached to the words you quote to support you view. Thinking you know better what the author’s of Sacred Scripture meant is excuseable but to think you know better what the author’s of the catechism mean is an insult to intellect. I pray that you at least open your mind to the possibility that what you have read from catholics on this thread is true. I pray that your mind opens to the possibility that the Catholic Church is the same Church the bible testifies too.
