Do we need to drink the blood at least once?

How hygienic is the chalice? Is it possible to catch some horrible disease?

To some degree, it is possible to transmit saliva- or mucus-borne diseases. The priest or EMHC will usually wipe and turn the cup to reduce risk, but it’s still possible. During this past flu season, most churches I attend stopped offering the cup for that reason.

The reason I would give for receiving only the Body and not the Blood is because it may seem as though the need to receive the Blood and Body sends the signal to the mind that receiving only one is not adequate enough and not enough graces are given through it. Of course, many may be conscious that that is incorrect, but the reason this question was asked is probably the product of this sort of thinking. Just my .02

I have heard the alcohol content can help and the ministers are trained to help mitigate risk, and many in the East believe it is impossible to get sick from the Eucharist.

I don’t recommend against it; you receive it when you receive the host. The whole Christ is contained therein.

I would recommend receiving from the chalice, because the chalice is consecrated, and only the priests hands should touch it, because they too are consecrated.

This thread is so long now, I said that days ago! We stopped by order of the Bishop two years ago during the high flu season. This year, it was up to each pastor. With explanation, Precious Blood was offered, but many did not partake. I stopped years ago and found that ever since, I hardly ever get a cold. Coincidence maybe, but not sure.

It has started up again around here now that the flu season is pretty much over.

I choose to receive from the cup when it is offered. In terms of any germ exposure, I see it as building up my own immunity. I hardly ever get a cold myself. I attribute that to my very frequent hand washing, but who knows.

Just be aware and careful. Washing your hands is one thing, but the ability to gargle with an antiseptic solution is nearly impossible after receiving from the cup after a few people with possible colds have just done so. The little swipe of the purificator clothe is not antiseptic enough for me! Solution: sit in front and be the first to drink!

True story: I noticed one woman who I knew scoop a handful of Holy Water from our quite large baptismal font in the back of the church and drink it! I was the only there at the time, and approached her and told her how unsanitary that was to do. She told me of her sore throat from a cold and that the Holy Water will help.
