Thank you to the administrator who just banned GISMYS.
The catechism, in sections 210 and 211 describes it as a “state” of being. It is not a place, but a purifying process, a refiner’s fire if you will, on the way to heaven. This is exactly as Saint Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 3.Short answer is YES, we will meet with Jesus before “Purgatory”
Jesus is our judge. IF we merit Heaven but are not yet PERFECT as our Father in Heaven is PERFECT, then we need to be made right.
Purgatory will accomplish this.
Is it a place? Is it a state? how can we know?
St. Paul tells us that this is going to happen to us. So I do believe this to be real as the Church teaches.

The answer is a definite yes. Nothing impure will enter heaven (Revelation 21:27). Yet, we all die with some level of sin on our souls - sin that is not unto death (1 John 5:16-17). Purgation is the only way that we will ever see heaven - unless we die in a state of perfection (yeah, right!I myself would like to see the answer.
The effects of sin stain our soul and they must be made white as snow. How can it be the case that we are unclean but forgiven of our sins?
Why would people be judged twice? that doesnt make any sense.Dear OP,
my understanding is yes, we will be judge immediately upon death to determine if we are worthy of Heaven or Hell. if Hell we go straight there, if Heaven but our soul is stained we must be cleansed in purgatory so that we enter spotless. nothing unclean can enter the temple of God - Heaven. then from what i understand there will be a final judgement in front of all mankind.
Well, mind you i am still in the process of conversion and learning the faith so someone with more apologetic knowledge can please correct me.Why would people be judged twice? that doesnt make any sense.
“Soul sleep” is Mormon and Seventh-Day Adventist belief. It results from the error of private interpretation of scripture. As to judgment, there are two types: our particular judgment when we die, and the general judgment of the world at the end of time. Why would people be judged twice? that doesnt make any sense.
I have heard the theory that when we die, we essentially go into a type of sleep, and then awake for the final judgement, I can not recall the exact details on this theory, its been awhile since I heard the guy talking about it, but he quoted a few bible verses that led him to believe this, Has anyone else heard of this theory, or know the details?
