How hygienic is the chalice? Is it possible to catch some horrible disease?
To some degree, it is possible to transmit saliva- or mucus-borne diseases. The priest or EMHC will usually wipe and turn the cup to reduce risk, but it’s still possible. During this past flu season, most churches I attend stopped offering the cup for that reason. How hygienic is the chalice? Is it possible to catch some horrible disease?
Why would you recommend against it?You do not need to receive the Precious Blood, and I would actually recommend against it.
This thread is so long now, I said that days ago! We stopped by order of the Bishop two years ago during the high flu season. This year, it was up to each pastor. With explanation, Precious Blood was offered, but many did not partake. I stopped years ago and found that ever since, I hardly ever get a cold. Coincidence maybe, but not sure.During this past flu season, most churches I attend stopped offering the cup for that reason.
Just be aware and careful. Washing your hands is one thing, but the ability to gargle with an antiseptic solution is nearly impossible after receiving from the cup after a few people with possible colds have just done so. The little swipe of the purificator clothe is not antiseptic enough for me! Solution: sit in front and be the first to drink!I choose to receive from the cup when it is offered. In terms of any germ exposure, I see it as building up my own immunity. I hardly ever get a cold myself. I attribute that to my very frequent hand washing, but who knows.
