Do we pay off pergatory time through our suffering on earth?

Might God withhold a normal need in one’s life to pay off time in purgatory if that person had this normal need sinfully abundant in earlier years? What if the sin was confessed?

The circumstances of life can be used to purge one of impurities and habitual sins.

The answer is yes. People can live Purgatory on earth. I know since I am living it.

Your question has a twinge of bad theology woven into it.

Purgatory is about the victory of salvation, not punishment for defeat.

The bodies of all in purgatory will be resurrected and joined with reunited with their souls at the final judgment, and have eternal life with God.

The fires of purgation and not for the same reason as the fires of damnation.

Purgation is the cleansing of the soul so it can reach the purity required to stand in the presence of the Lord, and is not a fire of punishing torment as those condemned will experience in Hell.

The fires of purgatory are like smelting furnaces to refine gold, not like incinerators to destroy refuse.

Rejoice in the Lord, always!
 
Depending on how we respond to our suffering in this life, it can make us holier and shorten our time in Purgatory or it can make us less holy and lengthen our time in Purgatory or it can have no impact on our holiness and no impact on our time in Purgatory.

The trick is to learn how to put our suffering to work for us and use it to help us become holier.
 
It helps much to surrender to the things we cannot change, and offer it up, without complaining, to our Lord Jesus Christ. Learning to do such things with love, like St. Therese of Lisieux, made her a saint.

Good spiritual books, the classics, can help us to understand better the road to closer union with Our Lord.

Our Blessed Mother is the best helper we can have!

If:
  1. you are in a state of grace
  2. it is done with Love of Jesus.
Bible: “One good deed covers a multitude of sins.”
Also has the condition of what is in the persons heart as they do the good deed, as Jesus said in the Bible, “Even the sinners loan things to each other to receive in return.”
If bad people can do good deeds and the good deeds remain empty, then God’s people need to do good deeds with great love. That is what Jesus told St Faustina makes deeds on earth of great worth to Him.

Jesus told St Faustina, “An act of perfect love is immeasurable.”

I remember reading somewhere of Jesus telling St. Gertrude the Great that for a penny one could pay for a thousand sins in this life, whereas in the next life, if you wait, it will cost you thousand dollars to pay off a pennys worth of sin in purgatory.
 
All suffering, properly used, is redemptive. One of the greatest tragedies is wasted suffering.

If someone is in a state of mortal sin, then their suffering cannot decrease their Purgatory or gain them more merit for Heaven.

If the person is in a repentant state of mortal sin, and has resolved to leave sin behind (but has still yet to confess) they can offer their sufferings as a prayer to God to help them convert. 🙂

I do indeed believe that God allows us to do some of our purgatory time while we are on this earth … I believe it is a reason for the suffering that happens in our lives … I do believe that suffering is used best to make up for time in purgatory when we actually give it to our Lord and suffer with patience, knowing that it is but our cross to bear on earth, and it is indeed a gift from God.
